I'm curious as to the reasoning for this feature. I can't seem to figure out why anyone would want this. Is it simply so you can just look at your phone without touching it? How hard is a double tap on the screen to wake it for a few seconds or lift it? Basically we are going from the user requesting the phone to be visible to the phone dictating when it is visible itself. So now everyone with these models will be in locations with their phones lit up simply because it never turns off? Seems incredibly annoying in my mind.
As a former iPhone user who now uses an Android phone with an OLED display, I make use of AOD all the time. When my phone is lying face up, I can see at a glance the time and any notifications, including announcement of arrival of SMS and other messages as well as charge level. I have it set to go off at bedtime and on again in the morning.

I understand that everyone has their own circumstances and requirements but AOD is one feature that I wouldn’t want to be without. In fact, it’s been a factor in me not moving back to iPhone thus far.

I tried to use it, but I found myself looking at my phone way more often for no reason, and I kept thinking that I didn’t lock it correctly. I can see how it might be useful for some people, but I couldn’t get used to it. I don’t use it on my watch either.

Have been wanting AOD on the iPhone since s7 days, so yeah great upgrade

The rumors before indicated that they'll do pixel shifting to avoid this. Most likely it will be the same as on the Apple Watch, which did not suffer from burn in from what I experienced.
Think maybe they meant heat throttling

I don't really grok this. Do we really think Apple has designed this such that it's bright enough to bother people at night?

My watch -- which essentially has the same feature -- is not bright enough to bother anyone.
Seems some are like my wife and the littlest light wakes her up. I can sleep through light fixtures at full brightness
