iPhone 14 Pro Case Comparison Shows Wider Diameter of Rear Camera Lenses

I'm 70% convinced that Apple has staggered out these camera improvements to make sure that people buy new cases... It also means any second hand cases can only be used on the model it was meant for and are only relevant for owners of that exact model.

Edited to add: this was partly said in jest - and of course this will just be part of the business plan outlaid by Apple. I'm not criticising the move, I actually think it's genius and well thought-out.
I would not be surprised if making millions of $'s in cases at least plays a role in such decisions.

That’s going to be one hell of a brick. Especially with a case on it. Wonder how much it will differ with the 11 Pro.
I've got an 11Pro and whenever I see and hold a 13 Pro at a store, with its thickness and chunky square sides, I'm considerably less excited to make the jump to the new form factor. The camera bump doesn't bother me so much (I make full use of the iPhone camera tech, even professionally, so the better is, I'm all for it.) but I really prefer the rounded edges overall – better ergonomics and for sliding into pockets and such.

They'd definitely do well at this point to stop cramming it into a 'corner' (or like 1/4 of the 6.1" model lol) and use the entire width of the back to make it more balanced. I feel like it's only the way it is now because earlier iPhones always had their camera in the corner but it just doesn't make sense scaled up this far.

Interesting how ahead of it's time this was, though...

Very good point. Wider aperture will allow shallower depth of field (DOF). Not only will that impact focusing as you observe, but the new shallower DOF will facilitate users seeing/learning the nuances of focus and DOF. IMO over time it will be quite a big deal.
At the tiny sensor size and focal length, the DOF difference will be negligible. Unless you do macro photography, you might not even notice any difference.

Increase the sensor size, then you'll see a noticable difference in DOF.

Absolutely! The camera should be towards the middle of the phone to eliminate 2 of the worst offenders of bad phone photos: 1) thumb in the shot and 2) poor balance. Good balance is essential for steady photos. This is why when I shoot with long lenses, I add the battery grip. The extra few ounces makes the camera a lot easier to hold steady.

They can't center it due to the FaceID array needing that space, and they cant move it down because that would mean a smaller battery. Might be harder to package the guts if they split that space into two smaller spaces.

Looks like a pretty significant increase in aperture. I wonder how this will affect the speed/accuracy of the autofocus. Focusing at f/1.4 is a bit of a different ballgame than focusing at f/2.8

Both the 13 and 13 Pro already use f/1.6 apertures for the main wide angle lens, so not a huge difference if it drops to 1.4. The telephoto lens is a 2.8 equivalent but as another poster mentioned the effect of the increased aperture size isn't as noticeable with smaller sensors as it would be on a full frame or even APS-C. I would also wager that Apple would incorporate a degree of focus stacking into their Smart HDR algorithm to ensure the autofocus behavior and results are consistent as most casual users aren't going to care to have to re-learn for the nuances of a faster lens.

At this rate, if they put promotion on a standard iPhone I might drop down to that when I get a 16/17. Too large. The telephoto camera is garbage from my experience anyways.

Wider diameter does not mean that the sensors are larger. In order to increase the sensor while keeping the equivalent focal length, the camera would have to be thicker unless Apple creates lenses out of a material with a higher refractive index. Diamonds would work, but they are probably too expensive. So do not expect wonders from new cameras! As long as they are not thicker, they can't improve a lot.

I just hope they fix the absolutely awful macro to normal camera switch. It’s ghastly.

It really is bad. Switching it off should mean that it never automatically activates. That should be done in settings. Then, in the Camera app, you can turn it on if you so choose.

Just wondering.. how are those companies able to create the covers already with exact measurements, yet no one is able to create an exact-sized rendering of the iPhone 14 before it is released? If you know the sizes, you could also design a rendering of the iPhone 14 instead of just creating cases?
Apple most likely sends them to case makers so they have cases ready come day one (this could also be not true since we have had wrong cases in the past). I would assume the reason companies don't leak the case sizes is because they want to continue getting them so they are able to have cases available on launch.

Amazing that android can make camera lenses (with more MP and bigger/same-sized sensors) without needing to take up half of the back of the phone. I could see if apple had class-leading photos, but even that has been surpassed recently.

^I find a lot of the "HDR" photos I take (involuntaritly, since you can't shut it off) look ridiculous. Looking back on photos taken with my 11 Pro and even 8 Plus many of the them (especially bright, sunny outdoor scenes) look better.

However, rumors say the 14 Pros will get larger sensors.

Those 14 Pro lenses will look significantly larger than the 13 Pro. Low light performance should get a significant boost.

Just a company maximizing their profit. Do you think they couldn’t have an always-on display ready last year? Of course they could, but since they were already going with promotion, they left that one for the next iteration.
It depends… which phones currently have always-on, 120Hz displays and how many did they sell? While Apple sells fewer phones in total than Android OS phones, they still sell far more phones than most individual vendors. Any cool new tech any Android maker introduces, then, only has to be made a few million times. Apple’s sales requires multiple times that number. If the maker of the panels can’t make that many, then there’s no use in Apple choosing the technology for their phones.

Still reeling about this, bring back Jonny Ive :(
Johnny Ive created the Notch, a protruding lens first and then a camera bump once phones had more than one lens; in fact, under I've the bump would become even thicker so the body could be thinner with worse battery life than we have now.

What exactly do you think Ive would fix?

I had the 12 pro max and I hated that it was too heavy. I dropped it many times cause it see-sawed top down and out of my hand.

Happily using the 13 mini now.
I’m with you there! My 12PM with screen protector and the slimmest case I could find still felt unwieldy and heavy in my hand, this after years of big phones such as the Note 4, 5, 8, and 10+. When I learned the 13PM weighed even more I downsized to a regular 13 Pro. I am wondering how heavy the 14 series will be.

I suppose I could simply use the phone “naked” without any sort of extra protection but, no matter how careful I am, I’ve managed to drop my phones many times over the years.

Last phone I used without a case was the X. Usually I use a case for the first year.

However since the 12 PM and now 13 Mini the flat edge has made me more nervous of damage for some reason.
