I'm unclear if you are sorry that you wasted the time of at least a few interested people -- as well as your own time --
or if you are sorry you didn't think of something more clever?

I'm sorry that Steve Jobs has such a bad reputation that such a response was plausible.

I hope Jobs is reading this thread now, and learning something about himself. Hi, Steve. We're your friends. We kinda worry about you sometimes.

The software orientation lock on the iPhone is useless. It can only lock to portrait.

I feel this is a bad idea, the volume control already mutes after 1 sec.

In addition to what I wrote above..

On the iPhone the 'mute' switch is really used to switch from having the phone ring to having it vibrate when a call comes in.

At least, that's the only use I see for it and the only way I ever use it.

This doesn't apply on the iPad.

Please. App developers are not hardware developers and very few would support an unofficial 3rd party standard. Besides, who wants to carry a full size gamepad around when you could just have a little pad and two buttons built flat into the screen (especially on the iPad which has TONS of free room to put any number of extra controls to make life simpler).

All I know is that trying to play Pac-Man, maze jumpers (like a Mario type game) or pinball with touch screen controls just plain SUCKS. Your fingers are in the way of the actual game (seeing it) and lack precision and feedback. It's great for steering games and word puzzles, but after Apple saw how popular these things are to game on, they could/should have made the 2nd generation onward more gaming friendly. Then again, "gaming friendly" has never really been in Apple's vocabulary before so it shouldn't be surprising they wouldn't know how to make it easier for the consumer.

Some of the larger companies could most certainly contract out the development of a game pad for their apps at the very least. Why should every iPhone have more buttons on its face just to support gaming?

The best thing Apple could do is develop their own game pad accessory (for those who want it) and then license out the technology to other manufacturers, like they did with the inline remote. I know one thing though, I don't want an iPhone with a joystick or d-pad taking up space on the front when I don't need it.

Thanks Jony!

Another fail brought to you from..... take a guess!

Hey, Jony, would it kill you to add one more button to the iPad??? Or would that take away from the 'magic'.

Jony I've, we can not wait for you to be fired.

As with your previous posts, not clear if you mean to be taken seriously, so I think I will not spend any more time on them.

A little overdramatic, aren't we? I'm pretty sure I don't like this idea, but does any consumer have design control over a corporation? Of course not.

The problem is that Apple will not allow you to reprogram a device that you own. They make the decisions for you. It may be a minor design issue, but you have no power to decide. That is offensive to me.

The bolded part is the important part. I use the mute switch on my iphone for a lot more than setting the phone to vibrate (playing games at night, so as not to disturb anyone, turn off the typing sounds when I don't want them, silence the constant notifications I'm recieving from a friend spamming me with messages over msn, while I'm tying to talk to friends/family in real life, etc.).

The mute switch lets me silence my phone whenever I want without losing my volume settings.

Send this in the feedback

Dear Apple,
You have just released the iPad iOS 4.2 Beta 1 for the developers. I've read a bunch of articles stating that what now is the Lock/Unlock orientation hard switch is now a Mute switch.
I sincerely don't like this change since the Volume Rocker already does that by pressing the volume down button for a short period of time.
Second, the lock/unlock switch is REALLY helpful in a lot of times ... and I do not EVER usually use the mute function on the iPad.
Having to go 4 steps to lock/unlock screen orientation is absolutely absurd, when we can do it now in only one switch.
I honestly won't be upgrading to iOS 4.2 if this remains as it is... Yes, this is how big of a problem for me this is.
I know you listen to your customers, so I've seen most of the comments on those threads disliking the change. So, please, return it back as it is.

Sincerely.

I've asked Apple that question a dozen times before. Every time they make some awful change to the GUI I ask them why did you do it? Why not just make it an OPTION. The answer is that Steve wants total CONFORMITY among its user base. He literally cannot stand the thought of someone's Mac having a different looking or behaving interface than his own. You will conform. You will be assimilated! You don't need OPTIONS. Steve is perfection. Steve knows best for you what you need and what you only think you need! You don't need file access on your iPod Touch or iPhone or Ipad. You don't need a USB port on the iPad! You don't need a real gamepad control for certain games. Touch controls work BEST for EVERYTHING. So says Steve of Borg.

This is why I switched to Linux. I should control my own computer.

It'd better stay a lock button or no upgrade for me. I use the lock button daily, I can't stand the screen rotating every time I move around. Volume button as a mute is no big deal, leave it the way it is.

Great point -- which again makes me wish that this could be OPTIONAL -- both for those who want it, as well as those who don't want it!

I'm not happy. My daughter isn't happy - she said she wouldn't upgrade if they kept it this way. Did my feedback before i read here others were!

And everyone kept saying it should be mute to match the iPhone and Touch when it came out.... I'm still looking for the mute switch on my 3rd gen Touch. Did i get a defective model???

Ugh. Not happy.

And im not buying a new printer for printing either. Hoping for some mega advancement in that area....

And with this you have just shown you have no idea what Jony Ive does at Apple.

Bravo for spreading ignorant lies.

How about an option in settings to select whether the switch should control mute or rotation...

Exactly. They won't permit us to modify our own computers, but they can do it on a whim. This new attitude has turned me off Apple after 15+ years on the platform, since I was a kid.

To those who think it's petty to complain about the function of a little switch, it's not about the switch. It's the principle. I own the machine. I should control what it does, and how and why.

Funny how Apple is selling iPads like hotcakes despite alienating the hobbyist crowd. I guess :apple: figures hobbyists can always go to a Dell Streak or whatever...

This is Apple trying to be consistant across all their iOS devices. I don't use the orientation lock that often so this is fine with me, and I like to be able to mute my iPad also. Sounds good to me.

Consistency of user experience is more important to :apple: then appealing to the 2% of hobbyist market that wants to customize everything.

Agreed -- I especially like your point that the other iOS devices don't have the physical buttons in the first place!

Yeah.... UGH is the perfect word for this. (and actually I do think it might be of some interest to Apple -- if they were made aware that some users feel strongly enough about this issue that they might choose to NOT UPGRADE to iOS 4.2 because of it -! So I think you could express that further item in an additional feedback to Apple, if you agree.)

Hmmm....

...Interesting how they took both photos weeks apart but on the same hour/minute!

i think apple is right this time.
Mute is always more urgency than orientation lock.
While you in place like classes , meeting or whatever
you will feel the mute button like save your life .
+1

I get the impression that people who demand the opposite do not take their iPad out much or they do not use it for multiple purposes. Sometimes I might want to watch some videos or play games with the sound on or get an alert for a meeting coming up but if I am somewhere quiet, I want to be able to quickly mute it.

For orientation, that is something that you will only do at the beginning of a session and you do not have to leave the app to bring up the bar in 4.x. I only hope that the software lock will lock in either portrait or landscape on the iPad.

People saying this is to make it consistent with the iPhone don,t get it. The ipad is already different to the iPhone, as it is FULLY designed to be used in multiple orientations, which is unlike the iPhone. The iPhone does not rotate to landscape when in the home screen, for example. Another is in most apps, the iphone will not flip to an upside down position while the iPad does.

The ipad is a more freeform device than the iphone is, so apple correctly made the decision to make the switch an orientation lock.

Making the iPad MORE like the iPhone is not the right way to go - they should be diverging the devices.

Well this is part of Apple's tunnel vision of making everything into an iPhone. Remember which product is King in Cupertino right now - the IP4. Those guys have the leverage, not the iPad group.

Not relevant

I think is ridiculous that people complain about this things.... Come on! is it a relevant decision? does it change or ruin the experience? Is there a steep learning curve on how to lock the screen via software?

I could care less about this change. I own an iPad, an iPhone4 and a 3G, for those who might be interested in questioning whether I have had one of this things in my hands...

There are more important things in life than a stupid button. LOL to those who say that this would hold them from upgrading the OS!!!!

Get a life.
