Do you have any sort of proof to that? Any study that says AOD destroys battery life? Many phones have had it for quite some time and if it was really a big problem I don’t think it would have stuck around for so long
Marquees Brownlee confirmed it in his review. He states it’s a noticeable decline in battery life with always-on turned on.

off of what merit? And what side by side comparison? Sara (idk how to spell her last name) big YouTuber too also ran AOD for 12 hours with no drop from 100% overnight then left it another 12 hours during the day and it dropped 5% with getting notifications and whatnot so..I don’t think any result these YouTubers have are actual true comparisons testing battery especially with the time given with the phones

I agree. Also noticed on MKBHD’s iPhone 14 Pro review video, at exactly 8:14, that “No cellular activity” is taking a hit on his battery. When cell coverage is low, the phone increases its output power to maintain a stable connection.

You could even see his phone switching from SOS to a low cell coverage from time to time during the video.

This feature should be tested by keeping it on standby with aod on compared to the 13 pro max and then compare the battery drain.

I always take battery test with a grain on salt. The first few days to a week, there is indexing and other tasks running that will impact the battery. I upgrade every year and the first week my new iPhone is usually a little worse than my old in terms of battery life. Some of that is high usage for a new toy, and some is indexing. Once that stops, the battery life is always better than previous.

If testers are using an iCloud restore or adding any apps or data, other than straight out of the box, it's going to be hard to assess the real world hit from AOD.

A full charge and draining to zero is only part of what the phone uses to determine battery percentage. It also uses the the battery voltage. Lithium-ion batteries have a fairly well defined voltage range from dead to fully charged that can be used to estimate percentage.

That said, the phone also keeps track of how may amp-hours go in and out of the battery, also using that for the percentage indicator. But it's not the only information it uses.
Agreed, I never implied that was the only variable, however it is significant among other factors such as temperature sensors, resistance levels, capacitance calculations / etc.

Regardless of those, a full charge cycle is a significant variable that sets the threshold and scale of the associated calculations that go into displaying the battery %. If that value is wrong, the entire scale of other calculations can be impacted.

Just checking out AOD for the first time. It’s really nice just in how it handles wall paper.

I have never really been happy with the watch’s AOD. Hope this stands test of time.

I'm still undecided. Gotta see how much difference it makes on the battery charge per day. I really love the screen though! It's the best on an iPhone I've ever had.

Now that I wouldn't be without. If the watch didn't have it, I wouldn't be wearing an Apple watch.

Just curious, but why don't you like the apple watch's AOD?

I think the sleep mode toggle is either on at the wrong time or off at the wrong time a lot for me.

So I’m either having to roll the crown or now really long press or the watch face is on in our dark room.

I probably need config tuning.

The very first review I watched (MKBHD) says he turned off always on display specifically because he noticed an impact on battery life. So I don't think it is "too early to tell".

This is not the right way to do always on display. It is too bright and includes too much.

I would love a very dim view of clock + widgets + some kind of notification indicator on a BLACK BACKGROUND.

Android has done this right forever. There is no excuse for Apple to be messing this up when it took so long to come to the iPhone in the first place.
Notice how he had no power measurement graph up but did on other specs? Hmmm.

He’s been shifty lately even to the point of contradicting himself in the same video less than 40sec apart ~ not in this video though.

Just switched it off, drove me nuts. My brain keeps thinking that I got a new message because the display light is on but its always on :) Still nice idea.

with AOD on all day managed 8 hours Screen time followed by 7 hours screen time. Not seeing a big difference with AOD on all day to be honest.
