My wife and I are on a 4-year cycle.

I have the 12 Pro Max from 2020. I plan on upgrading in 2024.

My wife had the XR from 2018 so I was going to get her the 14 Plus, but she decided she wanted the improved camera so I ordered the 14 Pro Max (just a few days ago though).
Your wife will enjoy the improvement. Hopefully you got 256 or higher

Nah, with a 2 TB iCloud account, there is no need for anything more than 128 GB, and we don't shoot ProRes video, so 256 GB will be of no benefit to us.
We have the 2TB iCloud as well, however, mine wanted the option of using the ProRes video so she opted for the 256GB

The 14 Pro needed a substantial camera upgrade which it did not get.
Yes, it did. The camera upgrades were the headlining feature of the 14 Pro.
We got
Photonic Engine
48MP Main Camera (AKA Pixel Binning (much better low light photos), 8K ProRAW photos, and 2x Zoom)
Action Mode
4K Cinematic Mode
Better selfie camera

With diminishing returns settling in, I think 8K photos, better low light, and 4K Cinematic made this year's camera upgrades significant.

Also, out of curiosity, what would you consider to be a substantial camera upgrade? Serious question.

If that’s the case why do we need to know that or why comment at all? Just curious

So we won’t hear from you for 5 years, right?

I just thought I’d provide a contrasting viewpoint. The US media always seems complicit in company’s marketing schemes aimed at getting people to buy more, more, more. It’s not necessary, it is better for the planet to buy what you need only, care for it well and use it as long as you can.

I have a 13 Pro Max and was considering upgrading to the 14 Pro Max, I’m on a 24 month contract but allows me to upgrade every 12 month, worked out the 14 Pro Max would cost me an extra £120 a year, I played about with mine and a 14 Pro Max a mate had at work, and I honestly could not find a reason to upgrade and find it worth the extra £10 per month, I’ll wait for (I’m assuming they will be) the 15 Pro Max.

Yea unless you want to pay off the installments and use a trade in offer from a carrier, it's better to wait. Even crazier they are going to 36 months. Wish they'd at least let you pick the term. For some, I think a longer term would prompt them to wait longer just so it's paid off before they upgrade. And with 36 if do like to upgrade yearly, even to do the installment trade it, you have to pay six months of payments first to be eligible

Yes, I heard someone mention 36 months contracts but not really read much into it, I’m with EE but I also have to bare in mind that come April next year the cost of inflation will inevitably push up the monthly cost of the tariff, so that will add on another couple of quid a month, I used to be a stickler for upgrading and keeping up to date with the latest phones, however I’m just looking now and thinking that whether it’s Apple or Samsung or whoever else, it’s just cashing in, minor upgrades and trying to get people who are on the phones lower than the 12 model to upgrade to the 14, rather than targeting the audience of 12 upwards, so come next year when the so called big one comes up being the 15 model, they upgrade again, along with the 12 and upward crowd.

Going back to the 36 months contracts if they start up, again I’m wondering if it’s just a cash in and excuse from the mobile companies to make more money, if they bring out 36 months contracts, they’ll charge the same price as 24 months contract, then push up the price of the 24 months contracts, that I won’t be surprised 🤔

Yea the carriers make bupkis off of devices. They want you to stay for the service charges. I guess that's why iUP is still 24, since Apple wants you to upgrade faster.

Very interesting you should say that, even though the contract is with EE, the catch is with upgrading every 12 month, they want me to trade the 13 Pro Max in to upgrade to the 14 Pro Max, as opposed to keeping it for 24 month then it’s mine, I’m guessing it supposedly off sets the remainder of the remainder of the 24 months contract, in there somewhere they are probably pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes with the clause knowing that if I chose to sell the handset myself, I would get better value on it, more so interestingly, not that I’m interested in changing because I switched from android to Apple and enjoy the experience, when I looked at other contracts that weren’t Apple phones, my carrier said I would have to ring them to upgrade over the phone, where as looking at the contracts that involved upgrading from one Apple phone to another, it was more than happy to let me do it without ringing the carrier.

I'm with EE and use an iPhone 13 Pro Max that I bought outright. If I wanted to get an iPhone 14 Pro Max with a contract it would be £80 upfront and £100 a month! That is absolutely insane!

It’s similar with me now, I pay 85 per month, it’s free for me to upgrade, however if I upgrade to the 14 Pro Max they want to up that to 98 per month, which is a big reason why I’m not upgrading to it, plus the fact it really isn’t worth paying £10 a month more for such a slight upgrade.

I read somewhere that says experts predict that the iPhone 14 models will be the lowest selling model this year out of the 12, 13, 14 models, I read an article where someone claimed that the iPhone 14 should really be the upgrade that never was, which I can see the point, these mobile companies every year say that sales are struggling, well maybe if they stopped bringing slight upgrades out every year then people won’t get bored with seeing the same old, there was a time when mobile companies didn’t bring out so many upgrades out in one year, I remember when Sony were doing it, to the point they were bringing phones out sometimes not even waiting a year, went the way of the dodo for them.

The comments are pretty funny. I'm upgrading from a 6S+. I keep my stuff until it stops working, and it rarely stops. My 6 is still functioning fine. I want more memory and a better camera.

I did that 36 month term once, then no more. I quickly left being locked into my Service Provider, and went to Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program. I have the flexibility to upgrade after 1 year, or just hold onto it and wait until it's the right time for me. Not to mention, my phone comes unlocked to allow for switching carriers as I want if/when I travel internationally.
