Is the iPhone 12 really that good or the Android options are so bad?.
Is really poor the user experience in Android?.
I worry because this makes Apple self pleasing, it hampers innovation, improvementa and pushes the prices up.
For many they are in the ecosystem and see no reason to leave…android has some amazing phones but might not seem as polished. Feature wise it’s great but it’s also user experience

Everyone upgrades because they see 5G but meanwhile I'm actually seeing slower speeds in some instances and at best it's about the same as LTE if you're not using mmWave. But then again, mmWave you have to be careful that you don't even put an umbrella between it and the tower (small box on the side of a building) or it can drop your speed quite a bit. 5G seems fairly gimmicky to me so far.

Turned off 5G shortly after I got the 12 and haven't looked back. Often times worse than LTE in my area. Definitely not worth the battery hit.

Now what's ridiculous is that on my Verizon S21, you can't turn off 5G without downloading a special app, and it resets on every reboot. I got nothing against 5G but don't force it on us when it's not as good yet.

There are fewer and fewer flagship Android options now a days, at least in the US. You've got Samsung, Google, and maybe One Plus. And each has their compromises. I was a long time Android user that tried the iPhone every couple years but always went back. Grabbed the iPhone 12 Pro this year and ended up sticking with it.

This is a two year old article but more true than ever: https://www.droid-life.com/2019/07/23/android-oem-options/

I have Sprint/ Tmobile and upgrading my gf from the 11 pro to the 12 pro cut her lease payments by $15 a month. So it was cheaper to get the 12 than keep the 11.
For my dad and roommate who are also on my plan, trading in their iPhone 8 made their 12 and 12 mini free. They had no desire to upgrade, it was only because I was pushing the 12 that they even considered it. I assume I'm not alone in that.
Also, didn't have to change from my Sprint plan, it already included 5G and tethering for free.
Agree. I think the carriers were hurting trying to get people to upgrade (with Covid and all) so those deals made lots of people upgrade (since it was cheaper if not free) when otherwise they would not have upgraded.

I don't know how people are happy with those screen sizes, the SE size is that largest I am going to go unfortunately they will kill it. At 6.7 inches you might as well add a keyboard and mouse to that and call it an iPad Nano.

Yep. Same here. Flat back, too! No stupid wobble on the table.

Apple knows this. Look at their promo images when an iPhone is included. Like the iMac ones. The iPhone is turned FACE DOWN! Gah. They must not have any OCD design people anymore.

I can’t help but laugh at all the iPhone 12 reviews where 5G support was being written off as no better than LTE and not a reason to upgrade unless you cared about taking better low light photos.

I upgraded from the iPhone 10 specifically for 5G support and the sweat heart deal AT&T offered on a 12 upgrade with a trade in. I’ve used AT&T since switching from Verizon in 2007 to buy the original iPhone so that deal was a no brainer. They basically gave the iPhone 12 away if you agreed to rebates paid on a monthly basis in credits over the course of two years. I went with the Pro for the better camera but even that will only wind up costing around $200 in total given the rebates.

Verizon and others had sweetheart deals as well trying to shore up their 5G customer base. 5G was completely and totally worth it. I had terrible WiFi at my home at the time (10 MB down, 5 MB up …. long story as to why) so being able to turn on a 5G hotspot was a god send and I still use the hotspot frequently for work when I’m out and about.

I knew when I read those “meh” reviews that the authors didn’t have a clue what they were talking about. 5G was about a lot more than marketing hype for a large number of people and these sales figures prove it. The camera can’t be written off either if you need to take low light photos. It was such a huge upgrade from the X I couldn’t believe it when I snapped my first few outdoor photographs during the evening. Maybe if you had an 11 or the XR it wasn’t worth it but for anybody on the X or below it was a huge upgrade and there were a ton of people on the X or below when it shipped.

I dont think anyone cared much for 5G or OLED, the most enticing element was probably the first new design/aesthetic change since the iPhone 6 lol

Except in specific markets where it is in the ballpark of 50/50, Android is still the market leader by a lot. But both companies and platforms are healthy and both must still look over each other's shoulders to make a better product. User growth is a requirement for business. They all will look to make improvements when cost/market viability is expected to further user/customer growth.

Apple isn't the only one that is seeing excellent sales. The iPhone super cycle(which is not a fact, only a claim) would largely be expected by Apple. Companies are generally aware of the metrics of how many customers they retain, how often customer sub groups exchange for a new model, a good estimate on how many will spend X for a phone while others only will spend y, how much growth to expect in the market....etc etc. Big companies pend a lot on staff to figure out these metrics.

I don't think some of the Android choices are of poor quality. Because the Android hardware space also competes within itself, that may cause peculiar(to iPhone users) deviations in product. But at the end of the day if an Android user wants a good phone and they are willing to spend some cash to get it, they are there (the Android platform itself lacking better privacy protection not withstanding).

I agree as an overall package Apple are difficult to beat. When people consider their next phone, they don’t only think of their phone. They think of all their other devices and how a new phone will got into that set up.

I use iOS the same reason I use MacOS , the user experience and software on the other side is horrid.

I didn’t care one bit about 5G, but OLED was a must-have. Apple has shipped great LCDs but after using an OLED Samsung for a couple of years there was no going back. If Apple hadn’t gone OLED across the whole line I’d probably still be using that phone as I don’t care for, nor want to spend up for, the huge Pro level models. The 6.1” regular 12 with OLED is my perfect phone.

The flat edge design was a bonus though. I do much prefer it over that slippery rounded edge design.

I'm shocked to have read an entire macrumors article about sales without even one mention of lackluster mini sales.

Not to worry, three or four people will battle that topic out in the comments in no time.

Probably should mention all the government money handed out over the last year…. That probably had more to do with these sales numbers than anything else

On the other hand there was probably a ton of people who fared really bad financially but still those devices were sold - in a time where mobility isn’t necessarily the top priority for many.

This post reminds me of the joke; Two old ladies walk into a crowded restaurant. One says the food is awful. The other says, yeah and such small portions.

Yep the iPhone 12s really that good!
If we were to consider just the hardware specs in the hardware on android you’ll find a lot better options out there however too often The average user will go for android because a cheaper options out there especially on contracts or it’s just water familiar with somebody wants price and you can do anything however the realization is when you actually use the device overall length of time slow down issues and performance if you don’t reboot often enough that’s the problem on the top and devices no matter what you read or hear from somebody else to run a bunch of applications have been running for a while never reboot your phone every 4 to 6 months you will see performance degredation. Overall it’s in how you use your phone and if you don’t want to think about limits or think about the whole performance of the system as you’re using it over and over overtime like you do with your computer that’s the real kicker and the difference of defied some users choices in iPhone or android.
