Hello. Has anyone else noticed their 12 Pro seems unusually warm when QI charging? I understand it's expected that it will generate some heat but the new phone is warming up more than I'd normally expect. I'm mindful of unnecessarily degrading the battery so would appreciate the experience and thoughts of others. I hope they haven't compromised QI performance in the pursuit of MagSafe (which I'm not interested in).

Thanks.

It should get slightly warmer than checking plugged in.

For sure but this seems way warmer than my previous iPhone on the same charging pad/s. I guess not really important but I'll keep an eye out for any similar comments here or elsewhere. Thanks for the input so far guys

I noticed it yesterday with my car's QI charger. The phone got so hot that animations were stuttering. I was also using wireless CarPlay but it cannot be the reason. Anyway the phone wasn't really charged as it remained on the same percentage during a 1 hour drive. After checking battery stats I noticed the spikes on the graph and it looked like it was charging for a few seconds then stopped charging then started again. I was on 14.2 beta 4 now upgraded to Release Candidate but have yet to check it if it was the culprit.

edit: perhaps it's the magnets in the phone that act up. Found a thread that might explain:

Hmmm interesting. Well I suppose at least I'm not alone in thinking this seems unusual. Might charge mine by cable until more is known. I love Apple but I wouldn't put it past them these days to compromise QI in favour of their own, wired wireless...

Yesterday I used the car's QI charger for about 10-15 minutes and it charged 5% and the phone wasn't hot. Apart from iOS 14.2 final the only change is that the phone is in a leather MagSafe case now.

There definitely an issue. 12 pro max gets so hot with qi 3.0 car adapter attached to car mount charger that it disables the camera flash/flashlight. I have to take it off the mount and let it cool down. I switched to 5v adapter, which won’t charge the phone to full, but will reduce the battery drain with screen always on. Ive tried 3 different mounts with 2 different qi car adapters. All had the same heat issue.

Apple doesn’t make a car charging adapter. Or do they?

My MagSafe charger gets pretty damn hot. Not “overheat the phone” hot, but hot enough that I noticed and was concerned by it.

Yeah I’m also getting overheating issues with my 20w Apple Charger even with my new replacement of 12 Pro Max which also has the exact same issue. The front and back glass get so hot that I can’t touch/hold it. A bit concerning especially if starts causing burns. I don’t know if I should ask for another replacement or just wait for a fix.

You should stop using the 20w charger. The phone should not get so hot, that you can’t even hold it for fear of getting burned. That is not normal.

I know it’s not a normal thing to experience especially coming from 11 Pro Max which didn’t have this issue at all. I’m going back to the 10w and see how I go otherwise gonna have to take another trip to the Apple Genius Bar.

Updating on using the 10w charger, it’s still happening on this charger as well. Here I go to the Apple Store again. I did notice that this overheating issue doesn’t seem to happen if I power off the iPhone which tells me it’s actually a bug in iOS 14 because I’ve tried restoring it and without setting it up (Welcome screen), the overheating is still present while charging.

Its a bug. Pro Max on every qi charger I use. It is not overheating on MagSafe or the old Belkin charging pad. From what I understand it is an IOS 14 bug.

Ive used a 20w, 18w, 10w and a 5w charger (car mount with a 5w, 10w, 18w chargers) and it overheated on every one.

Wow and this hasn’t been fixed in iOS 14.3 betas according to my testing with 10w, 18w, 20w, 30w.

It has to be tied to the magsafe magnets. 3rd party chargers are having issues. Magsafe puck overheated during the initial setup. However, haven’t had an issue since with that.

I second this... sounds like something wrong with the phone OR charging pad. I've never had a phone ever get so hot I was worried about burning myself.

9to5mac reported that one of its readers was told by Apple Support that a fix is coming in the ‘coming days’. This is promising since the issue is pretty widespread now.
