Agree 100% - especially better optical zoom. Samsung has had that for three years or more; surely Apple could do as well, if not better, than Sammy. None of us are EVER going to legitimately become 8k Hollywood cinematographers using an iPhone (hated those 13 Pro ads with cinematography portrait mode shots) - so why focus so much on that when what is needed is point and shoot convenience with a longer lens when our kids/grandkids are across the soccer field from us?
Fully agree. Samsung’s zoom has gotten very good and is supremely useful in a number of situations. Kids on the ferris wheel stopped at the top? No problem, great zoom shots. Beautiful bird perched outside the kitchen window? No problem, great zoom shots. I really wish Apple would care about zoom more.

Your logic is dated. You’re basically stating that Jobs never would’ve kept innovating, and he was really only around for the infancy of the iPhone, not the latter part of how advanced it’s become in terms of the camera technology. Smart phones are progressive technology, and that means that comes with change.
Exactly. I can’t stand all of the “Steve wouldn’t have…” posts.

No way of telling what he would’ve done. However, what we DO know is that Apple would’ve had to make changes/upgrades regardless of who the leader is in order to stay competitive/progressive.

Well it'll improve image resolution slightly. But cost a lot of low light performance, which is rubbish anyway without a whole bunch of computation.

The main problem with even the iPhone 13 Pro is that there is a big zoom gap between the 1x and 3x lenses which requires digital zoom and some horrible looking interpolation. It might improve that as you mention.

Here's a good illustration. Everything between these two is a crappy compromise which is pretty useless.

But screw it I bought a mirrorless because I want completely linear zoom and a sensor that's a LOT larger than this one.
This is my main gripe with the current camera system. The main camera is too damn wide. It's like a 28mm when really it should really be a 35-40mm. I wish they would reevaluate their focal lengths TBH. Overall, it's still a lovely camera system (I'm still on the 12 Pro Max), but the focal lengths bother me.

How about day to day useful features for normal people?. Like no notch?
being 100% honest when I ask this question here… how exactly is “no notch” a “day to day useful feature for normal people?”
First of all, it’s not a feature. It’s a removal of something that creates the ability for a feature, but the notch itself is not a feature. Just like the Apple logo on the back of the phone isn’t a feature.
But more importantly, “normal people” don’t even know what the notch is. It’s not a frequent complaint of regular customers, there are plenty of examples of people being asked about it and only think about it once it’s pointed out to them. It doesn’t affect their day-to-day usage of the phone in the slightest.
How would removing it change anything?
Sure, it would look nicer… for the first five seconds, until you forget that it was ever there and you continue using your phone the exact same way you used to.
Notch or no notch, it doesn’t actually change the way anyone uses their phone.

Jobs wouldn't have chased the MP race :)
And neither is Tim.
This will be the first upgrade in megapixels in seven years.
In fact, Apple changed the megapixel count four times under Steve, going from two, to three, to five, to eight… but only once under Tim, going to 12 in 2015.
This will only be the second upgrade to the megapixel count in a decade

I wonder if they'll be able to keep sensor scan speed similar to today. Reading 12mp is much easier than reading 48. iPhone is one of the cameras with the lowest rolling shutter distortion.

Yeah it's jarringly annoying. The wide is too wide as well.

No one cares about 8K video. They want 48 MP because the cameras are still not good enough in bright light. We should be able to zoom out digital images a little bit without immediately getting tons of unusable noise.
Yeah no, that's not it, because of binning the 48MP sensor will be the same resolution as the current iPhones, it literally is just so that they can have 8k video, which I agree nobody but the phone companies cares about. For zoom they have the zoom camera.

The only thing i'm interested is - WILL I BE ABLE TO TAKE A NORMAL PICTURE OF THE MOON SO IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE A MOON AND NOT SOME YELLOW SMUDGE? You know, like samsung, Huawei and the rest of the gang had for the last couple of years?

Great, then there will be an even bigger difference in quality between the wide and the ultra wide lens...
There's already a massive difference, and they're both 12mp

21% bigger sensor for the main camera sounds awesome! Especially since Apple is increasing the pixel count. I wish they’d also increase the size of the ultra wide & tele sensors too. But I guess that gives them something to upgrade for the iPhone 15 in 2023.

I wonder how big the sensor in an iPhone can ultimately get? What would be the absolute physical limit size wise that an iPhone sensor could be? The lens would have to get bigger too. But even that has a limit before it’d be ridiculous design wise. I guess eventually, sensor stacking & further software improvements will help fill in the gaps. Should be interesting to see how technology keeps improving. Cause it’s really amazing how far phone cameras have come in the last 5 yrs. They’ve basically killed the point & shoot market. Imagine how much better they’ll be in another 5 yrs. ?

Turns out it won’t be 21% it will be 57% larger

21% is the width

Wow. It's definitely going to bring massive upgrades to the cameras. Can't wait for revamped Macro mode. My fingers are crossed we see finally get to utilize Astrophotography capabilities.
I already do on my 13 Pro!

Ah. Smaller pixel, more noise, even uglier photos. I can‘t believe that the 13pro produces such mushy pictures, even with proraw, and it doesn’t give you the option to skip the denoise algorithm when you are editing them. Taking DNG photos with Lightroom instead produces much better results, so it’s not about the hardware. Apple needs to rethink the whole process if they want to brag about the photographic capa of the iPhone.
Absolutel! It is a fact that iPhone 11 Pro takes better pictures than 13 in some situations. It’s all about the hdr4. At least if apple would let you disconnect it ?…

Apple need to stop upgrading cameras. It’s phone, not a camera. Anything more than one camera is excessive.
upgrading the cameras is the main thing phones promote each year. It's all about the cameras. the difference elsewhere is done via software. there's not much else that can be added year on year.

no not until we get pericope lens. which will be in 2023 most likely.
