Improvements on the actual lenses is key, I’d prefer improvements on the zoom lens, eg 3x or 4x optical zoom over the wide angle...

I know most of you don’t agree, but my iPhone 11 pro takes such sharp and good fotos - its crazy - and i dont wanna watch them because they are too good - too much detail - am from the 80s and not used to so much depth - its too much for me already!
I love my 11ProMax’s camera capabilities, but there’s lots of improvements still needed and possible on the actual lenses, eg better optical zoom, digital doesn’t really do a lot...
I also have a 24MP full frame DSLR so I’m used to even more detail 😎 but, if you’re not an enthusiast I see your point...

Camera updates are great, but Touch ID in some form would make my life while wearing a welding mask much nicer!
As much as I would like to have Touch ID now, I don’t really think it’s possible for Apple to make that happen this quick.

It’s not like they started from scratch with the 13 the day after 12 was released. 13 was probably more likely 80-90% done already back when 11 came out.

Nobody really expected that showing your face in public would become such a huge issue a few years later.

If they can make Touch ID happen, will anyone still care in 2022 or 2023 when it can hit the market?

Hopefully the mask have gone away by then anyway.

It wasn't until the 3GS did iPhones have autofocus ;)

But yeah I'm not sure the significance of that being called out, I assume it's that they aren't using something like ToF or another advanced type of focus.
I think the ultrawide does NOT have autofocus. I think it is a fixed focus lens. They might be moving to add a pixel shift ("focus pixels") based auto-focus, this year.

Go see the tech specs, no mention of autofocus for the iphone's ultra wide camera.

Remove the ultra wide and add lenses on the other side of the spectrum instead.

At some point these camera improvements just stop really making a difference to the average consumer. Camera improvements no longer motivate me to upgrade my iPhone.

But the ultra wide the article is talking about is easily the worst camera on the iPhone. Even in decent lighting it can be extremely noisy, and in low light it's almost unusable. They desperately need to improve it. Wouldn't say improving it isn't making a difference to the average consumer.

More and more I realize that Apple needs to increase the zoom on the telephoto lens, because there is very utility to this lens at the moment. Apart from a little extra zoom outdoors, the phone will still use the Wide lens whenever the light conditions are not perfect. In fact, unless the next Telephoto lens is periscopic, I would rather the Pro models have only the Wide and Ultreawide lenses but with larger sensors.
I agree, this needs to be something like 70mm+ equivalent (currently it's 52mm eq.), and ideally also with a wider aperture but I don't know if that's possible with the size constraints. If it was a real portrait range in the 70mm-105mm zone, I'd use it a lot.

All of this improvements are nice, however, having Touch ID under the screen is what, ultimately, will make me buy a new phone. Otherwise I will keep using my iPhone 8

Be glad there is even a mini. And it’s allegedly not selling well. If it doesn’t do well this year I can see Apple killing it next year.
Right, but you're making my point for me. This is Apple's continuous cycle of stupidity. They gimp the smaller phones with far fewer features, then a year later say "Look! No one is buying this! See, this is why we won't make small phones anymore!"

I don't know why they are so obsessed with "Smaller phone = must be budget and less premium."

Everyone I know who wants a small phone, wants one with a comparable feature set. Of course we aren't buying it -- it's an inferior product. Give us the same features of the larger phones, THEN do a proper comparison and see how they sell.

Good photography was around in the 80s too.

It was a mainstream business doing mass market products. You may may not have used it to the degree you could.
I guess you have no idea about the 80s in Austria - and what was available to the average person.

ofCourse we had photo cameras but not with a good quality - even the film rolls were crazy expensive.

I grew up on Germany as a next door neighbour. Are you saying you guys didn’t get the same gear into your hands at the time? Because I learned film photography with a beginner slr in the 80s.

also the average customer isn't upgrading that often in the first place. tech lovers is who all these big features are always focused at in the first place

agree ultra wide is quite weak in comparison to the other lens.

I don’t know whats your purpose here - but i had a kodak camera with a small disc inside - and the photos were nothing near to my iphone 11pro. Even the fotos of my 2010 around Nikon spiegelreflex camera (although maybe better overall) are not close in sharpness to what my iphone produces in portrait mode.

hmm, yeah you're right, just tested out my 12 mini and there is no changing of focus on the ultra wide lens.

The biggest gripe I hear is the battery life. And you’re not gonna get a big battery in a small phone. I could care less though if they kill it. I love the big screen phones. I’ve had the 6 Plus, the iPhone X, XS Max, 11 Pro Max and now the 12 Pro Max.
