Setting the Touch Bar to just be Function keys doesn’t solve the problem that you can’t feel the keys, have to look at them to use them, and have no tactile feedback of when you actuate them.

And as far as I know, you can’t turn off the DI and/or its animations.
These are probably the same people who thought touch buttons where a good on idea on TVs (they're not) and even worse, in cars (one of the dumbest and most dangerous ideas I've seen)
the sad part is, people are making far far more money than I am, to make these garbage design decisions, and someone even higher up letting them go to market. hahahah

They couldn't make it work under the screen so came up with this last minute fix and a big publicity push. You all keep lowering the bar for Apple.
Yah, no one buys Apple products anymore do they

Why is dismissal left-right instead of a swipe off the top? I dismiss my notifications on non-iPhone-14 with an up-swipe all the time. Trying to accurately left-right that thing with a finger is going to result in swiping pages instead of dismissal more often than not.

Dynamic Island on the iPhone is equivalent to the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro. Some will find it cool and a useful feature, others will see it as pointless.
I don't even think it's remotely close to the Touch Bar. The Touch Bar got rid of functionality for a lot of people who used the function keys for programs like Premiere Pro. The dynamic island didn't eliminate or change something so drastically, it's trying to add somethign to the user experience. Making the spot more useful. And I think it is for phone calls. Music is meh, the album artwork is too small to be worth while, but being able to hold down and get quick music information and be able to change tracks is great. I do wish it was just a tap to open that and a hold to open the app though.

This just made me realize how distracting I'd find the Dynamic Island if I bought a 14P.

1st article: "How to turn off the always-on screen on the iPhone 14 Pro as it eats too much battery"
2nd article: "How to turn off the dynamic island on the iPhone 14 Pro as it's too distracting"

Apple's had a real homerun with the Pro this year. Fortunately, the iPhone 14 will sell well. Oh wait!

I'll reserve my full judgement on dynamic island until I actually use it on an iPhone. On paper, it looks like a gimmick, but some gimmicks have been known to grow on me over time.

I would have rather Apple came out with under the screen Touch ID.

The Dynamic Island is a distracting embarrassment of design. Apple designers are truly terrible at this point.

The fact that they added this gesture to remove distracting elements of it is so telling. They literally know how distracting it is…

Just testing this though, it doesn’t work well at all, it’s highly broken, and you have to swipe again after every single time your phone display turns off and comes back on, and every single time something gets added back to the island. When you swipe when music is playing to get rid of the embarrassingly distracting waveform, it literally expands the Dynamic Island lmao!!!

The Dynamic Island should have been designed with SUBTLETY in mind. Instead, it’s exceedingly distracting and near-useless. The Timer literally shows seconds counting down in the island..it’s so stupid I can’t believe it. It’s a large orange font on a black background changing every second. Pure distraction while you’re reading the rest of the screen which is completely static. There should NOT be seconds shown in the Island unless it is the FINAL minute. The only thing the island should show for the Timer is hours and minutes or just the disappearing ring (the most subtlety possible).

The waveform during audio playback is yet another highly distracting and worthless element.

If you have more than 1hr in a Timer, the Dynamic Island pushes the clock off the status bar!!!!! This is because the Timer includes hrs mins and seconds with large font. You would absolutely NEVER remove the clock from the status bar for the dynamic Island…. It’s astronomically more important than anything that could ever be in the dynamic Island.

The status area NEEDS static elements with only black or white text so that there isn’t high contrast and moving elements distracting the user’s attention.

The font should all be white within the Dynamic Island and nothing should move abruptly.

If this is such a “distracting embarrassment of design” to you, Apple offers another model in two sizes with the notch and no DI. I’m sure Samsung will offer you a huge trade in value for your device to switch and not ever have to worry about Apples huge design failures.

Myself and many others love the design. And do you really think Apple isn’t gonna improve on it in the future? Being that this is literally the first time it has been introduced into the UI.

And I assume you’re a design expert, that really needs to take matters into your own hands, by developing your own hardware and software so it can be exactly to your standards.

👊😎👍

Of course I wouldn’t be switching devices when the iPhone 14 Pro is in fact the best smartphone. I’ll simply be dealing with the terrible software design until there is an option to turn it completely off because Apple designers are too inept to design it correctly.

And yes, I’d love to be in charge of iPhone iOS design because I can guarantee you your experience and everyone else’s would be far better if I were.

I think the content of this article perfectly describes the current state of Apple’s OS’s. It’s getting so complex with no logical cues, manuals or explanations for users, that we have to read articles online to figure out basic functionality like this.

The amount of time it takes to explain some (older) people that left swipe from the top brings the Notification Center and right swipe brings Control Center or TouchID is not pressing the button but laying your finger on it…
They would just leave it on. This is a non-issue.

This is great that we have the option. Sometimes the moving waveform does distract me when I have background music playing.

My favorite part of this entire article is this: “Unfortunately, there's currently no way to outright disable Dynamic Island content.

When the title said this, “iPhone 14 Pro: How to Turn Off Dynamic Island Content
