What's crazy is being locked out of using a capability of your $500 to $800 computer because someone in Cupertino decides that's how it should function now. And they won't let you put that feature back in to suit yourself and only yourself.

Apple shouldn't sell iPads. They should lease them. Because you really don't own it. Apple does.

A little overdramatic, aren't we? I'm pretty sure I don't like this idea, but does any consumer have design control over a corporation? Of course not.

Lack of instant mute is one of the most destructive things that can be imagined by the human mind. I was clicking through web pages (Not on my iPad) the other day and I ran into a website that played classical music. When I clicked off the site, the music kept playing.

I was lucky in that I had a large hammer on my desk and I was able to smash my computer to stop the music (It was opera!!!). As it is, I will be facing this trauma for the rest of my life. Until they eliminate all classical music, we must have a fast and easy emergency kill switch to turn off the audio. One and a half seconds is way to long.

Funny, I listen to classical all day at work in the background. I was thinking we should just get rid of all other kinds of music.

Hopefully they won't listen to both of us. ;)

For those who are interested in sending feedback to Apple on this issue, here is a link to do so:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

As y'all know from my previous posts in this thread, my feedback was a request that the hardware button remain as a screen orientation lock -- mainly because I don't want to interrupt the flow of images as I move from one photo to another. (not all photos on the iPad are optimally oriented at all times.)

After writing my note to Apple, I came back to this thread & read another interesting reason for wanting the button to remain as orientation lock: it makes it much easier to use Google Maps (or other maps too, I presume!) -- especially when driving in the car, with minimal attention span available for navigating to a software screen-orientation button - !

It was probably a flash-based website that played that music, and thus couldn't be played on your iPad even if you wanted it to be

Horrible idea. So if i'm going to show someone a video or something, i've gotta switch out of the app, click on the unlock and then go back into it? That is really really stupid.

Hopefully it's a real screen lock still. On the iPhone it only allows you to do portrait orientation lock, but not landscape, why??? I'd prefer it stays how it is. I wish you could make the mute switch on the iPhone be a lock switch instead.

Hey, that's a great idea! Really, I like it!
(want to suggest it to Apple? Use the link in my post above if you like)

+1

The orientation lock makes a lot of sense for a tablet device such as this. At least make this a simple settings option where the user can change it to what they want.

I mean if all you need to do to mute it is hold down the volume switch, then this change has no excuse. Again though, make it an option under Settings and this could all be a very good thing.

double click the home button and tap the unlock/lock orientation icon. thats why they moved the mute to the switch.

In the past, I was agnostic about Flash. If Flash is the reason for evil websites that play classical music and can't be stopped, Flash must die!

End Flash and Classical music now!

thanks for that ;)

I know people on this forum are very hopeful and predict Apple will make decisions in line with what they want, but realistically what do those who know Apple's design philosophy well think will happen with this?

I really would like an option in Settings to choose whether to make it a screen orientation lock or a mute button. It doesn't sound Apple-like to give the user a choice like this though, as I can't think of a hardware button that Apple has ever allowed to be customizable.

Yah.... another good example.
Glad you "get it," too!

No you double click the home button and the multitask row slides up and you click the lock orientation button. you don't leave out of the app when you do that.

You don't have to go back that far. Double tapping the home button was customizable before multitasking.

Steve responds...

I sent the following email to Steve Jobs:
"I understand the reasoning for changing the function of the iPad hardware switch, but for I and apparently many others the existing behavior is a much better user experience. While it may not be possible to convince you to keep the current behavior, would you at least consider adding a configuration setting to allow the "legacy" behavior for people like me?"

His response:
"Just avoid using the switch in that way."

You may be right -- but I still hope not...
I think there have been rare instances when Apple responded to this sort of criticism -- & then taking credit for being sensitive to the needs of its customer base.......

I'm all for consistency but I use screen-lock on the iPad about a BILLION times a day... it really is a different device and consistency just for the sake of consistency would be a bad move.

I've never used mute and I think a major reason is I don't have a 3G iPad that travels around with me all day. I don't need to mute it like I would a phone. Maybe if I did have a "mobile iPad", I'd feel differently.

Screen orientation on the iPad is almost TOO sensitive. That's partially why I have to lock it all the time. The slightest change will send the screen spinning. I think I might prefer more of a delay or I guess just a more extreme angle to trigger the change.

Funnily the volume down->mute is the other thing on the iPad that I find too sensitive. The few times I've needed to adjust the volume down it almost immediately goes straight to mute. I've accepted this is okay though due to the lack of dedicated mute button.

Anyway, I'd much rather keep the screen lock as a slider.

Completely serious. I was shocked at how quickly he responded (and that he responded at all). Obviously I can't *prove* it, as even a screenshot of Gmail can be faked, but that really is the email I sent and the response I got. Also his email had a "Sent from my iPad" sig on the bottom.

Thanks for the clarification. I still don't like it, though -- I don't want something popping up onscreen to interfere with a sequence of images that I am trying to look at, without interruption by neat-o popups.

I hope he would not say something so nonsensical......
also too much like his much-criticized comment regarding the iPhone -- obviously.

Is there truly no way you can prove this came from him?

The only advantage I see to Orientation Lock is to astronauts and skydivers. I know the tilt sensor does have a tendency to go crazy in zero gravity. That is no excuse to get rid of a perfectly good mute button.

The best solution would be to use the sensor to turn on and off the lock. When the iPad senses it is in zero g, it automatically locks. If you happen to be doing a HALO jump and are getting a bit board on the way down, you can play Angry Birds without the screen flipping all over the place. I like the idea of drop to lock, drop to unlock. This will lead to more iPad sales.

Yes, holding the volume down button requires too much time.. /sarcasm off

While I agree, it does bring up a point I do hate about my iPad, holding the down volume too long automatically mutes. I would prefer it if you could adjust the switch behavior (I would keep it as a screen lock) and if you could turn off the quick mute behavior.

Well it was in response to my email to sjobs@apple.com so it at least came from his mailbox. It's very possible an underling is actually responding to these sort of emails. As for proving that I received the email and am not making it up, I'm open to any suggestions.
