I'll get the 12S (13) mini because I'm still on a 5S but the real "new" phone should be the 14, I can't wait more to a 14, so I'll get the 12S (13).
To be fair the 12 is really an 11S with squared off edges. It got faster cpu/gpu, but man the battery hit it took on the 12 Pro/Pro Max models was HUUUUGE. The 11 Pro/Pro Max were far superior. The 13mini this year has equal to if not better battery life than the 12Pro(11S) which was only released ~10.5 months ago. The 13 and 13 Mini also get the upgraded 800nits/1200HDR that the "Pro's" from not even a year ago have...

If you pay monthly, the price difference between 13 and 13 Pro is tough to notice IMO.
At the end of it you're still out the same amount of money. I'm not a huge fan of these tricks to obfuscate how much you're actually spending. Is that how we ended up with flagships that cost triple what they used to?

I haven’t been a major fan of Apple’s leather cases. Silicone provides better protection and grip. They do have a blue silicone case. I’d also check an alternative such as Vaja.
Interesting. I have an Apple black leather case on my 11 Pro Max and like it very much. Durability is fine as long as you keep it dry. When I tried an Apple silicon case it didn't seem durable at all. It got scruffy very fast. Better of course in a wet environment than the leather but many city dwellers are not going to get their phones wet very often. If I planned to get my phone wet, I'd choose a different case altogether, probably an Otterbox Symmetry or similar.

I think on this whole zoom lens issue, Apple does not call the lens a zoom lens, it calls it a telephoto lens. And it says it's got 3x optical zoom, not "up to 3x optical zoom". So it's fixed at 3x (2x on the 12 Pro). If you select the 3x mode, and do not pinch-to-zoom at all, then I think you're getting "optical zoom"...that is, shooting through the 3x lens. But if you fine-tune it from there, going for 2.5x, then you're involving digital zoom. I guess with that nomenclature, there is no "optical zoom" on the smartphone, but rather "optical telephoto".

That it achieves 3x by way of a combination of lenses...that's beyond my ken. But my zoom lens on my DSLR is just that: it's a lens where the glass elements can be moved in relation to each other to create various focal lengths and arbitrary multipliers via purely optical means. That is NOT what is happening on the phone.

Pursuant to the story itself...I'm exactly one of those users for whom the 13 (or mini) is plenty enough...EXCEPT I would love that telephoto. I'm interested in leaving my DSLR behind more often, and having my phone take up more of my photography. I use a zoom lens almost all the time. I would love to have that telephoto lens. All the rest is extra stuff that I will probably not even use or notice. That's why it's a difficult choice: I want that ONE THING but to get it I have to pay for ALL THE THINGS, lol (and not just pay in terms of dollars, but in terms of size and weight). The story even says it, though does not expand on it: that most users would use the telephoto lens and none of the other stuff.

I’ve had one Midnight Blue Apple leather case that was absolutely gorgeous for my Jet Black iPhone 7+. I didn’t enjoy the feel of it honestly for day-to-day use and drop tests have shown it doesn’t offer the same protection of the silicone cases. I’ve probably had over three Apple silicone cases and the newest models are definitely improved. They can get scuffed up and fall apart with drops. I have heard a rumor or on second thought from an Apple Store employee that Apple warrantied them so they will swap the silicone cases out at an Apple Store if they get damaged. Not sure if that policy/warranty still exists.

I'm interested to know how the battery life compares to the 11 Pro. That's one of the reasons I didn't upgrade to the 12 Pro. I don't see enough new features to warrant an upgrade to the 13 Pro though.

Maybe I'm just boring, but I couldn't find a reason to order anything higher than a base model mini.

That's what I did last year. I liked it at first then found the battery life was rather poor as I used the phone far more than I expected to and the screen really was a bit too small. I've traded it in for a 13 Pro.

That's not how this works at all. Phone costs haven't really changed. The "flagship" phones were cheaper back in the day because the cost of them was subsidized by carriers. You sign up for a contract at higher rates - you get a subsidized flagship phone. Since phone plans have gone down drastically over the the last 5+ years, carriers are no longer subsidizing the cost of phones, which is the price you're seeing now.

Also, nothing's being "obfuscated". You're given a price - $999. They're just giving you more than 1 option to pay for it (interest free as well). Sounds like just looking for reasons to complain.

I’m a long time Pro max user, just getting tired of the weight of the Pro max and I’m not going to pay for the features I don’t really use. So this year I just pre ordered the 13

I liked the new blue at first, in the Apple marketing shots it has a silvery-blue look. Reminded me of my Suzuka Blue Honda S2000. But in this pic it looks pretty dull. Nice try but a miss for me.

> It [the Pro] is also able to digitally zoom in ten times further than the ‌iPhone 13‌.

A bit misleading, since that reads as 50x zoom compared to 5x in the base model, when the Pro only has 15x in reality. This is 3x better (due to the 3x optical zoom which the non-Pro is lacking).

I appreciate pro’s advanced camera for daily kids and family shots as I completely ditched the idea of compact mirrorless camera. With that much budget for something like fujifilm im getting a pro. Can live without a camera for another year. My hands are already busy with a phone and kids. Don’t want to add a camera.

I wish they’d stuck with Pacific Blue for the Pro. Why Apple has such a love affair with washed out pastels continues to confuse me.

I opted for the iPhone 12 last year over the 12 Pro and to be honest if I was in the market for a phone this year I’d definitely go for the 13. The differences the Pro offers just isn’t worth the extra £200 for me personally. The 13 is a decent phone and offers enough of the important features for it to be an easy decision IMHO. It all depends on what the individual values in a phone

I agree. I bet once all is said and done the iPhone 13 will end up with the better battery life (never believe apples disclaimers on battery life and we all know promotion will effect the pros in its first generation on a actual iPhone….. battery life wise) and less overheating and won’t be placed on the discontinued list next year like last years pros. They also have the better assortment of colors and the right price for a iPhone. There is no issues with any cameras since the iPhone 11. A pro model is not worth it until a complete redesign is done and it’s given at least 8 gb ram. Therefore a 128 gb base iPhone 13 with colors like pink, starlight or black is a sweet deal. The pro lovers would have loved a starlight, pink, or black color surely.

Therefore, due to good reasoning and really nothing much to pay at all I chose the iPhone 13 to replace my none discontinued iPhone 12.

The feature I’m most curious about is 120hz screens. I’m not expecting much at all. Despite having or wanting the finest visual quality from stuff I barely notice in real time. For example in video games on PS5, I play COD with my kid sometimes. We out the screen on 120hz and res to 1080p and the difference whilst present is so subtle to me. So that’s the feature I’m curious to see if it makes a difference in real world.
From what I’ve heard, apple uses 120hz input already on their 60hz screens which is why they feel so smooth anyway.

I preordered a 13 ProMax (512GB, Graphite, VzW). This’ll be my first ever 5G device. There’s a good chance I’ll upgrade again next year, should Apple give us TouchID again.

It’s not awe-inspiring. But it is enough of an improvement, to upgrade from my current 11 PM. I plan on holding onto that device, as a backup.

What antiquated workflow are you doing to need a hardwired connection to your phone?
I would really appreciate if there's cable connection to a computer that allows for fast transfer. This is something Android has since forever.

Obviously Apple is targeting professionals who have appreciates having those cameras on the iPhones. Those iPhones record videos that take up a lot of storage space.

AirDrop is just too slow to transfer large amount of videos. And you can't do anything during the file transfer because there's a chance, no matter how small, that the file transfer will fail. And when file transfer fails, you could be left with files that you cannot delete until you restart you phone. If not, great, just transfer again and this time don't do anything. Whenever I have to transfer my videos out from the iPhone, my mind goes "Apple is retarded".

I recently tried to AirDrop some file with small size (can't remember the file format) and it failed consistently with re-tries.

Many professionals would prefer a better port for faster connection, or just for the reliability.
