New iPhone 13 line with extended battery life and 5g, limited availability in stores creates increase marketplace demand that keeps resale prices high, not at all unexpected.

I really dont see iPhone coming with USB-C

But isnt the depreciation the perception of value? Iphones generally hold their resale value a lot more than any other phones.. this year less people are trading/swapping phones with supply shortages etc, Google Pixel only just came out, lets see these stats updated for after the holidays
the iphone 11 series value dropped like a rock when the 12 came out, 11 pro max was regularly going for 600. the main reason why this year is different is due to 13 not being that big a of a leap like previously and supply shortage.

Imho this is rather meaningless, given that there are still significant lead times on new iPhones, and an abnormal supply chain in general (way beyond chip shortage), 2021 just is not a “normal” year to make such comparisons
What do you mean it's meaningless? I was planning on trading in my iPhone 13 right now...then wait almost a year for the 14 to launch. That's a good plan, right?

Obviously, they're still backordered in some places. Same with the Series 7, people are scalping them on Swappa because they're a hot Christmas item and supply is limited. Supply can't meet demand so the resell value increases, this is highschool economics.

IMO, demand is much lower than @ this time last year, but that obtaining one's desired 13 Pro OR Pro Max is 3x-5x more challenging !

BTW, I check Apple's Availability Status almost every single day for select new models, including the 2021 iPad mini, which is their highest-in-demand new product !

I consider almost-Daily Availability Snapshots to be the best way to circumvent the BS put out by the so-called Pro Stock Analysts who cover AAPL for a living, regarding iPhone Unit Sales.

Also, 5G is NOT an Apple story, it's a Qualcomm & cellular service provider Story !

Apple simply benefited by supplying a consumer product into a market in which, at least here in the States, the cellular service providers beat each other up trying to get new, & keep existing, customers.

5G was the story prior to the launch of the iPhone 13 family, at least from a Marketing perspective.

The 13 iPhones have better 5G components, but the cellular service providers used-up most of their Ammo prior their launch in Sept.

The 12 iPhones sold well right up to the launch of the 13 iPhones.

I would NOT be surprised if Apple soon announces a Guidance Warning, simply because of bigger than expected supply constraints !

IMO, Apple may have to back-track on their solid Y2Y revenue growth statement !

How many 13 Pro & 13 Pro Max iPhones does Apple think they'll sell the last half of Dec ?

Anybody expecting a surge during that period ?

I think enthusiasm has mostly died down for the new iPhones.

The 14 iPhones could sell exceptionally well, however, based-upon the Renders I've seen.

With so many high tech items becoming hard to buy right now, it’s not surprising the iPhone 13 is holding a higher value. Once (or if) things return to some state of normalcy, then there could be a big dip. As the article mentioned, it won’t really benefit the next iPhone. As another member mentioned, when Apple moves the iPhone and the rest of iPads over to USB-C, it will tank the market since Lightning would play a factor for some people getting pre-owned Apple devices.

The market for unlimited 5G plans you mean? Cuz that's why T-M gave you this fab trade-in.

That’s to entice older iPhone owners to make the move. They can resell the old ones to people who don’t want newer hardware. Plus, refurbish the old ones for warranty and replacement claims since those are thinning out as well.

I just received an $800 trade-in credit from T-Mobile on an iPhone X. The market is a total mess right now.

You can't necessarily use carrier "trade-in credits" to gauge the used market. A big chunk of that $800 was T-Mobile inflating the trade value to get (or keep) you on a top level Magenta MAX plan for a while.

Apple actually lowered their trade values on most iPhones earlier in the month.

It's holding value because it's an essential tool during these weird times. Everyone knows that having an iPhone 13 in 2021 is guaranteed 5+ years of updates from today. So, it has the latest crazy powerful SOC and massive battery upgrade--a no brainer for the average person (and enthusiast!) to want.

Even the used iPhone market is doing pretty good. Look at the XS Max value... not bad for a 3 year old phone. It's still cracking $500 for a perfectly mint condition one!

I think during peak pandemic times, Apple cemented itself even more as a luxury brand that is very dependable and reliable. You know how hard it is to market a company to be perceived as both? The 2020 SE was a nuclear bomb that Apple dropped last year.

A customer won’t get anything like that from Apple. Their trade value for an iPhone XS Max dropped to $280 earlier this month, although you can typically do better at other buying sites.

Oh, I don't even include trade-ins because typically you get nothing. I was more talking about other sites and in-person sales like on OfferUp, FB Marketplace and Craigslist for example.

I don't go by what Apple's trade-ins say at all--they've never been good except maybe recently.

After the iPhone makes the switch to USB-C, the used iPhone market will tank in general.
Just like how everyone though Intel MacBooks would devalue to nothing overnight... Lmao.

No one cares what type of cord they have to use to charge their phone that much. Apple won't ever put out a USB-C iPhone, it will just be full wireless.

Great point. I picked up a MagSafe charging puck at the same time I picked up my new 13 Pro Max. I'll only use a lightning cable to charge my phone when I absolutely have to.

This is good hopefully I will get more for my trade in since I upgrade every year.
