I’m very disappointed with my iPhone 12 Pro Max purchase!

I was very happy with my XS Max and only decided to upgrade due to the 5G capabilities of the iPhone 12 and it turns out that it was a big mistake.

First of all, the phone does not support 5G while dual sim is active which for me is a must as I have both my private and work numbers active at all times.

Secondly, even when I disable one of the sim cards for the phone to switch on the 5G, the speed I’m getting is lower than the speed I get on 4G!!!

I even compared the speed I’m getting on 5G to my wife’s Galaxy S20 and her phone is twice as fast as mine on the same network!

Please chime in if anyone else is having the same experience as me.

Apple will be adding dual SIM 5G support later this year in a coming iOS update.

As for your 5G speeds, if you go to Settings - Cellular - Cellular Data Options, what is your setting for Voice & Data? If you want to force 5G, you have to select 5G On. The network indicator at the top of your phone might say 5G but iOS 14 now displays the best network type available, not necessarily the network type you are actually using. If you want to explicitly choose 5G, you must select 5G. Try running speed tests with 5G On, and then with LTE, and see how they compare.

I’m 100% satisfied with my 12 Pro Max. 5G in my area is spotty. I didn’t purchase it for the 5G capabilities, i think we wont truly see 5G nationwide for a few years. I purchased the phone for the size, the camera, and the battery life. So far the battery life for me is great, but I also understand and respect that everyone’s experience is going to be different based on your purchasing needs and expectations. For me it’s perfect.

literally every review for all 4 of the new phones said "do not upgrade just for 5G."

Good to know that at least the Dual Sim issue is known and will be addressed later!

Mine was on 5G auto so I did what you said and set it on 5G On and still the same.
I’m getting 180 Mbps with 5G on and 250 Mbps with 4G!
Do you think that my phone might be faulty?!

You probably have legendary 4G speeds in your area. Hardly an issue. 180 Mbps is a dream come true.

Upgrading for a sole feature that you didn’t educate yourself about ahead of time is a recipe for disappointment which is of your own doing, not Apple.
Whats up with all the attacks???
Where exactly do see in my post that I’m blaming Apple????
I just simply said that I’m disappointed in my purchase!!!
And I watched the Apple event for the iPhone 12 and the main selling point of this phone was its 5G capabilities and its camera, as for the camera, they were spot on and its amazing however the 5G is not as was advertised IN MY OPINION!

I didn’t attack you. I have no reason to. I merely commented on your post. You blamed Apple by extension without mentioning the name.

I have made bad decisions in my life. And most of them were because I didn’t take the time to inform myself as I should have ahead fo time. And from what I can see, you try to place the blame on the device instead of on your own shoulders.

I understand op frustration.

i hope apple will be able to resolve all the issues with future updates

Never end a sentence with a preposition.

Again every review for these phones said “don’t upgrade just for 5G. It’s great that they have it...they’re future proofed...but don’t expect much right now.”

If you have a problem with 5G, blame your carrier, not Apple! I love my 12 Pro Max! I think it's a great phone!

The only thing that I am really disappointed in are the following:

1. Lightning feels so damn old and why are we still using it?
2. Squared looks nice but its not ergonomically correct. I can't think of one thing that I hold in a day that is square.

As mentioned in my original post, I did compare the speed with my wife’s phone who is also on the same network as me and she is getting double the speed on 5G!

Dude you’re getting 180 MbpS. If you’re so unhappy, return your iPhone and buy a Samsung.

You can consider returning and buying another iPhone if you feel yours is faulty. I doubt it would make a difference. And even if it does, it won’t make any material difference.

If I wanted a Samsung I would've bought a Samsung!
Are you on Apple’s payroll?
Can we have some intelligent conversation on this forum without being attacked?
Being lucky having 180 Mbps has nothing to do with the fact that I paid my hard earned cash to buy a phone expecting I would be getting what was advertised.
From all the replies only 2 made any sense at all.
From what I understood from those intelligent replies, my problems are just software related and will be addressed in the near future and that is the end of it.

I mean it may or may not be addressEd. I don’t know. But 180 Mbps isn’t bad. It’s not like it’s 50 Mbps.

Some SIM cards need to be updated to get true 5G high speeds. Is yours a new SIM?

I had a Hong Kong version of iPhone XS Max with dual nano sim but this time I just bought the European version of the iPhone 12 Pro Max so I had to call my network provider and switch my main line to an eSim, do you think the eSim might be the reason I’m not getting optimal speeds on 5G?
