I upgraded at the weekend from 11 pro max to 12 pro max and the 12 is worst on battery life by a country mile.

I work in a place where phones are now allowed so it gets left in the cars glove box, The iPhone 11 idle for 12hrs from 100% battery was 95% charged, the iPhone 12 less than 80%.

Now today first real day of use as my first day off work and first day of use on the phone. The phone now is sat not doing anything dropping 1% battery every 2-3 mins idle with all apps closed. When I use the phone say something like a YouTube video and it can drop 10% battery in 2-3mins and the phone is too hot to hold. I am not talking burn yourself but enough to think 'Christ this is hurting".

The iPhone 11 Pro max was NEVER as bad as this and would last me around 2 days with my type of use before I'd have to find a charger , the 12 seems to be wanting charging 2 times a day on the same usage.

I don't know if I've got a defective unit but surely it can't be this bad on battery and this hot compared to the previous flagship model.

You probably killed the battery by leaving it baking inside the car’s glove box

May go hand in hand with this:

There is definitely an issue with the iPhone 12 and it’s battery or software. My Max is also going from 100% to somewhere in the 80% range over night with nothing running

I’ve had a quick read through the comments and I have to say yes I’m having the issues too. When in posted this original post the phone was on 39% it’s probably been 20mins and phone is on 27% and it’s just sat there on the side as I’m using my MacBook.

The phone has had not that much use. As you can see it was taken off charge at 10am’ish and it’s had a rapid discharge with around 4hrs of use.

I suspect there might be batches with bad batteries. Mine has zero issues with battery drain at night and very rapid discharge. I’d definitely exchange for another one if you’re still within the return/exchange window

If the phone gets too hot to hold while watching YouTube vids - there's something wrong with it

Phones don't like staying in cars, freezing and scorching hot are not good for babies nor the phone batteries.
That being said, it shouldn't discharge that fast.
my 12PM is way cooler then my X, but that was getting on a bit and the battery was at 83%.

First thing is to power it down and power it on again. (prob. done that already?)
Perhaps it is still syncing all the data, but it shouldn't do that on wireless and it looks like that is taking too long.
If you have a Mac computer, download the app coconut battery and take a look at your phone battery.
If Covid measures in your area allow, try to visit an Apple shop or if that is not close by an apple certified repair shop.
You could also send it back within the 14 days timeframe if that applies to your sale.

One other thing: think about putting your phone in flight modus while in the glove compartment. Some thieves scan for bluetooth signals and smash the car window to get to the device that is inside.
