“The bigger they are, the harder they fall”
That's a very good point. My screen doesn't seem to have been cracked because of direct impact on concrete, but more like falling on the metal side (even though covered with the rubberized side), and doing pressure with the weight of the phone, the glass chipped off.

Similar thing happened to me. Brand new 13 Pro Max in Apple Leather Case. I’ve had a X, XS Max, 11 Pro Max, and 12 Pro Max all in Apple Leather Cases, and they were dropped many times on many surfaces and I never broke a screen. One small drop yesterday, and it was an honest small drop, even going by negligible case scuff compared to falls taken in the old cases, but the screen cracked in the top-left corner. I can’t tell if it’s pressure from the stainless band or if something actually hit it in just the right spot, but I’m really not thrilled to say the least. My other phones have been through far worse in the same line of cases and came out unscathed.
Oh no! That sucks 😖

Yes, I have a case. And a screen protector. And an external battery for recharging the phone. And a cable. I would prefer to have an all-in-one ruggedized iPhone.

And in my case it appears to be the GPS that drains the battery, so in your setup is the GPS on your Garmin? On a typical hillwalking trip I am walking about 10-12 hours/day, so generally I have to top up the phone during lunch and then overnight. Of course I carry a printed map and compass as a backup, but I just prefer the convenience of using the phone. Also, adding satellite functionality for SOS texts to the iPhone, if it is possible, would be reassuring, as would an attachment point for a lanyard. I think if Apple sold a sport version of the iPhone it would find an untapped market.
It is indeed. The Garmin does all the work, and that'll last about 20 hours (according to spec). You can even buy an external battery pack for longer touring rides, but that's the last thing I want on my road bike.

The phone provides internet connectivity.

I see your thought process regarding a rugged iPhone, but there is such a minimal market for this, it's just not in Apple's interest to do this. Panasonic and other laptop manufacturers have done this in the past and they sell for huge premiums in tiny volumes for very specialized purposes. This is why rugged cases exist. My Otterbox case is used for rides only and is brilliant. It's taken a hard fall when I came off once and not a scratch on the phone.

Fair point - while I think they would find a market, perhaps it would not be big enough to justify the requisite investment. I had envisioned an iPhone with titanium frame, extra protection against drops, larger battery, energy optimised GPS , satellite SOS facility, lanyard attachment to reduce the chance of dropping the phone, and specialised settings to reduce energy consumption. Alas, I think you are right. It'll never happen. :(
