Last year didn’t everyone say the 13 was more of a 12s? I’m getting deja by all over again. People don’t get all butthurt when car makers make minor yearly improvements. When a car model gets a major overhaul it’s big news! That’s because you don’t actually need to upgrade every year. Cars, like phones, last for longer and the 14 is just apple’s current edition for whoever needs a new phone now at this particular time. It’s more up to date than if they just continued selling the 13. Y’all are just mad because you don’t have a shiny new toy this year. News flash—there’s a chip shortage and all kinds of other shortages. Well, get the pro then—you were all going to anyway.
Yes, but car manufacturers don’t have a big two hour event to unveil minor facelifts to existing models. Apple brings this criticism on themselves by making it this huge annual event with tons of hype.

Yes, you could get the 13 cheaper but in reality the 14 will always be a year newer and likely better trade-in value if you were to get 15 next year
If someone was price conscious to pick up a 13 instead, I doubt they'd be looking at replacing it in the next 2-3 years. That's the reality.

yeah when they had to spend 10 minutes on satellite and another 10 minutes on crash protection explaining how they really work, you know right there it's not going to be good. I found these 2 parts very odd. Do 99% people care how Apple uses satellite via relay? Just a weird feature to focus their time on, but I guess they don't have many new features to really talk about in order to fill 2 hour event.

Apple just needed to get away with using the same chip as last year once, so all the next non-pro iPhones will have a newer and faster chip compared to the year before.

Apples target upgrade market is not the iPhone 13. I think the iPhone 14 will be a huge success.
I think you're right. My wife's 11 had a HW earpiece problem so needed to replace it. Could have gone with a 13, probably would have gone with a 14 if it were up to her, but I keep my phones a lonnnnnng time, and she is taking more photos, so went with 14Pro.

I think we're just so used to great phones, we take for granted how great they really are. As people that live off of daily articles and news about the technology behind these products that we often can't see the forest for the trees.

Tim Cook held an all-staff meeting and was like, "we're going to do a purple phone this year but I want whichever of you hates purple the most to pick the actual hue. All of you who love the color purple or even colors in general, put your hands down."

It doesn't even deserve an S title. It's a shambles how they've literally recycled last years model and sold it at a higher price tag (outside of the US).

The reasons for some of those higher prices may have nothing to do with Apple. It may simply be due to currency fluctuations out of Apple’s control.

You list yourself as being in the UK. The UK price for a 128GB iPhone 14 is £707 (before VAT) which is around $818 USD at the current exchange rate. That’s $11 LESS than the $829 price (before state/local taxes) for same phone in the U.S.

$829 was also the U.S. starting price of the iPhone 13 and 12 (which had 64GB). If iPhone prices are notably higher in the UK or other countries this year, it may very well be due to the stronger USD which you can't blame Apple for.

I really think we should lay off the yearly upgrades... its just not possible. The tech has matured. I mean video game consoles release a new version every 5 years. Every 2 years its a nice upgrade cycle for mobile phones. Heck We can pull it up all the way to 3 no issues.

Not really, if people did not pick on the iPhone 13 they won't pick up on the 14 since its too similar. They were hoping for a bigger upgrade.

People with the 13 will get a bigger upgrade with the 15.

Plus 2gb of RAM (not insignificant) and some emergency satellite stuff. I don't disagree with you, but let's include what we can here. :p
Fair, the 2 GB of RAM is something, and it did receive some new hardware features!.

I also forgot to mention that the S cycle iPhones remained relevant (in terms of software support) for 1-2 years longer than their predecessor (only including the 3GS through 6S here, as we don't know the fate of the XS yet) thanks to substantial internal upgrades. Time will tell if the extra RAM and GPU core is enough to give the 14 another year of iOS support past what the 13 gets, of it they both get cut at the same time.

I don’t understand why all these people are saying it’s a 13 S

The S models were noted for major internal updates, which is NOT the case here

I suppose the last S model (Xs) was similarly minor though

Every review always says every iPhone is the just a “#s”. They said the 13 line was just a “12s”. iPhones aren’t meant to upgrade every year. They slowly get better so when you upgrade after 2-3 + years, it DOES seem like a good jump

Yes and no. While the A12 in the XS didn't feel like a very big update over the A11 at the time (in terms of speed) it did include a substantially more powerful "Neural Engine" than the basic one included in the A11 (which is used almost exclusively for FaceID). We are starting to see Apple releasing a number of new features which use on on chip ML and the features are making it to the XS series & XR but not the the 8 series and X.

Apple has given select media outlets and YouTubers access to the new iPhone 14 ahead of when it begins arriving in customers' hands on Friday, September 16.

The new iPhone 14 is an incremental upgrade compared to the iPhone 13, featuring the same overall design, the same A15 Bionic chip with an additional GPU core, and slight improvements to the rear and front cameras.

Display

There are two models of the iPhone 14, the standard 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and the larger 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus. The iPhone 14 Plus will not begin shipping to customers until Friday, October 7, so reviews are focused on the smaller standard model.

The display on the standard iPhone 14 is nearly identical to the one on the iPhone 13, with The Verge's Allison Johnson saying it's a good display but noting that there are other options offering more advanced displays with 120Hz refresh rates at around the same price.
Performance

The iPhone 14 features the same A15 Bionic chip that powered the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Compared to the A15 Bionic chip in last year's standard iPhone 13, the iPhone 14's chip features one additional GPU core. CNET said the iPhone 14 is "speedy" with fluid animations and no performance hiccups.

The iPhone 14 also includes an improved internal design that better manages heat, allowing users to play high-intensive games for longer without the device overheating. Engadget said the device managed to stay "cool to the touch" during gaming and that the phone remains capable regarding performance.
Battery Life

The standard iPhone 14 features a slightly larger battery than the standard iPhone 13. Apple is promising up to 20 hours of video playback and up to 80 hours of audio playback for the iPhone 14, making similar claims as it did for the iPhone 13 last year.

The Verge said that in real-world testing, the iPhone 14 ended the day with around 40% to 50% of battery life remaining, adding that while it's difficult to compare to the iPhone 13 given limited testing and varying usage, it should be sufficient for most users.
Cameras

Both the front and rear cameras on the iPhone 14 received some upgrades. On the front, the selfie camera is an all-new 12MP camera that features autofocus. Apple says the new camera delivers up to 2x better low-light photos thanks to its larger aperture.

On the back, the iPhone 14 features the same dual-camera setup as the iPhone 13 but now includes improved Main and Ultra Wide lenses. The new Main camera has an ƒ/1.5 aperture that allows 49% more light to enter every shot. The Main camera also benefits from a new workflow that Apple calls the Photonic Engine. The Photonic Engine merges multiple pixels from multiple exposure levels to deliver brighter and "more lifelike" colors in low-light situations.

CNET said the iPhone 14 takes acceptable photos in low-light conditions and handles details well. For videos, the iPhone 14 includes a new Action mode that delivers stabilized video when active. The Verge says Action mode is "very much designed to be used in bright outdoor light," noting that in any other conditions, videos look "horribly blotchy."
