Apple is expected to continue to offer four iPhone options in 2021, with the iPhone 13 to be identical in design to the iPhone 12 with few changes, according to a new report today from Japanese site Mac Otakara that cites sources within the Chinese supply chain.

The height and width of the four iPhone models are expected to remain the same, but thickness could increase by approximately 0.26mm.

The rear camera unit is expected to increase in size by 0.9mm on all iPhone 13 models, and Apple will shift to a design that "covers the entire camera unit with sapphire glass." The lenses are expected to protrude less in a design that's more similar to the 2020 iPad Pro, which has a thick camera bump but less protrusion when it comes to the lens design.

Mac Otakara believes that the iPhone 13 Pro could feature sensor-shift optical image stabilization, a feature that Apple included in the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

As for the front of the iPhone 13, the site suggests that the TrueDepth camera "is getting narrower" because the receiver at the top of the display will move to the edge of the case. This suggests that the notch on the next-generation iPhone could be slightly thinner.

This is the second time that we've heard rumors of a thinner or shallower notch, so it's possible the 2021 iPhone models will have a notch that's the same length but not as tall.

Other iPhone 13 rumors have suggested we could see some models getting LTPO OLED displays with support for 120Hz refresh dates, and there will, of course, be a faster A15 chip. We have more on what to expect from the iPhone 13 in our dedicated roundup.

USB-C?

Sounds like a minor bump... Hoping for more...
It’s mind blowing that every year somebody says this. What do you expect tech companies to do when they release smart phones on annual basis? Just overhaul the entire system and bring all new features? They purposely ration their features to give consumers a reason to upgrade. Every year they implement new technology with Face ID, LiDAR, design, and now 120HZ displays.

From my perspective, I think consumers like yourself don’t appreciate all the technology the phone offers and/or you’re just not the appropriate candidate to upgrade to next year‘s model.

Can we just stop with the ****ing comments about the notch. I never notice the dang thing. You people with your continued comments about the notch kill me. You have nothing else to do with you time. As I type this blistering email. I’m not even looking at the tip 50% of my phone screen.

Yes. And then they talk about the size of the ****ing notch. It kills me. Before the notch there was weaker technology. Introduce the notch and people spend endless hours talking about the size of the notch...no notch, etc. they are killing me. Look at what we have in smartphone technology and shut the **** up. Imagine if we had a negative notch size? Someone would find away to complain why the notch was negative 6 mm wide.

This has been rumored 3 years in a row now, then debunked 2 weeks prior launch. Who even believes these anymore😂
Lol so true 😂. I don't think Apple is going to remove the notch until it perfects under display camera technology. Apple is going to keep using the same design factor of the iphone and make a major change by removing the notch in iphone 14 or 15. Likewise Apple kept using the same phone design with thick bezels from iphone 5 onwards while competitors kept on shrinking bezels and increasing screen real estate. And then suddenly, Apple made a major design change by completely removing all bezels and making the iphone X almost all-screen except for the notch for face ID, putting it two years ahead of competitors in terms of an all-screen phone.

I assume they're officially done with the 'S' naming scheme then of 'off years'. I did like it though, it gave every second year a catch-up for specs and hardware, but meant the design stayed the same. I do wonder why they wouldn't just keep it permanently. But I guess with no 11S with 5G it made sense. Perhaps they're thinking the 120hz is good enough for skipping 12S. Still prefer them have it though.

Please... Touch ID. That's all I care about. Of all the phones that needed to bring Touch ID back, it was the iPhone 12 series.
Seriously. Under the screen, built into the power button like the iPad... whatever. I don’t care, I just want it back. Face ID was unreliable at best before the pandemic and now it’s just ridiculous. Many many countries mandate masks and pulling it down isn’t an option (and I don’t know why but entering my passcode never seems to work on the first try — extremely clumsy).

Am I the only one hearing a variation of the Monty Python SPAM sketch here?

Scene: An Apple store. One table is occupied by a group of Vikings with horned helmets on. A man and his wife enter.

Man: You sit here, dear.
Wife: All right.
Man (to Waitress): Morning!
Apple Genius: Morning!
Man: Well, what've you got?
Apple Genius: Well, there's the iPhone X with a notch, The iPhone 11 with a notch, the iPhone 11 Pro with a notch ...
Vikings (starting to chant): Notch, notch, notch, notch ...
Apple Genius: the iPhone 11 Pro Max with a notch, the iPhone 12 with a notch, the iPhone 12 Pro with a notch ...
Vikings (singing): Notch! Lovely notch! Lovely notch!
Apple Genius: ... the iPhone 12 Pro Max with a notch, or the iPhone 12 with a notch.
Wife: Have you got anything without a notch?
Apple Genius: Well, there's the iPhone 13 with a notch, that's not got much of a notch in it.
Wife: I don't want ANY notch!
Man: Why can't she have the iPhone 13 with a notch?
Wife: THAT'S got a notch in it!
Man: Hasn't got as much of a notch in it as the iPhone 12 with a notch, has it?
Vikings: Notch, notch, notch, notch (crescendo through next few lines)
Wife: Could you do the iPhone 13 with a notch, but without a notch in it?
Apple Genius: Urgghh!
Wife: What do you mean 'Urgghh'? I don't like notches!
Vikings: Lovely notch! Wonderful notch!)
Apple Genius: Shut up!
Vikings: Lovely notch! Wonderful notch!
Apple Genius: Shut up! (Vikings stop) Bloody Vikings! You can't have an iPhone 13 with a notch without the notch.
Wife (shrieks): I don't like notches!
Man: Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your notch. I love it.
I'm having the iPhone 14 with TWO notches and a case!
Vikings (singing): Notch, notch, notch, notch. Lovely notch! Wonderful notch!
Apple Genius: Shut up!! We're all out of cases.
Man: Well could I have her notch instead of the case then?
Apple Genius: You mean the iPhone 15 with notch, notch, notch, notch, notch... (but it is too late and the Vikings drown her words)
Vikings (singing elaborately): Notch, notch, notch, notch. Lovely notch! Wonderful notch!
Man: Never mind. I'll just take something with USB-C.

im disappointed in my iPhone 12 Pro Max this phone supposed to have that smaller notch and 120Hz, the headline feature of 2021 iPhone Pros will be smaller notch and 120hz, that is rumored to be on iPhone 12 Pros before, and if smaller notch and 120hz just made it to iPhone 12 Pros then 2021 iphones will be a minor upgrade then.

You knew the phone would have the same sized notch and a 60Hz display... then you bought it, and were disappointed because it was exactly the phone you knew it was? 🐑
