Apple is expected to continue to offer four iPhone options in 2021, with the iPhone 13 to be identical in design to the iPhone 12 with few changes, according to a new report today from Japanese site Mac Otakara that cites sources within the Chinese supply chain.

The height and width of the four iPhone models are expected to remain the same, but thickness could increase by approximately 0.26mm.

The rear camera unit is expected to increase in size by 0.9mm on all iPhone 13 models, and Apple will shift to a design that "covers the entire camera unit with sapphire glass." The lenses are expected to protrude less in a design that's more similar to the 2020 iPad Pro, which has a thick camera bump but less protrusion when it comes to the lens design.

Mac Otakara believes that the iPhone 13 Pro could feature sensor-shift optical image stabilization, a feature that Apple included in the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

As for the front of the iPhone 13, the site suggests that the TrueDepth camera "is getting narrower" because the receiver at the top of the display will move to the edge of the case. This suggests that the notch on the next-generation iPhone could be slightly thinner.

This is the second time that we've heard rumors of a thinner or shallower notch, so it's possible the 2021 iPhone models will have a notch that's the same length but not as tall.

Other iPhone 13 rumors have suggested we could see some models getting LTPO OLED displays with support for 120Hz refresh dates, and there will, of course, be a faster A15 chip. We have more on what to expect from the iPhone 13 in our dedicated roundup.

Pet peeve: If it's sensor shift, it's not optical. They are two different image stabilization technologies. With sensor shift image stabilization, the imaging sensor is held in a magnetic cradle that moves the sensor to reduce the effects of hand shake. With optical image stabilization, there is a lens element that is compensating for shake. Sensor shift optical image stabilization is not a real thing.

I don't know. I gave my 11 Pro Max to my gf and each time I look at that phone I think my 12 Pro Max looks like a brick in comparison. And it feels like that, too. I preferred the old design. But the same is true for the iPad Pro - only that this also has the 'advantage' to always be a little bent.

If the notch is narrower simply because the receiver is moved, that means the tech itself is still the same, or there’s a technological/physical limit on the hardware. I wonder if the hardware is still the same as the 1sr gen FaceID on the iPhone X. We saw TouchID gen 2 and gen “3” on the iPad Air. But on FaceID, Apple doesn’t seem to indicate any major improvements other than faster recognition through improvement of the A chip itself. Curious if Apple is facing a hurdle, as his means the notch will stay forever until Apple moves to another biometric.

Please... Touch ID. That's all I care about. Of all the phones that needed to bring Touch ID back, it was the iPhone 12 series.
By the time the pandemic hit last year the design of iphone 12 was long locked in. But Apple will surely address the masks issue in iphone 13 somehow. They'll either include Touch ID (in the power button) in addition the Face ID or maybe they'll figure out how to make Face ID work with masks. waiting to see the rumors which it will be.

Forever waiting for the notch to go.
The notch doesn't bother me like it seems to with so many here. It is the state of tech at the moment for Apple. Doing away with the notch isn't going to free up a lot of useable screen real estate for me at this point in time. If it vanishes in a few years, that is fine as well.

They should be able to add Touch ID to the power button like on the iPad Air so the mask thing is somewhat solved. AAll I really want is an iPhone mini with telephoto lens, or hell just give it all the pro features with 3 cameras! But really all I care about is telephoto over wide angle. I could care less if there is a notch or not.
