The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are Apple's newest iPhones, featuring an updated front design, a Dynamic Island notch replacement, satellite connectivity, a new Main 48MP camera, and more.

Beyond the headlining features, there are more minor changes and newsworthy aspects of the new iPhones, and we've rounded up six below.

New White Box

As rumored, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max ship in an all-white box, unlike previous high-end "Pro" iPhones, which shipped in a darker gray box. Despite the new box color, no other aspects of the unboxing experience for the new iPhones are believed to have changed.

Brighter True Tone Flash

Like the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature an updated True Tone flash that, in certain conditions, can be up to two times brighter than previous generations.

"The new Adaptive True Tone flash adjusts the pattern and intensity of nine LEDs depending on the focal length of the photo, so your subject always appears in the best light," Apple says on its website. Using a combination of the new flash, larger lenses, and more advanced image processing, users can get up to 2x better low-light photos on the Main camera and up to 3x better low-light photos on the Ultra Wide camera.

Dynamic Island is Actually Touchable

While at first glance you may think that the Dynamic Island is only visually appealing to show relevant information with cool animations, it's actually a fully interactive part of the display that you can tap. For example, as shown in a brief hands-on video on Twitter, tapping the Dynamic Island when music is playing opens up the Music app. If a timer is running, tapping the Dynamic Island brings up a new UI at the top of the display to show the time remaining and relevant controls.

As noted by Engadget's hands-on review with the iPhone 14 Pro, touching the Dynamic Island when nothing is happening results in a small stretching animation for the pill shape and subtle vibration.

Cinematic Mode Improvements

Introduced with the iPhone 13 series, Cinematic Mode allows iPhone users to record videos of subjects while subtly blurring the background. With the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series, Apple is improving Cinematic Mode to now support 4K HDR at 24FPS and 30FPS. Like on past models, users can edit the focus of a subject after they've recorded the video in the Photos app.

Improved Sensors for Car Crash Detection

With all models of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro and the new Apple Watch models, Apple has built car crash detection into its devices. The new feature can detect if a user has been part of a car crash using a wide range of improved sensors. On the iPhone 14 models, a new high g-force accelerometer can detect accelerations or decelerations up to 256 Gs. Car crash detection also uses the barometer to detect changes in pressure, such as those caused by an airbag, and more sensitive microphones that can detect extreme sound while a user is driving.

No mmWave Expansion

iphone-5g-mmwave-16x9.jpg

mmWave versions of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are still limited to the United States, two years after the first 5G iPhone. mmWave 5G is a faster standard of 5G and requires an additional antenna. mmWave iPhones have only been available in the United States since the first 5G-enabled models in 2020 and have not expanded to other countries, including Canada or European countries.

but apple said the pro line has narrow borders...i dont see it compared to the 13 series or even compared to the iphone 14
They added 24 vertical pixels and 9 horizontal ones, while maintaining about the same overall case width, and stretching the case height by less than 1mm. Pixel density is the same. So, I'd say the difference in borders is there, but basically imperceptible at those tiny amounts.

Still extremely confused as to why the innovative Dynamic Island couldn't be on all 14 lineup....
I'm thinking they simply needed to differentiate the products more for marketing. Also, I imagine the DI effects take advantage of ProMotion to look acceptable (they bounce quite a bit), which the 14 doesn't have. If they gave the 14 ProMotion and DI, there wouldn't be nearly enough differentiation between the two lines, especially now that the 14 has 6GB RAM (tho they don't market that).

Why not just add the additional antenna to all iPhones, not just US. Cheapskates.

Sure, European regulators are still in consultation on mmWave rollout here but it’s coming soon.

It's been Soon™ for years.

The most recent report suggests that just eight out of 27 Member States have assigned at least 50% of the 26 GHz band.

That was as of July.

Why should Apple waste money when the EU can't get their stuff together?

Ridiculous isn’t it.

Lightning for iPhone and AirPods.
USB-C for iPad
MagSafe for MacBooks.
Macbooks have USB-C also. MagSafe is an additional charging method and welcome. I was pissed when they took it away.

USB-C is the reason I will still not upgrade from my X. I guess I'm waiting and hoping for the 15 to have it.

Because in practical terms, mmWave doesn't work, not when it can be blocked by buildings. Mid-band 5G hits 85% of mmWave speeds according to Apple.

mmWave is only suitable in the U.S. where politics forced the country to adopt mmWave. The rest of the world adopted far more practical mid-band 5G.

The iPhone 14s do not use the same screens. There needs to be a significant gap between both ranges. Previously it wasn't obvious, now it is.

Don’t get me wrong, I love MagSafe too since the first gen in the early noughties. Now it’s back, nobody charges their laptop via USB-C if they dont have to.

But this fragmentation across product lines is annoying. The iPhone should have gone USB-C a year or two ago.

Things I wonder about the 14 Pro

• will we be able to use the brighter flash as a brighter flashlight?

• has anyone seen photos of the 14 with the new battery percentage readout NOT inside the battery icon itself, as previously rumored?

• is the lightning port updated in any way for faster data transfer like they recently did with the iPad? Being stuck on USB 2.0 speeds to transfer 4K ProRes footage and ProRaw photos is very much NOT a “Pro” move

Wow that new white box will sure make up for a 48 pixel camera with no 8k video. And that awesome software-morphing pill. I mean I could just watch that for days.

Lotsa luck to Apple, sincerely. In the meantime, I canceled my two pro max orders and will wait for next year and popped in an order for a blackmagic 6k pocket cinema camera.

Dumbest move ever by Apple, and over the decades there have been some pretty dumb moves. At the very least they should have negated the 8k rumors out of the box for like, a YEAR.

That was also the first and last keynote I sat through live instead of just scrolling to the one thing I was planning to buy. That won't ever happen again either. I know what excellent watch ads I'll never buy look like.

According to Macrumors and rest of the internet, mmWave was the *real* 5G /s

Are you sure international models support mid-band? Usually when news articles like this mention mmWave, they mean both mid and high band.
