I don’t think it will have a port. If it ever were to adopt USB-C, it would probably be a future “micro” version, but not likely. It will use a dongle you can buy for the smart connector, which will probably move to the bottom, if you need to plug it into a Mac or use special accessories. The iPad will keep USB-C because it’s essentially becoming a Mac “lite.”
My wife is all about these smaller models. Looking forward to getting one for her to replace her first gen SE so she has a better camera.
What I don’t get is all the screen size changes lately, both for iPad and now iPhone. Why make it 5.4” this year and 5.5” the next? Either make this years model 5.5” in a slightly larger body and trim the body next year, or keep the 5.4” and make the body come down to match the screen size when the bezel is slightly reduced next year. Isn’t this really annoying for developers? I know they have tools now that make it easier but it’s still got to be a pain to test on so many display sizes.
