If you (the phone) keep moving after the “crash” has been detected you have not been in a crash. Should solve it without having to put every possible roller coaster WW in a database.

Edit: don’t know how long the count down is for automatic calling emergency, but I guess if it’s 30 s it and would cancel count down with further significant movement it should capture false positives like roller coasters.

I had mine on at Everland today and T-Express wasn't too rough, but mannnnnn that double looping coaster messed me up. iPhone didn't fall out of my pocket either time. Ya'll are weird thinking why are people taking a phone on a coaster. We have pockets.

As a software developer, you should always think about edge cases when developing a new feature. And rollercoasters should have been an obvious one. I guess that the last 3 remaining smart devs at Apple were all working on the dynamic island.

This is a pointless feature that I will disable as soon as I get my 14 pro. Most likely when you’re having an accident, other drivers will see you and dial 911. Like it already happens.
I like your gusto grumpy goose

Edit: I thought I was on reddit

There would typically be a place or locker where you can keep your phone in while riding rollercoasters
There’s usually a shelf where it says put your things here at your own risk. Not gonna do that. My phone is much safer in my pocket. Tried really crazy roller coasters and never once did I drop something from my pockets.

What world we are living in - living at the mercy of our phones.
If this is a problem that is worth making a big deal out of.... Jesus!

There is a mental recession going around this planet, not just financial.

Turn the darn car crash detection before jumping into such rides and go about your life.
Humanity has reached the peak of boredom and makes drama about the most irrelevant things.

What's next? Without devices we won't go out of the house soon? 🤕🤕🤕
Nobody is using car-crash detection because of boredom or a mental recession, and nobody is expecting a rollercoaster ride to trigger their phone's car crash detection. Sounds like you're the one who needs to live without their devices for a while, if something like this has triggered you.

I was going to bring this up in a thread when this feature was first announced but I forgot. The motion of rollercoasters especially RMC rollercoasters is pretty close to a car accident if you ask me.

I’m not a fan of these completely automatic 911 calling features without my authorization, I’ve disabled auto-call because I’d be too worried of an accidental call.

Where are you supposed to put it? On the ground outside???
I know right? And there are a lot of theme park rides where the place for loose items is a pouch/compartment under the seat or in front of it. The phone is probably going to be tossed around more there than in your pocket.

The sensible solution is going to have to be some sort of geofencing. The phone is already triangulating a GPS lock before it makes the call. If it sees you’re within the bounds of a known amusement park and 300feet from any road, it can cancel the call.

Simple fix for most rollercoasters would be to have the iPhone pop up a notification that you are at a theme park and would you like to temporarily disable crash detection, then after the GPS detects you are leaving the theme park it auto enables again.
The only ones this wouldn’t work for would be the travelling fun fairs which don’t have a fixed location that can trigger said notification.

Also add to the above you could put a control centre toggle to temporarily disable crash detection which then auto enables again after a set time like the WiFi toggle, with the option to disable the feature completely still in the settings menu as it is now.

😂😂😂😂😂

At least at BGW not every coaster triggers crash detection. Only Lochness seemed to for me. Granted I didn't ride Alpengeist, Tempesto, Griffon, or Invadr when I was there last so maybe one of those would also trigger it.

News Headline: “Developer who disabled Car Crash feature dies at scene in crash”

My first thought on testing the feature would be common use cases in life that are similar to car crashes, and I’m assuredly thought the same and presumably attempts to compensate for it which is why we only hear of a handful of cases vs it going off every day in the thousands upon thousands who ride roller coasters. Just like their are false positives in car crashes there are going to be in roller coasters. Roller coasters should of course be much easier to tackle since most all locations are known and apple says they factor in geo location but I doubt that’s the top factor. So if everything is telling phone they were in crash except they are at what they believe is a theme park if location always overrode the other data then what happens if road right next to roller coaster and you are in a crash on that road. Or theme park (maybe smaller that has path for cars etc) or maybe train like in Disney in park that crashes etc. So all in all phone should weigh location as it does but other factors should count highly too and so always will be false positives. I’m sure as apple gains more real world data in the wild will continue to improve but that it’s not going on endless times means must be working very well.

Or as Einstein put it: "I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots."
