So, this topic hits home with me. I just had my battery replaced by Apple. I was down to 80% on my iPhone 12 Pro. I am telling you I got a lesson on how we are damaging our batteries and we don't even know it. Certain apps with constant use, apps in the background, and believe it or not, how you charge and when you charge your phone has a big impact. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't have any important email that I need to be notified about, so I shut off the notifications for this and I manually check my email once every hour. Makes a big difference. I would recommend googling on how to save your battery, and it will tell you what can shut off, like background refresh. Lastly, Apple Rep told me if my battery goes below 80 on the health meter then it's time to decide about getting a new battery, for the phone will eventually start lagging, and be less responsive. As we say in medicine, it's going into heart failure.

I always turn background refresh off with every iPhone I purchase, mail notifications I check manually, and I always have low power mode on. My 12 Pro Max is the worst battery out of every iPhone I’ve had. I have to charge 2-3 times a day and carry a portable charger box with me to charge when I’m not home. When I first got my 12 Pro Max, it used to last almost 24 hours, but within the first year it started to decrease. I’m definitely upgrading to the 14 Pro Max this year and having the battery changed on this phone when it hit 80% and use it as a backup phone.

My launch day 12 pro Max has been stuck at 86% for a while now and just checked it on Coconut and it's says 83%. Hmmmm

My iPhone 12 is @ 86% I decided to sell it and get the 12 Pro simply cos I just can’t be bothered going to Apple as it’s a 2 hour journey plus it’s like COVID central still in the city centre!

Are you all going to get new battery’s or sell your Pros on now lol ?

It doesn’t matter. I just changed my iPhone 8 battery with 87% health and had no noticible usage increase in terms of battery life. I went back to store because of them breaking my Touch ID and asked them why there is no battery life increase, and they told me it will only be noticible if battery health is under 80%, which is not a good answer. Then they tried to tell me that all the iOS updates decrease battery life, but still, I am getting the same exact battery life as a four year old 87% battery under the same iOS version. It defeats the laws of thermodynamics. ?

I’m going to get mine changed out when it hit 80% and keep if for a backup phone. I’m upgrading to the 14 Pro Max in the fall.

It’s true I’m sure those latest updates do something to the battery, I thinks Apples way of pushing to upgrade to a newer phone as well!

You will get another 2 years out if it btw I took my iPhone 7 along for the £25 battery replacement when it was on a few years ago I got 4 years out of that phone but then went for the iPhone 12 in 2020 cos I wanted a 5G phone personally 5G isn’t available everywhere still but I do get it in a few locations and it’s pretty quick too!

Enjoy your 8 with its new lease of life ?

It defo would make a nice backup I did consider a 12 Pro Max but I just think it would be to gigantic for my lil wee hand even my partner has declined on getting a Max for that reason lol

Btw I will keep my 12 Pro till this time next year and get the 13 Pro then keep the trend up that way lol ?

If it hadn’t been for the forthcoming hike in Energy costs come this October then I’d of likely got the iPhone 14!

I can understand upgrades having an effect on battery life, but my four-year-old battery was under the same iOS version, so there should have been some change when replaced with new battery. Either they used inferior battery, refurbished battery, old battery, or Apple is somehow messing with battery life via software. I am leaning on it being an old battery, probably as old as the phone. Oh well. Lesson learned.

Next, I will be buying phones with bigger batteries. I am now kind of glad I returned the SE 2022, because after two years of usage, I will be getting half of its advertised life, which cannot be fixed via a battery change. At least with bigger batteries, I would notice a better increase I think, and it should provide better SOT longer.

I started saving for the 14 Pro Max in January this year. I’m mandated to work extra hours at work, so it’s all working out perfectly. I now keep my iPhones for 2 years before upgrading. The upgrade to the 14 will be huge for me, as I’m also still on 14.1 due to its jailbroken, so I’ve missed out on a lot of features in the last 2 years.

My launch day 12 Pro is still showing 100% health. Almost exclusively kept between 40-80% battery level and only ever charged with 5w USB. I use Juice Watch app for on-wrist notifications when the phone reaches my prescribed limits of charge or discharge.

Hi there, with my launch day Iphone 12 Pro Max there is something weird. Battery health reported by apple is 83% and by coconut battery ±93%, after upgrading to IOS 15.4.1. In fairness, after the last update I have noticed dramatically improvement in battery longevity over the day. Any thoughts?

Hmmmm strange. Just checked mine. Basically same as yours. Apple says 86% Coconut says 95.5%.

Purchased on 6 Nov 2020, battery 82% - I can’t even get a full days use out of it.

I also have a speck inside my ultra wide camera. meh!

Ignore coconutBattery’s Health and Maximum/Full Charge Capacity values, they’re estimates. Design Capacity is what the battery manufacturer targets/expects (i.e. it’s generalized). As you can see from posted coconutBattery logs, the values can fluctuate significantly, including higher estimation of max/full charge capacity despite the battery aging, being worn.

Always check it at the same charge % as well.
@BigMcGuire's comment about checking the battery data in coconutBattery (i.e. log) at the same charge level (i.e. percent) each time does seem to help a little.

I try to do full charge cycles (0 -> 100% then 100% to auto-shutoff) as an attempt to keep things calibrated, So it is surprising and interesting to me how much the estimates swing on my devices:

However, my charging routine does seem to improve, maintain the closest accuracy via Apple’s algorithms. That is, I have never seen a substantial/surprising drop in current charge or health (i.e. several percentage in a single step), which have been reported over the years — especially following OS updates.

Ultimately, due to the amount of factors, including some beyond our control, trying to predict the life span of a battery is futile/pointless. Therefore, don’t get stressed about it.

P.S. iOS currently reports my iPhone battery health at 84% — which it has been at for at least a few months.
P.P.S. The battery health reported by iOS/macOS/watchOS is the only one that matters because it is what Apple is going to consider when providing support and allowing battery replacement.
P.P.P.S. Apple should go ahead and implement battery health on iPadOS. They’ve tumbled deep into the rabbit hole already (i.e. sparked discussions like this one).

I'm on the 11 Pro but it's still showing 98% battery health. Is that bogus, or has my charging discipline really paid off?

My coconut battery estimate went from 93% to 100% after the latest IOS update, meanwhile according to IOS I am still at 92% max capacity on my 13 pro Max. Which is more accurate?

Technically, they should be pulling from the same data. I've been hearing more and more reports of this though. 3.9.7 is still the latest version (for coconutBattery). Hmm. <shrug>. I guess we could email the developer.

Just a quick update - 14 months in, 400 battery cycles - 91% battery health. Quite alright IMHO.
Yeah if the 500 80% thing is right, then yeah I'd be happy with 91% 400 cycles. I hope to get to 400 cycles on my current phone! (I rarely get to 250 before I trade it in).

Data point on factory freak battery on launch day phone. I charge on 5W charger (programable plug) that turns on for about 90 minutes in the wee hours of the night.

my battery has been stuck at 89% now for a number of months however, according to Coconut Battery the capacity has actually increased to 95/96% - that seems very strange to me, makes me wonder if Coconut Battery isn't working well with the latest version of iOS.
