But still uses the horrible useless lightning port. So crazy stupid. USB-C would have made wonders. Sad.
Yes having a different shaped port to charge it would be so awesome. You know because USB-C charges so much better 🤦‍♂️

Less durable than lighting?????? No way, no how, lighting is terrible reliability-wise. And yes, I have several USB-c devices and haven't had a problem with a connector yet.
Lightning is so terrible reliability wise?… Are you feeding the cables to your dog or something? I’ve been using it since the iPhone 5 and had the lightning plug only once because it was plugged in to a battery pack while in my pocket the prong bent on the cable. It didn’t damage the port on the iPhone but just the prong on the cable bent

No, just the extended family. (I'm the tech geek in the family). And I have to work on people's iphone and ipad connectors more than any other device that my family owns. They're always getting mucked up or broken.

I haven't worked on one since about a month ago. Most of the time the problem is on the device side, not the cable and they mainly just get dirty enough not to work. Most of them can be resurrected by a good cleaning, but I've also had the connector totally die in 3 iPads.

The USB-c connection is a much more sturdy connection and I've never had one that failed. (yet, of course). It's also quite a bit faster than a lightening connection.

I switched from my iPhone 13 mini to my Flip4 (USB-C natch) for the connection in my car -- it's SO much more stable than the lightning connection where it drops out with any decent sized pot hole.

I really hate lightening, so I'd certainly welcome a change!

Maybe you live in a dusty part of the world? What are you getting in the lightning port that’s messing it up? I live in the USA and never have connection issues with the lightning connector. I’m not an office worker so I don’t live and work in a dust free environment. Eventually my cables will short out where the wire connects to the plug but I have this problem with all cables not just lightning.

If you’re getting dirt or sand in the connector port I don’t see how to USB-C is going to work better with that. Maybe it does? I have devices with both style of connections and never really have an issue with either.

As to speed I think that’s one part where USB-C is going to be superior. If you’re using your iPhone to take a lot of videos then you need a faster transfer with a cable. My understanding is the lightning port could increase in speed but for some reason it’s not. I don’t take videos with my phone so for me it’s not important.

Either way USB-C is going to be the connection for the iPhone 15. Just like when Apple switched it last time there was a lot of people upset about having to buy new cables but I think this time there’s going to be also a lot of people happy about the change. I’m sort of neutral in the sense of I’m not going to be happy about having a bunch of cables I can’t use but on the other hand I’ll just buy new cables so it’s not a big deal for me.

Actually the opposite, high humidity, though pollen and mold are a problem too.

It's unidentifiable. The worst "dirt" gets on the side rail edges which makes it hard to get a good connection between the contacts on both sides.

If you’re getting dirt or sand in the connector port I don’t see how to USB-C is going to work better with that.

Well, I haven't had a failure yet with USBC. I also have an android phone and an android tablet. There's also a couple other android tablets in the family. It might just be time, but I can tell you the USBC doesn't have the side rails on the outside of the connector, and the connectors fit more snugly.

Note I'm not talking able cable failure on either USBC or Lightning, but connector failures...

Maybe, but I'll be happy with the change if it happens. But I'm probably going to buy a 14 Pro, so wont be ready to upgrade next year. Not that it hasn't stopped me before if a new feature I really want comes out. :)

As for the speed, I really don't need it that much, but backups are pretty slow on an iphone when using a cable...

Yeah I can relate to that. With the trade-in Apple gives you it’s not too bad.

I haven’t connected my iPhone to a computer since I think my iPhone 5. There’s nothing on my phone that can’t go on the cloud and I don’t trust myself to do it frequently. I understand some people have security situations that require local back up instead and it’s a pain.

So improve Lighting’s transfer speeds without changing the connector.

I'm sure there is a way, but initially my hunch is it would require more pins than Lightning has for faster transfer speeds. But perhaps not because the original iPad Pro offered a USB 3 camera connection kit.

I'm not sure why we are so infatuated with Lightning though. USB-C is a nonproprietary universal standard - replacement cables are cheap and readily available, and it natively supports USB 4 speeds without needing any retrofitting.

I’ve been buying iPhones every other year since 2008, and so has my wife and daughter. I’ve also been buying iPads since 2010 every year, with my wife and daughter usually buying every other year. While cables have come and gone, we’ve never had a single port on the devices themselves go bad, and I don’t know anyone who has. The Lightning port is known for its robustness, more so than the USB C port which it notable in its flimsiness. If you say your family is constantly breaking their device ports, then you should teach then to not pull their devices by the cord.

Lucky you, and I wish I could say the same, but I'd be lying if I did.

And I said I wasn't talking about cord failures, it's the actual port on the device.

Are people really claiming the 14 is a good upgrade over the 13? I mean, really?! Is it mostly Apple shareholders in here or something?
Yea. It’s amazing how they tried to sell you old parts as new. The only improvement is additional GPU core, a bit more battery life, and camera from 13 pro (still dual cameras though, not three). Sure they have that satellite thing but 99.99% of people here won’t benefit from it.

That’s the point. Cord failures, yes. Port failures, no. Very unusual. It’s tough to damage a lightning port.

The ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max lasts for up to 29 hours when watching videos (up from 28 hours), up to 25 hours for streaming video (no improvement), and up to 95 hours for audio playback (no improvement).

Not as much improvement as I expected there given the more efficient A16 SoC, the more efficient Qualcomm X65 SoC and LPDDR5 memory (assuming the rumours were correct) and the screen able to clock down to 1Hz. This says to me that a few of the later stage rumours about bigger batteries weren't true and one earlier rumour that the Pro Max battery would actually be slightly smaller than last year might have been correct.

I'm actually a bit disappointed, with all the rumours I was hoping that the headline numbers would show a bigger year-on-year increase. I wonder how much difference in real-life battery life (as opposed to artificial test cases) turning off AOD will make plus, if Apple have implemented the screen refresh adjustments such that it can automatically detect that something like Kindle or a news app is displaying mostly static content and can drop the refresh rate right down to 1Hz, that would probably make a huge difference for my use patterns. I'm planning to upgrade today anyway so I'll find out soon enough I suppose.

Cord failures wasn't *my* point, nor my complaint with lightening. My experience is different, ports fail outright, and they get dirty so no good contact and you have to clean them.

The cords are just cheapies and they fail occasionally, as does just about any other kind of cable.
