What other functions besides mute would you want a toggle switch for? The volume rocker works great for mute. You hold it in a second and it mutes. If you didn't mean to mute you can than adjust the volume more slowly. I've found that turning off the orientation switching is something I do frequently. Much more frequently than muting. :)

Unlike the iphone the ipad for some could be left in one orientation all the time, its just nice to be able to give it to a client and not go all over the place. I can say this should have been done sooner.

Actually, holding the volume rocker button and the mute switch are not the same.
The rocker switch mutes everything, and you have to have the iPad unlocked for it to work (unless you are already playing music while it’s sleeping, of course). The new Notification mute switch only mutes system notifications and alerts. If you are watching a movie, just flip the switch and your movie sound won’t be interrupted with twitter updates, E-mail notifications, etc..

Just a double-tap and a swipe, and you’re at the rotation lock button. They are not removing the ability to lock the rotation, just moving it.

To use the new Mute Switch you don’t have to unlock the device to disable notifications alerts. And there is also no reason to use the rotation lock when you are not using the device.

And, it will work the same way as the iPhone.
