No. If Apple gives the option to show just the time and no wallpaper in the future I may turn it on. I find it to be confusing design to show the wallpaper as it makes me think my phone is awake when it’s not, and also just plain looks bad for most wallpapers I tried.

I used the coconutBattery app on my Mac to read exact battery levels and measure the amount of drain AOD causes.

On my 14 Pro Max:

AOD on, solid black background, no widgets: 56mAh or 1.30% per hour drain
AOD off: 40mAh or 0.93% per hour drain

Total additional drain per day with AOD on: 4.1%

Personally, I average 6.5 hours of sleep, 5.66 hours of screen active time, and a small amount of time with the phone in my pocket, so AOD will be on for about 11 hours per day for me, which works out to 4.1% extra drain per day compared to AOD off. Totally worth that amount of drain in my opinion, and this is probably why some are saying they don't notice any extra drain... 4.1% in a day would be very hard to notice.

Next I'll have to try the same test with a photo or live background and 4 widgets to see how much worse that is.

AOD display currently on. No noticeable drain (coming from an 11 Pro). I think the amount of battery drain is equivalent to me often checking my phone manually for time/notification, which is something battery drain tests doesn't factor. Granted my watch can do the same thing, but when my phone is on my work desk, I can easily glance without having to reach my phone or motion to my watch.

something is fishy lol
some say does drain some not, so who's the (fibbers?)
I don't quite understand their position at all, tbh.

The display is drawing some level of power. An argument can be made that it's minimal to them,
but to say it doesn't draw any power? the 14 Pro/Pro Max doesn't use solar power for back up.

Nobody in this thread said it doesn’t draw any power.

What I found with AOD is you have to wake the screen and use Face ID to properly see the notifications anyway so I didn’t see the advantage. Even some of the widgets blank out when locked. The only positive I found was a quick glance at the clock!
you can still turn the privacy off to see the notifications on AOD.

well you can use a focus where it will dim the screen and show just the time, widgets with a black screen

Had the 14 Pro only for a week but switched off the AOD after just a day of using the iPhone. There is no advantage in it over the Apple Watch and in my case the battery drain was noticeable.
I might have considered keeping it on if I would not own an Apple Watch.

People stress way too much over the battery charges in general. You are not going to ruin the battery in a year by charging it. These aren't old nickel batteries from the early 2000s. My 13PM is still at 100% battery health, despite being charged literally every night since release.

No argument from me if you don't like the AOD, but this idea of the battery being overcharged is a non-issue.
My 13PM was 92% after 10 months. It significantly lowers price when selling.
So the stress about battery is sometimes useful, especially when you trade iPhones every year for new model

My AOD goes off automatically.
I don’t have sleep mode or battery saver on, don’t have Apple Watch. But still goes off automatically.
I want it on 24/7 how can I do it?

I have to say that I didn't like it at first, but I like it now. Plus it doesn't affect battery at all, so why not using it. I'd be glad if we could customize it a little bit though.

I found one huge advantage over the Apple Watch: The Apple Watch AOD only shows a red dot when you have a notification, whereas the iPhone AOD can be made to show the entire text of the notification.

You can also have it hide that text but you can still see what apps gave you a notification. It's great.

Certainly there were other factors which contributed to that quick decreases besides just regular nightly charging.

Some people just use their devices, and some people obsess over every little detail and every little lost percentage.

I have AOD on but I don't really notice any additional battery drain, but then again I am not looking in to it like that.. I use my phone all day, and pop on the charger when I go to bed at night. simple as that. Whenever I don't want to look at AOD I just put my phone face down at work... also simple.

I don't. Before the announcement I was really diggin' into it, but I was hoping for a traditional AOD, like Android does. Come on, that's the one thing they do well. Black screen, the time, discrete icons for the notifications, and that's all.
For once I really think Apple screwed things up trying to reinvent the wheel.

But since the release, the feature has been hugely criticized by lots of people, and I hope/believe Apple will listen to their users (they do it a lot, recently) and come up with a "stripped" version of the AOD somewhere in the future.

Shut it off the day after I got the phone (release day). I wanted to use it for bed so I could just look up at the time when I randomly wake up at night, but it shuts off so that doesn’t work. Literally don’t have any other want or need for it other than that.

Also, I think they did it wrong. I don’t need or want to see the wallpaper. Simple time date and notifications, maybe widgets.

Updated battery test results:

I used the coconutBattery app on my Mac to read exact battery levels and measure the amount of drain AOD causes. I average 6.5 hours of sleep, 5.66 hours of screen active time, and a small amount of time with the phone in my pocket, so AOD will be on for about 11 hours per day for me, and my per day drain is based on that.

On my 14 Pro Max:

AOD off:
  • 40mAh or 0.93% per hour
AOD on, solid black background, no widgets:
  • 56mAh or 1.30% per hour
  • 0.37% extra drain per hour compared to AOD off
  • 4.1% extra drain per day compared to AOD off (based on 11 hours AOD time)
AOD on, astronomy background, 4 widgets:
  • 70mAh or 1.63% per hour
  • 0.70% extra drain per hour compared to AOD off
  • 7.7% extra drain per day compared to AOD off (based on 11 hours AOD time)
Based on the smaller battery size of the 14 Pro, we can guess that AOD would use more like 5-10% extra battery on that phone under the same circumstances.
