One thing I'm wondering about:

Will it have "pocket detection" to shut down the display entirely when stores in a pocket, bag, or car console for an extended period of time? I can see wanting it on when sitting on my desk, visible in the open, but would prefer the battery gains (even if they're minimal) from having it shut down entirely overnight, or when it's in my pocket.

You don't want "always on" but "only on in certain circumstances".

Not to be a misery guts, but I’ll be turning that off as soon as I get the phone.
Yeah, I don't get it either...
Don't get me wrong it looks sleek and polished, but I'd rather save the most battery I can and just tap the phone when I need to check the time.
Also, having a mac too, most of my notifications are delivered on my computer.

And for me, that sounds awful. I don't mean to say there is anything wrong with it, but rather to point out that we all use our phones and computers differently. And it's good to have options for features like notifications on your MacBook or AOD for our phones. Those that like them can use them, and those that don't can turn them off.

Doesn't exactly have the same ring to it...

I assume that the next thing you are going to tell us is that the dynamic island isn't literally an island.

When I need to focus there's focus mode.
Anyway I'm not against the introduction of rhe feature; I just think its usefulness is a little overestimated perhaps

Reading these comments made me realize how many iPhone users seem to think there’s only one useful way to use a phone. Lack of customization surely crippled the imaginations of many ios users.

Like others have said, AOD is where only important info like time and/or date and notifications are shown, and the rest of the screen is off to conserve battery. Keeping the wallpaper lit up, along with having no notifications isn’t even AOD, Apple is full of it, and this really has me thinking they are out of touch. In reality it should have always been called pod, for partially on display, leave it to Apple to think it meant that the entire screen is just lit up all the time and nothing else.

The funniest part about is that you don’t even need an iPhone 14 “pro” to do what Apple is calling aod. All you need to do is turn your Brightness down all the way and auto lock to never and boom, instant “always on display”.

And I thought Apple was gonna actually make a cool and customizable aod and we didn’t get it.

I hope the AoD stays on all the time when on charge. At bed time, I'll be setting a blank wallpaper, no widgets apart from the clock and putting it on my wireless charging dock next to my bed. Suitably dim for night use.

I ditched my alarm clock when I got my Pixel phone a few years ago.

One of the reasons I'm getting the Pro.

I guess as an alarm clock, it might be useful. But since I almost always have my phone in my pocket, the display automatically comes on when I pull out the phone anyway. And the display lights up if a notification comes in. So I’m not sure what the use case is for an always-on display.
I use my phone as a timer frequently and would like to be able to time left without touching it. Same when I’m in the shower and leave it on the counter. Would be nice to see what time it is. It’s actually the feature that made me upgrade. Without that it would have been a pass.

I had the same question, and many were quick to point out that some documentation suggests that the AOD will turn off when the phone is face down, in a pocket, or in sleep focus mode. So "always-on" really means "usually on."
Wonder if there will be a way to set sleep focus to only the time. That's the only thing I would care to see if I woke up in the middle of the night.

You can "Hey Siri" on the cheaper phones, like my 11.

"Timer" rounds down to the nearest minute; I can't find a way to get it to announce to the nearest second.

Hopefully we can actually turn it all the way off. Don’t need a nightlight while sleeping.
That was my thought too. I like how I can set the AOD on my Android to extra dim and use it as a bedside clock. Hopefully there will be some customization in that regard.

I didn’t like this initially as well. I saw a few videos and suspect maybe in person it’ll look much better than in photos and videos. The dimmed background might be darker and text brighter in person

Yes, running an always on display at night seems to be of marginal benefit.
And none to me, since I place my phone face down at night.
And similar to some other comments -- my usage scenarios just don't need a display to be always on.
So hoping that Apple allows it to be user-set, so only running in always-on mode during times when it will be useful to the user. (as if the user might know best for themselves).
Won't know till folks and review sites get actual iPhone 14Pros and run through the various settings.

I like to think the AOD will be linked to Focus modes and hence background screens. So you'd shimply turn on or schedule a Focus mode to activate/deactivate the AOD.

Maybe that'll come with iOS 17.

Although I don't have any use-case for AOD, and I'm skipping the 14 as my iPhone 11's still going strong, I'll probably get the iPhone 15 next year and I think AOD could be cool to have.

What about burn in? Also that 2000nits for outdoor use, how long does it take to dim it down due to overheating?
Before airing for it to overheat why not set your display timeout to 30 seconds to lock?

No chance for buen in. Plus increase battery life throughout your day. You’d be amazed how many people regardless of smartphone is just don’t lock their screen when not in use.

There is a matter on phones with FaceID that when manually locking the screen while looking at it will rapidly unlock before your turn your phone to place in your pocket (or purse) lol.

sorry if this has been asked before, but will AOD work in landscape mode? will it turn? Thanks
