All you need to know about auto brightness is that, to begin with as you find yourself in different lighting conditions, you may need to manually slide the slider up when you feel it’s too dim, or slide it down a bit when it seems too bright. Over a short time the phone will learn your favoured brightness level relative to the ambient light around you, and maintain that, to the point where you rarely if ever need to adjust it yourself anymore.

I've manually adjusted the brightness, and it sticks until I turn off and back on again the auto brightness. It also self adjusts and seems to be a lot better since I increased the brightness and I can now see the screen in the dark without staining my eyes!

In order for auto brightness to work effectively you need to calibrate it.
