From what I see, if you want the biggest possible unobstructed rectangle (say for display of text), this actually gives less space, since the holes are located further down into the display. I don’t see this as a win.

I’m no design student but it really looks counterintuitive, the notch was already the comprise to get Face ID and the camera in the smallest most unobtrusive real estate possible.

At this point and the shortages, wouldn’t it be cheaper just to release two iPhones and keep selling the 13? you know, like back in the day? My guess is, the Pro will increase in price, specially the „Pro Max“
Who else wants to bet that the software will program the pixels in-between the two pills to be jet black at all times?

Sounds like iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Max will be an ideal case for you.
Indeed. The notch seems more subtle to me. The pill looks like a huge dead pixel floating on your screen
Most curious about 14 Max for light weight, price, and a new product line of sorts (non-Pro Max)
I'm less bothered by the notch / pill + hole designs than I am by the ever-increasing narrowness of the screen. I said years ago on here before Sony did it, that we're close to 21:9 abominations, and here we are with iPhone. Who needs such narrow screens? I've never owned a Sony phone but have read comments on how the display is just too narrow for people. Hopefully Apple stops at 20:9.
Its fine and will be a nice change. Wont affect anything I do negatively.
So the iPhone declares the notch to be over just after the MacBook Pro rolls it out? Are these products designed by completely different teams now?
I have a feeling they won’t bring back the battery percentage because there’s not much more space horizontally. And I’m a bit worried that the pill seems to go deeper in terms of vertical space than the current notch, which reminds me of the Pixel 3.
I hope I’m wrong though!
If it’s real, MR will be plagued with posts how much better/worse it is than the awful/indifferent notch.
Meanwhile, it’ll be purchased in droves by older-than-11-era-phone-owners and yearly upgraders who will absolutely-inisist-how-it’s-revolutionised-their-phone-usage….and the rest of us will shrug and say, hmm, nice phone, maybe next year.
How does it not give more screen real estate? Maybe it's not where you'd like the screen real estate but it's definitely more overall screen.
The pill cutout seems like it would be more noticeable than the notch to me.
