Why did iPhone prices rise in EU countries? is it because of import tariffs? Or because of the declining Euro (relative to the dollar)? Or, is apple being petty and raising prices to pay for EU fines/regulations (USB-c, etc)?
Well, the currency situation is at least the bulk of the issue. The Euro and US dollar are now at par, and that's remarkable IMO. In fact, technically, the Euro is actually worth slightly less than the USD now. In previous years, that would have seemed to be almost an impossibility.

Last year at this time of the year, the Euro was worth almost 20% more than the USD.
Ten years ago, the Euro was worth almost 30% more than the USD.

True, very true. But just because Apple doesn't prioritize it in its marketing materials (for iPhone, they tell you RAM size for iPad and Mac) doesn't mean there isn't a contingent of prospective purchasers (such as myself) that are intensely interested in the RAM stats.
They only began posting RAM stats for the iPad when the M1 version was released. The RAM stats are useful, but I’m not sure “intensely interested” is how most purchasers feel.

My rule is to replace my phone when it doubles the RAM amount:

- My first iPhone was an 2010 iPhone 4 (512 MB RAM)
- My second iPhone was an 2012 iPhone 5 (1 GB RAM)
- My third iPhone was the 2015 iPhone 6s Plus (2 GB RAM)
- My fourth iPhone is, currently, a 2019 iPhone 11 Pro Max (4 GB RAM)
- My next iPhone will be the first with 8 GB of RAM (probably, the iPhone 15 Pro Max)

Because of the amount, maybe 'my' rule will be obsolete by the next cycle, so I will change it. But for now it's okay as a perfect indicator when I should upgrade my phone.

Cheers!

The declining Euro. Just to add, Apple has raised prices in most countries outside the USA due to declining value of currencies.

I generally do something similar, but it also depends on time passed and feature set.

iPhone 3G (128 MB)
iPhone 4 (512 MB)
Android phone
iPhone 5S (1 GB)
iPhone 7 Plus (3 GB)
iPhone 12 Pro Max (6 GB)
...and waiting for 2024 iPhone 16 Pro Max, with 8 GB RAM and USB-C

iPad 2 (512 MB)
iPad Air 2 (2 GB)
iPad Pro 10.5 (4 GB)
...and waiting for 2024 iPad Air/Pro, with 8 / 12 GB RAM (?) and OLED

Yeah, and in countries like Canada where the currency value has not declined, the pricing has stayed the same.

3 GBs of RAM in the iPhone X and I haven’t felt like the phone is struggling. Amazing to think at one point having 128 MBs of RAM in a phone was just astounding. Now it seems like 3 GBs is cutting it short. I don’t expect Apple to bump the iPhone to 8 GBs until all their notebooks and desktops have 16 GB standard.

I see the iPad likely standardizing on 8 GB across the Air and Pro lineup regardless of storage.
I remember when 4MB in PC was top tier. And you were a god if you had an HDD.

iPhone 12 does not have 120 Hz. Or is that what you meant?

Anyhow, I have 120 Hz ProMotion on my iPad Pro. I can most definitely see the difference, but honestly I don't care.

Maybe it'd be nice for 24 Hz video content, but I don't watch a lot of video on my iPad Pro (except on vacation), partially because it's not OLED.

But yes, the iPhone 14 Pro/Max have ProMotion.
I don’t watch a lot of video on my ipad pro (12.9”), but when I have, I’ve been really impressed with the depth, contrast, color, pure blacks, and fine gradations of color using the Mini-LED tech. It’s convinced me (nearly) tht my next TV should be Mini-LED rather than OLED. 120Hz is very smooth and is noticeable when scrolling, I think.

It's a huge benefit. People saying they don't notice the difference have to be blind

For me it’s almost a problem because I don’t overtly notice it on my 13 Pro anymore, but I immediately notice the lack of it on every other device. All iPhones and iPads without it now look to me like low framerate stop motion animation.

As someone upgrading from a 12 Pro Max to a 14 Pro Max, one of my only disappointments (before having it in hand, at least) is the lack of a ram bump for me this year. So I hope the ram speed increase at least pans out to be true, to help mitigate that downside at least a little.
