I suspect the 14 and 14 Plus combined will significantly outsell the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max combined. The people here at MacRumors in my iPhone 14 series sales poll seem to disagree, but I wouldn't be surprised if the 14 Plus turns out to be #1 bestseller. And if not #1, then #2.
My guess would be the same. And it being #1 would depend more on the carrier promotions than anything else.

Here in the states, people (generally, the vast majority) buy based on monthly pricing through their carriers. Carriers will always offer the base models for free, but charge additional for the Pro models. So it would boil down to the question, "Do you want a 14 Plus for free, or pay $15 a month for a 14 Pro Max?"

Since the phone didn't launch at the same time as the other three models, and the only metric for "success" were preorders, made sense the majority of sales were for Pro models. People with their fingers on the pulse of the tech world always go for the latest & greatest.

But the masses only go by what's in front of them at retail.

As mentioned, the 13 Pro Max has been discontinued. This "sane" choice isn't much help in say January 2023 when there is no stock.
That may be the case in the US. At least here in Germany you can still buy the 12 Pro (incl. Max) new and sealed from some retailers. So I guess it will be no problem at all to buy a 13 Pro (/Max) for another year at least.

I suspect this will do well in the long run, because most people (not all) seem to want the biggest screen they can get. The standard iPhone line is for people who will still upgrade their phone in August, despite the imminent arrival of new iPhones.

no doubt it will be praised out the gate i think for battery life. Will likely be the battery champion by some distance at a guess.

Fact: I am confused about Apples iPhone release and shipping policy. Why not release and ship all models at the same time.

They say it was FCC certification, but wouldn't put it past Apple anymore to grease the FCC to purposely delay so it didn't eat PM sales. I want to see what happens with the PM orders still deeply backordered and non existent in store once the Plus launches. Want to see how in store stock looks starting Friday

Yeah until the Pro Max was announced which has longer battery life according to Apple's website.
No. 14 Plus has longer general battery life. Check the audio battery life. That is more realistic as a surrogate for standby as opposed to video playback.

Also Apple didn’t claim the Pro Max had more battery life in the keynote.

If you want to play mental gymnastics to try and be right, go ahead. But 29 hours of video playback on the 14 PM compared to 26 hours of video playback on the 14 Plus is significant enough to matter.

Audio playback refers to when the phone is just playing audio and the screen is off. One of the worst ways to measure battery life of a phone. Video playback is far more important.

Tell that to Tim Cook, who is the one that said the 14 Plus is the iPhone with the longest battery life ever made.

Apple's iPhone 14 Plus, its latest 6.7-inch non-Pro iPhone, officially launches this Friday, October 7, and Apple's website is currently showing shipping delays into next week for all models and configurations.

Apple's U.S. order page now gives delivery estimates between Tuesday, October 11 and Thursday, October 13 for iPhone 14 Plus models in Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight, and PRODUCT(RED) colors with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage capacities.

The launch of the iPhone 14 Plus comes three weeks after the other models in the iPhone 14 family became available, and a full four weeks since pre-orders began.

The shipping delay is in stark contrast to a check we made one week after pre-orders opened, when there was no delay for any iPhone 14 Plus model. At the time, delivery estimates for the ‌iPhone 14‌, iPhone 14 Pro, and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max were delayed by days and in some cases weeks.

The ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus is meant for customers who want a larger ‌iPhone‌ without all the features of Apple's high-end models, but demand for the new model has not reached the highs that Apple anticipated.

On the Monday following the start of pre-orders, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the iPhone 14 and ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus had seen "lackluster" pre-order results that were worse than those for the third-generation iPhone SE and the ‌iPhone 13‌ mini, indicating that Apple's positioning of the two new standard models may have failed.

In response to the poorer-than-expected demand, Apple is said to have asked assembly partners to transfer some iPhone 14 production capacity to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the latter of which has reportedly seen the highest demand so far.

There have also been reports that Apple has shelved plans to increase production of the two devices. On the other hand, the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max continue to see high demand.

Both non-Pro iPhone 14 models have also already depreciated in value more than twice as much as the iPhone 13 in the same time frame last year, according to one report.

The ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus, like the ‌iPhone 14‌, features the same chip as the iPhone 13 Pro, camera improvements, and other minor enhancements. Reviewers called the iPhone 14 an "iPhone 13S," noting the little improvements and changes compared to its predecessor.

I just received mine on the east coast of the US and its updating now!

I don’t think Apple did that. From what I can tell they just submitted the application for certification later than they submitted the other phones. Shows it was submitted on Aug 22nd.

FCC IDs posted by Phone Scoop:
I just got mine like an hour ago and I had preordered it - from what i can tell, i'm one of the earlier ones to receive it.
This article is about the 14 Plus. It doesn’t launch until Oct 7th. How did you get it early? Are you a reviewer getting a review unit?

Did the FCC approve it early?
It was approved on Sept 22nd according to Phone Scoop.

The 14 Max will end up being the 13 Mini. It'll be a flop.

Apple has too many iPhone models that don't have enough differentiation between them.

Apple should ditch the whole "pro" thing. Go with one iPhone model in either the regular size or the "Max" size.

Two models with color options, that's it. The whole product line has gotten to unwieldly.

These reports are dumb.

It just means supply didn’t mean demand and that’s it!

Supply could have been 10 with 11 orders or supply could have been 10 million with 11 million orders.

Who knows? We don’t.

Supply chain issues are still a problem in China, which still has CoV lockdowns.
Also, Apple makes more money selling the Pro versions so it would want to sell those versions first.

As others here have said, I’d expect the 14 Pro to do better in pre-orders, but the 14 to outsell the Pro in the long run. Pre-orders are heavy in tech fans, who are also most likely to pony up for the latest and greatest, whereas the majority of customers will just wander in throughout the year when they break/lose/finally tire of/pass to family their current phone. (And if not for auto-update, that outgoing phone would still be running the OS it came out of the box with…)

I think it will sell as carriers most likely to push offers on it.
The current US pricing from Apple is $200 less than the 14 Pro Max, which can be a deal breaker not to get the Pro but the price itself is not cheap in any means.

First off, we know it was linked that Apple didn’t change the name to 14+ until the last minute. Could that have affected FCC certification if it didn’t have a solid name?

Secondly, I think demand is picking up because some people are realizing just how heavy the pro max is. It’s basically 20% heavier. And to be honest, I’ve never heard anybody get excited about a stainless steel. iPhone, except reviewers online. Aluminum is much better for a device that most will use less than two years.
