iPhone 11 iPhone 11 upgrade for 11 year old daughter

Can you expand on what you mean by “struggle”? iPhone 11 should be fine. I don’t think video calls and WhatsApp would drain and heat it any more than when my son uses his 11 to play Roblox or Brawl Stars (or whatever it’s called) for extended periods.

Could she be experiencing spotty reception (cell or wifi)?
Roblox is a big one!

I’d go with 14 pro best color deep purple, beautiful and power house. Should be good for her for minimum 3y. Don’t listen to anyone else trying to raise others ppl kids.
It’s tech  forum not parenting one. 11 yrs is big enough to well know how to use recent  tech

I bought an iPhone SE 2022 model for my then 11 year old kid. I wanted her to take care of it for few years before giving anything. I do live in area with excellent 5G. My older teen loves her iPhone 13 mini.

So trying to raise others kids is ok as long as they have “right” opinion?

Even adults don’t know how to use their devices. We have social issues from people spending their lives in these devices. So no 11 years old does not know and as she gets to teenager years it will only become worse if there’s no boundaries.

Ok, what are the actual symptoms? Saying the phone “struggles” is kind of vague.

I see from the responses many have assumed there is a battery issue, and maybe it is. I just find it difficult to make that leap without looking at specific symptoms. A device that “struggles” while using apps that require connectivity could mean any number of things.

Will look at some quotes to get the battery replaced,

Roblox lagging, whatsapp audio clips not playing, black screen on some video calls in whatsapp mostly

I do agree social media has a lot to answer for.... that's as much as I want to say on this subject as it will derail the thread,

It was on my mind to treat my daughter to this exact model.

Roblox sometimes lags due to server-side issues, but the quality of the connection at your end also affects it. The whatsapp symptoms could also be signal issues.

My son’s 11PM says battery capacity is 78% and the status reads “Service”. He plays games (Roblox, Brawl Stars) for long periods (sometimes 1-1.5 hours) and he only stops because I make him put it down, not because of any issues.

Just pointing out that *IF* you have connectivity issues, replacing the battery will not fix it.

We've got a rock solid wifi connection and a strong 4g/5g signal, thanks for the advice too.

My daughter is 10 and we just had the big teacher meet with year 6 who were massively against iPhones for kids that age.

My daughter is on an iPad which I know is similar but it can be used more for homework than I phone..

Why don’t you move to iPad? She can still FaceTime you then at least and hopefully maybe keeps her off phone calls and social media for a bit longer.. I know you can get social media on iPad but not as many apps for it and you can always blag them they aren’t available on the iPad..

Having any iPhone charge during a video call will heat it up, so the battery will suffer.
@daleski75: That may be the main issue. Explaining to her that it’s bad for the phone to charge and heavily use it at the same time might also have the side effect of decreasing her screen time. Or as others have noted, a larger device like a tablet may be more suitable for use at home.

So it looks like the opinion is that her iPhone 11 should still be absolutely fine for video calls, game etc.
I have the base 11, and use it regularly for video calls. FaceTime, WhatsApp and even (when I have to) Teams all work fine.

No idea about mobile games, as I don't play them.

I'm running the latest 18.1 beta.

My battery (after owning the phone for 5 years) is 77% and Apple is trying to tell me it's "Significantly Degraded". Well, they can say what they like - it still usually lasts the day, although after two or more long calls (over an hour each) I'll charge it mid-day.

I'm caseless.

I have same apps on iPhone and iPad for my kids. Both have same screen limits and parental controls. I had to get a phone because the school bus schedule was erratic and she can text if it’s delayed or need to be picked up. iPad can’t do that, unless you have cellular. And it helps when kids play sports and need phone.

My base 11 bought on release 5 years ago have 78% battery health, original battery, and also lasts me whole day on ios 18, seems like base 11 hade a very good battery

I have an old XR and it's a bit slow on iOS 18, but definitely useable. 87% battery life (I think I changed the battery within a recall at some point).
An 11 should be fine. I think the battery is seriously degrading the performance.
Another thing you may check is the storage. You should always have about 20% free storage if you want things to be smooth. The bare bare minimum is 10%. Below that you will experience a bunch of problems.

The 11 has a CPU which is 50% faster than my XR and a GPU which is 60% faster... What ?
That was a massive upgrade at the time. It really really shouldn't struggle.

Why would having a battery at 84% cause lags?
The iPhone 12 is weird and seems to be able to start throttling somewhere between 80% and 90%. I definitely notice it and other 12 users reported getting the battery changed restored full speed. Getting Apple to replace a battery over 80% is not an easy task so I'm stuck with it for now. The 12 was always known to have poor battery life.

I figure an 11 with 78% could experience the same.
