Only in audio!! Don't get too excited !!

No. "Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format" — so iPad will play avi files that contain Motion JPEG video (1280x720) and ulaw PCM audio. At least that's how I understand this.

Thinking some more...

I wonder if we'll see some kind of gesture in 4.0 for muting.

Like...4 figners all the way down the screen mutes it, go back up and your sound is back.

Something like that.

You'll just have to hug it gently and it will listen to all your commands. :)

WHAT?!?! People prefer buttons? Blasphemy. We at Apple make mice that lose buttons each generation. You can have your screen lock button for now...

That's a good point. Looks like they're out of buttons to take away. I'm guessing the next mouse will forgo the button altogether, and trigger a click when you slam your forehead into it.

could the switch not do both... changeable via Software > General Settings?

no see .. at Apple we don't believe in user choice .. for most of them it is better if we just tell the user what to do </sarcasm>

T.

PS: only sad part is .. for many user it may really be safer not to give them options.

is this NEW!! We can Now use .avi

TV and video

* Support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Component AV Cable; 576i and 480i with Apple Composite AV Cable
* H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

Good catch! I'm assuming this is so your iPad can download the video clips off of peoples digital camera's and play them back. Very cool...

That's not how I read it - you don't (not even sure if you can) create a valid avi file without a video track. Almost every digital camera out there records video into an avi file with either mjpeg or mpeg4 (on the new/nicer models) encoded video in them. This is for the camera connector kit.

The Mighty Mouse had FOUR programmable "buttons/clicks", the the Magic Mouse has two physical clicks in combination with multi-touch finger gestures. As well, there are free third party applications such as "Better Touch Tool" that allows the user to program finger gestures that recognize up to four finger gestures as the MacBook lineup.

...and yes, as someone else stated, sometimes it's better for users to have less choices, as PEBKAC is usually the number one reason for hardware/software "glitches". ;)

Bravo on the screen rotation lock!

For mute, which I've never wanted, one could have pressing both up and down volume at the same time. This would require a slightly more sophisticated hardware switch than a rocker switch but be very doable.

I have an iPod Touch, pre-volume control. There are only the home and "on" switches. I do have the concern that switches are historically a weak point in system design. They're mechanical and fail. We don't want too many and we do want them to be very robust. I had Palm and Handspring devices as well as digital cameras where switches failed.

if you have an iphone you would know what i mean.

I have an iphone and I didn't even know I had a mute button. I thought that was a button to turn my ringer off not mute the entire phone... but I guess it does. I don't know because it is always on.

Why not both?

Hmmm, so now the mute switch is a screen lock. That's fine, but why can't it do both? Tap to mute/unmute or hold for a second to lock/unlock the screen. You get the best of both worlds and it seems like it would be a minor programming change. Doesn't that make sense?

Oops, just realized it's a switch, not a button as everyone is calling it. Should be a button with visual feedback in the top menu(?) bar for current status, like on the Mac.

See my previous post regarding idiot users using the sim card to mute the iPad.

Yes yes yes yes YES!

Thank you Steve, the Number 1, pain in the rear, why does it do that, god that's annoying problem solved!

I've just been sold an iPad to replace my Touch - that was my biggest concern.

Multi-Touch Browser Has Aspect Lock Already

I need this for my iPod Touch! So many times I lie on my side and want the screen to stay vertical, but it goes horizontal anyway and it is annoying.
Multi-Touch Browser Has Aspect Lock Already. Only 99 cents. Can't live without it. This button is a huge necessity for the iPad. Very excited to see it happening. :)

I'm still disappointed in Apple's obvious neglect in their "Pro" lineup. The Apple Cinema Displays haven't been touched in over 7 years, with the exception of the 24" LEC LCD, which is marketed as a display for portable devices. I can not believe that Apple sells the 30" ACD for close to $2k as a formidable device. Now it's iPhones, iPad's and the occasional MacBook update. Sorry Apple, I love ya, but get back to what made you Apple, OS X and your "Pro" lineup.

To be fair, Apple was pretty much a non-player after 1993 until the iPod came out.

Um....

I know I could use that feature on my iPod Touch 1G. If only this could be in a software update (like a preference panel in Settings to lock the screen).

Not sure why Apple just made that change now......

So glad this had been done (giving the user the option to lock the screen)

But tell me one thing (and perhaps this may be a bit too obvious)

Why not (in the options) just have say a list of say 6 things you can set this button to?

Then different users can select different features THEY would fine most useful.

Too obvious?

Not at all. Sounds like a great idea. (I posted similar earlier in the thread.)

Just not in line with Steve "I know what's best for you" Jobs...
