Even Apple doesn’t know what the 13 will be like can we get the next one out first

I just don't get these mockups: sure, they show imagination and give voice to what we want, but other than that, how are they any more helpful than if I drew a banana shaped iPhone?

Another Fudge leak from late last month suggested Apple's iPhone 13 lineup will be portless, combining wireless charging with a Smart Connector system for data transfer.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also said that the high-end 2021 iPhone will have a "completely wireless experience."

Whether we'll end up with a port-free design, USB-C, or another year with Lightning remains to be seen, but past rumors have said that in the long-term, Apple wants an iPhone without external ports and buttons.

By the end of "this year," many with a High-End Lightning-based iPhone will be capturing Audio, for their Videos, via up-to two Ext Mics !

So if Apple does in-deed ultimately go Portless, they will have created a Black Eye for themselves !

I could see the iPhone going notch-free in 2021. Hell, even Samsung hasn't gone all screen yet and we know they love pushing the boundaries. We will likely see an all-screen Samsung S21 in the beginning of 2021, with the Note and iPhone to follow in the Fall.

The corners on the "photo" look incredibly ugly. No way is this something coming from Apple.

We can hope you’re wrong. A phone without ports is a VERY Jony Ive concept which has absolutely zero demand from customers. No one is asking for this. On the other hand, many, many customers would see the value in using a standard port, not only those in households that have both iPhones and other phones, but even hardcore apple fans who own Macs and iPads as well.

Anyway, Jony Ive is gone thank goodness so perhaps we will see a decision that is rooted in reality instead of some misguided notion of “elegance.“
$ says Apple will gladly sell a (battery?) case with a smart connector to USB-C adapter built in.

Apple will stay with Lightning until they decide to drop the connector altogether. There's no USB-C in that plan.

And only the high-end iPhone in 2021 is expected to be completely wireless.
I once thought the same about the MacBooks.. then iPad.. and wouldn’t you know, USB C is actually really useful on these. And it would be amazing having just one cable for all devices again.

As content creation devices, the MacBook and iPad Pro deserve USB-C. But how many consumers are connecting iPhone to a monitor or external storage?

We still have a few months to go before Apple unveils the iPhone 12, but rumors about the iPhone 13, coming in fall 2021, are already circulating.

iphone13mockup.jpg

Japanese site Mac Otakara today shared a rough 3D printed mockup of a 5.5-inch iPhone said to be coming in 2021, which is from "Alibaba sources." The model may be built on leaked specifications and rumors, but where the info comes from is unclear.

It's a successor to the smaller 5.4-inch iPhone that's expected in 2020, so likely one of the lower-end devices in the 2021 lineup, if accurate. It's the same size as the rumored 5.4-inch iPhone, but design changes provide more available display space.

The iPhone features no notch for the TrueDepth camera, and the FaceTime camera is located in the front center. Mac Otakara suggests the iPhone could use Samsung's Under Panel Sensor technology, which would allow cameras to be positioned under a display. The site also speculates about a possible bottom-of-screen camera, a rumor we haven't heard before and which seems unlikely.

Along with no notch, the mockup features ultra thin bezels, and while the camera module is not fleshed out, there are dots that suggest open space for testing different camera modules. Late last month, leaker Fudge (@choco_bit) said that the higher-end iPhone models coming in 2021 will feature four camera setups with LiDAR technology, but it's not clear if that information is accurate.

One other major design change appears to be a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port. There have been rumors about Apple swapping over to USB-C for years now. Another Fudge leak from late last month suggested Apple's iPhone 13 lineup will be portless, combining wireless charging with a Smart Connector system for data transfer.

Whether we'll end up with a port-free design, USB-C, or another year with Lightning remains to be seen, but past rumors have said that in the long-term, Apple wants an iPhone without external ports and buttons.

Mac Otakara says the mockup depicts just one prototype that's under development, so Apple's plans may ultimately change and this mockup is unlikely to represent the final version of the iPhone that we see in 2021.

My guess is that Lightning will be replaced with Smart Connector. iPad Pro charges pretty nicely over Magic Keyboard's Smart Connector.
The smart connector charges very slowly. If you are doing some intensive work the smart connector cannot keep the iPad fully charged.

I’d love to be able to connect to an external monitor to show a slide deck from my phone.

Really, rumors for iPhone 13 now, today... without the 12 ones materializing just yet.
Hating this rumors train of thought... say something, never follow up on it because there’s no real confirmation, the say something else next week... not feeling like giving views and ad income in the long term like this.

THIS. One of many giant flaws in this insane "smart" connector plan every weirdo on here is pushing today.

It's also worth pointing out that a "smart" connector adds ten times the annoyance of the 30-pin to lightning transition. Every single thing normal people plug their phone into, from cars, to chargers at home and elsewhere, to batter, will absolutely need a weird proprietary dongle...to adapt to some gimpy connector which only charges slowly and can't even do high speed data? This, so we can have what, slightly more water resistance? Are you kidding me? Who is diving with iPhone? They already are fine in a couple meters of water for a reasonable time. They're fine in a tub, a pool. What are we, fish? And I'll eat my iPhone if Apple were to ship a phone complete with a warranty that actually covered water damage - regardless of the IP rating claimed. No, they won't because no one does that. There's always going to be a depth and time where water can seep in and they're not going to stand behind a blanket claim of waterproofness. So it'll always be a not-guaranteed "asterisk" for water, even if they removed the ports, speakers, mic, and SIM slot.

Wireless Carplay has also been cited as a justification for why it's ok to take away the wired carplay feature -- this based on the goofy Chinese hack jobs that have been made (search youtube for demos), which are unreliable, take forever to connect and add lag, when they work. Apple doesn't make one. As much as they love dongles you can bet that if they considered it possible to do in a satisfying way via dongle they'd have happily already made it and priced it at $199. As for built-in, it's nice but it still doesn't even have 50% of cars on lots today let alone the millions of cars on the road which do have wired carplay.

Again I encourage the "you don't need a port" Crack smokers to explain what on earth could possibly justify the deletion of the only port on the phone, in favor of a bad "connector" with essentially zero current adoption*, when the vast majority of users have demonstrated that they prefer wired charging and the ability to use Carplay without expensive and unreliable adapters.

*come on, random iPad keyboards are not something that moves the needle one bit toward people wanting to have that connector on an iPhone.

If the next iphone doesn't have USB-C, I'm buying an Android. If they go portless though I'm through with Apple entirely and will switch my whole family. iMessage be damned lol.

Then why did they go all USB-C on MBP back in 2016?

Portless device. Bad idea. Wireless transfer is so slow compared to wired. I manage my music and photo albums on my Mac and to move tens of gigs over wireless? Pass.

Plus the vast majority of vehicles don’t have wireless charging built in. How will you use an external battery? Charge at airports?

So you totally missed the “smart connector” part of all this then...

Not that that’s necessarily the answer since the current smart connected isn’t exactly fast but they have, or will have, a solution that doesn’t excessively compromise. They won’t just settle for ultra slow transfers.

Not too often, but when I do, it takes hours over wireless. Airdrop is ok for a few things here and there, but we all have our own needs. If a phone goes fully wireless, I wouldn't be a buyer.

This happens all the time.We hear rumors of them removing something and how stupid that’s going to be but when they finally do it the outcome is good because they solved the stupid somehow.

They’ll do that here too. They’ll have come up with some much faster wireless solution by then or it’ll be a smart connector or some other solution.

Think how haptic feedback made a buttonless home button feel like a button - feel better in fact because the feedback options are more extensive.

AirPods, Powerbeats pro, lightning headphones, etc. we’re their solutions to removing the headphone jack. Ok that decision is still controversial, but it’s not like they just removed it and left us with no alternatives.

Removing ports will be the same. They’ll redefine the EXPERIENCE somehow and it will be better than the current experience (like AirPods and haptic feedback are). Let go of “features” and “specs” and consider how Apple is always about the experience. The features and specs get chosen only to serve that end.

Love it or hate it, but that’s always been Apple’s unique MO and it’s the primary “secret” of their success.

How stupid. It's obvious the notch never mattered a bit, only to prepubescent boys trying to act like they know something.
