Like converting a mirror into a window. The Apple appears to be backed with some "silvering." Take it off and the backlight for the LCD screen shines through nice and bright when the screen is on. No extra hardware needed.

except the LCD and the back have lots of hardware (circuit board, battery) in between them

And the article explicitly states that the glass is not modified on the back and has no visible alterations as a consequence.

I've seen what happens when there is a light path in between the apple logo and the screen. I remember seeing an illuminated spot on my macbook screen when using the computer in strong sunlight hitting it on the lid.

Thoughts:
1. If they added an additional light to the back, they're wasting battery life.
2. If they altered the internal rear-reflective divider so main back-light provides the light for the logo, then they're reducing the screen's brightness from the front. (Meaning if the user wants to use the phone at regular brightness levels, they'll have to crank up the back-light.... and again drain the battery.)
... now if it were naively done as an alternative notification option (instead of vibrate, or activiating the entire LCD for on-screen sleep notifications) then it could save battery life and actually be worth it.

But their implementation...
No thanks. I'm not so pathetic that I'd need to use my hardware to draw attention to myself while I'm using it.

If it wasn't such a nightmare to remove, I'd probably try cutting the back of my 3GS and doing something like this.

It's a cosmetic mod. It's not for functionality. One would expect to sacrifice something for a cosmetic alteration.

If your iPhone is face down, it will come on for notifications, since it's tied to the screen :)

Yet in the same sentence you prove you without a doubt are exactly at least that pathetic by posting a link that downloads such a ridiculous picture. I honestly can't think of a better example of how to be more pathetic in your attempts to draw attention to yourself.

Very true,
But it would still activate the main back-light, so wouldn't save much for battery life. If it were an alternate LED that only lit up when in sleep mode (instead of turning on the main back-light), then it would sip at the battery (the main back-light is a bit of a power-hog, relatively speaking).

Could be REALLY cool if done right too, such as if Apple removed the logo on the back but only had the logo appear with a notification (similar to the power-led on Macbooks).
It would actually be taking the minimalist style Apple adopted a step further by removing the logo. :D

Wow, defensive much?
I never thought someone would take that so personally that they'd reply to it as if it were a directed attack. X'-D
And really if you can't think of a better example, then that's just admitting to your own mental deficiency. (Which by stating it in a direct reply, is ironically, one good example you failed to imagine.)

But let me get this straight...so you're saying that in your mind a link (as opposed to using the image embed feature provided) is calling attention to ones-self as much as basicly putting a freak'in SPOTLIGHT on the back of your phone?
Talk about being pathetic. You need to get back in touch with reality.

I don't think it would be good to rely on such a scheme for notifications, as the current iphone lying flat on its back would obscure the light, whereas lying it on its face prevents it from being readily usable.

I think an embedded LED on the front panel is the best way to go, just as you see on android and RIM devices.

Very good point!
But the problem of notifications being obscured from covering occurs on the front too, and for current iPhones with their on-screen notifications.
You do bring to light a better option though... it could be put on both the front and back, and then tied into proximity sensor (gyroscope and/or compass) to determine which side is down, then only activate the notification on the appropriate (unobstructed) side.

That's very possible. Phone makers like HTC do things like this. For instance, some HTC phones will modify their volume level if they detect they've been flipped to their face or they are inside a pocket, purse etc.

Very nice, should be standard!:)

Make it retro rainbow and you've got yourself a sale, iPatch guys.

No problem, we can probably have that done for you

----------

Ya it is! :) I always thought Apple should do this but I didn't know how they would since the components are between the back and the display. I wonder how these guys do it. They must have to add an LED or something.

My thought as well.

Currently a very well kept secret but I will say, it is far far far from easy

----------

Make it only turn on when your screen is lit....

Make it flash when the phone is ringing...

Make it built into the iPhone 5!

I want it... but not at $200

It only comes on when your front screen illuminates and it will light up when you receive a call/text/alarm notification etc

----------

Tie it to notifications and you got yourself a winner.

As it is, it is just a light that is always on.

It only comes on when the front screen illuminates, therefore is off in standby and does light up when you get notifications etc

----------

It does use additional but very low power lighting. It has had no noticable drain on the battery using it daily as normal and has no effect on the front LCD

----------

Wonder if they'll offer it in kit form?

Eventually yes to trained global repairers under a franchise scheme. To try and replicate this mod yourself makes replacing screens look like childs play!

Full press release is now on the website if you want to have a read of the commonly asked questions ;)

It's too late for me to want to do this if I had the money to spend. This would be great on the iPhone 5, though. I'd like for it to be on when the device is on like the MacBooks, but also, I'd like to see it pulse when there is a notification.

That would take care of the phone if it is face down. There also needs to be a light on the front somewhere, somehow.

btw...completely off topic, but have any of you looked at iPhone 5 concept videos on youtube. This one blew me away...

I made this mock up a while a go for another thread about an LED notification light.
