So personally, I am moving back to apple after 6 years of being on Samsung Phones, moving back for 3 main reasons, the S22 design really turned me away from Samsung with the S-Pen being included in the device, the second in that the rumor this being the last device with a lightning port, the 3rd being I wanna see where apple has gone with there devices, see if they have gotten better since my last iPhone a 6S, this is gonna be a full ecosystem move as well as I'm planning to pick up a Watch 8 and hopefully AirPod Pros 2

I also had a Flip3 only used it for about 6 months then actively got tired of it an moved back to the S21 I had

My not-phone-fussy wife is looking forward to getting my 11Pro as a hand-me-down, so I have no choice but to upgrade. Happy wife, happy life, right? ;)

Genuinely excited as it'll be my first Pro iPhone.
After that I'll skip gen 15 for sure, as I already had to save a lot for the upcoming 14PRO.

The only reason I'm switching is the telephoto camera (I often miss it while I'm shooting video) and the prores recording.
Other than that, I'd be perfectly happy with my current 13 regular.
I made the jump from my DSLR to doing a most of my client photography and video with my 11Pro. The quality suffers a bit, but the convenience more than makes up for it, and my clients don't notice the difference anyway once it goes on the web. That said, I'm really looking forward to seeing what the 14's rumored larger sensor will do.

How are they going to hype it this time around?

12 to 13 was rather minor. From the rumours, 14 isn’t that big of a leap (other than perhaps the Pro model).
For those using their iPhone Pros for professional use, the larger sensor and image detail might be a big leap. I'm hoping so, anyway.

Both of my 2013 27" Thunderbolt 2 monitors and the 2013 Mac Pro 128GB/2TB SSD are being retired to the grand kids. Nine years is a good run.

The two new Apple Studio Displays are here and the Mac Studio Ultra 128GB/8TB SSD will be here 11 October. These are long term purchases.

There will be an iPhone 14 Pro Max with max storage ordered ASAP. My wife gets my model 13 and her 12 goes to one of her daughters.....on down the line. This has been an annual event.

If there is significant change from my S7 aluminum iWatch to the S8 models, there could be an acquisition there. Have upgraded annually since the first V3 I bought.

The Apple "TAX" will easily pay the dividend on my shares of Apple stock.

I think it’s safe to say it’s ‘a few weeks away’ judging by the fact an iPhone is launched in September or October every year. It’s a safe bet I think.
If we go by Apple’s ordinary yearly timetable, it seems reasonable.

However, this year there may well be supply constraints and other issues caused by disruptions in the global economy due to COVID, the war in the Ukraine and other factors. Also, iOS 16 should have ideally been ready to be installed on the devices that are supposed to be shipped, although I suppose Apple might just ship them with the existing iOS. I would be a little surprised if Apple did, though. There also have been no press announcements from Apple yet. It just doesn’t feel like things will coalesce in a matter of a few weeks from now, although I could be wrong.

I don’t think the covid excuse can be used this year after 2020 and 2021 not really having delays in launch due to it. The war in Ukraine perhaps but I doubt it when comparing other electronics and their lack of issues because of it. I think Apple are big enough to have factored around that for this year as they’ve had plenty of warning too. I think we’ll see a September/October launch as usual.

I’m not sure if COVID pandemic was an “excuse,” in that it has caused legitimate and very real obstacles for the supply chain, much as a natural disaster might have. It’s one of those things that no manufacturer could have accurately predicted and dealt with. Apple also has to deal with some thorny issues when it comes to pricing in the global market now, as the dollar is strong against many currencies and these regional differences need to be factored in. Whatever the case, we shall see whether a September launch will happen this year.

I understand the difficulties caused by the pandemic, but my point was we still had iPhones launched in September/October regardless. Those difficulties were overcome behind the scenes and that was at a time when chip factories had been closed for months.

The pricing is a different story and will be a major factor for many people. In Europe we’ve got energy bills literally quadrupling and are about to find ourselves in a recession by November. Further price hikes for Apple with the iPhone will surely cause issues at a consumer level in one of their biggest markets. I’d be interested to see how they structure the prices on release. I know fans on here seem to think Apple products are immune to being affected by an economic crisis but we all know it’s the common man that buys these products after all.

Quadrupled energy bills in Europe? Yikes. I think a lot of consumers in that situation will think twice about upgrading their phones at this time if they don't need to.

Our energy bills are triple at the moment and set to rise in October and January again. The average household was paying around £1k a year but this is set to rise to £4200 in January due to price caps being removed by the regulators. It’s a huge worry at the moment and not going down too well as certain operators are recording £9b profits. So many consumer products will be less desirable very soon and I have no doubt mobile phone upgrades will be hit to some extent. I am planning to upgrade as I have the money to do so, but if my circumstances change in the next couple of months I may reevaluate that as I’m sure my iPhone 12 will be good enough for another year at least.

How's the battery life on your iPhone 12 holding up? I was told once by a mobile phone sales rep that the iPhone 12 series has been notoriously bad in terms of battery life, so he was quite reluctant to recommend them to me.

I agree.
I'm a motion designer and with the convenience of a smartphone I captured lots of interesting scenes I'd have never been able to with a bulky camera.
Of course the quality cannot be compared, however recent iphones have made enormous progress; nowadays if you record 10-bit prores video with a logv3 profile in Filmic Pro, you can get incredible results!

Oh, and having a premium smartphone on the side is a great bonus ;)

It’s currently on 86% in terms of health, but I am charging it early evening most nights as the phone is dying. It is the worst iPhone I’ve owned for battery life I must admit. I had an 8+ before for over 2 years and was 89% by the time I sold it. I hope the 13 and 14 had/have better batteries. I noticed the poor battery life at around the year mark and if I keep it, I will have to get a replacement I think.

I had a prosumer Nikon DSLR and the iPhone image quality is almost as good. The iphone follow-focus and image stabilization are waaaay better. As the phones just get better I don't see myself going back unless I get into higher end cinema level work. But that's a big investment and learning curve. I'm probably too lazy for that.

Considering I had a photographic background (as a hobby), the only thing I really miss is the perspective and depth of field of a full-frame sensor.
I guess you can't have everything.

The 13 does offer improved battery life, apparently. (Incidentally, my Mom owns one, and hasn't complained about battery life yet—anecdotal evidence, granted 😝) I think that battery life was one of the things that Apple tried to address with the iPhone 13.

The battery for some hardware (and Apple is no exception) just seems to be mismatched with the performance that the device offers.

"If you currently have an iPhone 13, you're probably not considering jumping to the iPhone 14. An upgrade may seem more appealing if you're rocking an older iPhone."

I would have expected to see this in an article in Forbes or somewhere like that. I think MacRumors readers are more likely to upgrade more often.

Better wait for 2023.
USB-C, probably periscope lens…

Always on screen is nice and I’m waiting for Apple fanboys praising this as a groundbreaking feature that totally changes their daily life routine - after they’ve called it unnecessary for many years, but ok.
Nope. I have it, and AOD is still pretty useless.

The way apple implemented it is pretty average in the current state. It’s simply a dimmed homescreen. No further options to customise it or do any further useful things with it.
Compared to the first AoD by Samsung on the Galaxy s7 from 2016(!!!) it’s relatively poor.
