iPhone 15 Expected to Feature Wi-Fi 6E Like Latest Macs and iPad Pro

The advantage of having faster WiFi is not really about internet speeds, but local network speeds.

It can make a big difference when backing up hundreds of gigabytes of files between devices, for example.
Why would you backup hundreds of gigabytes over WiFi and not ethernet?
And how often do you backup hundreds of gigabytes at once? Most of the times you do incremental backups.

I thought WiFi went to a numbering system to avoid random letter combinations. WiFi 6E should be called WiFi 7. Or are we going to get WiFi 7S and WiFi SE?

The iPhone 15 will support Wi-Fi 6E, according to a research note shared this week by Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O'Malley. The analysts did not specify whether the feature will be available on all models or limited to the Pro models.

Apple has added Wi-Fi 6E support to a handful of devices so far, including the latest 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini models, while all iPhone 14 models remain limited to standard Wi-Fi 6.

Wi-Fi 6 operates on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, while Wi-Fi 6E also works over the 6GHz band, allowing for faster wireless speeds, lower latency, and less signal interference. To take advantage of these benefits, the device must be connected to a Wi-Fi 6E router, which are available from brands like TP-Link, Asus, and Netgear.

Wi-Fi 6E was also rumored for iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models and failed to materialize, but now that Apple has started rolling out Wi-Fi 6E support to its latest devices, it is more likely that the iPhone 15 will finally support the standard.

Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max in September as usual. Rumors suggest all four models will feature the Dynamic Island and a USB-C port, while the Pro models are expected to gain Apple's latest A17 Bionic chip, a titanium frame, solid-state volume and power buttons, and more.

Apple has a support document with more details about Wi-Fi 6E.

I bet you iPhone 15 is still going to run some flavor of crippleOS instead of full fat MacOS.

WiFi 6E, near M1 level performance, Thunderbolt support and a crap OS that can’t even split the pro max screen into two halves and can’t even access a directory on a hard drive without some craptaculous app.

And they will likely still call it “pro” use.

Apple are like Sharp from the early 2000s. Killer hardware, Clown software.

wifi 6e does not offer faster speeds or lower latency, wifi 6e is just extra 6Ghz bands, it offers the same speeds as wifi 6. wifi 6e works only at very short distances from the router…. 3-10 feet. over longer distances, it switches to the 5ghz or 2.4 ghz. I am using an asus ET12 router.
My speed is double that of my 5ghz network while on 6e… so…

on the technical side... 5ghz and 6ghz offer the same bandwidth, that's a fact. i don't know your router configuration, does it offer 160mhz channels in 5ghz band? what is congestion of the 5ghz networks near your router?

Awwww how cute. Had wifi 6e two years ago on my Z Fold 3 and still have it in my Fold 4. Apple is late to the game, as always. The only thing Apple is never late to is removing useful features from their phones.

This person gets it. Wait for Wi-Fi 7 next year. It's going to blow Wi-Fi 6E right out of the water.

Think about it. You walk into an electronics store and see Wi-Fi 6E routers sittin' there, then there's Wi-Fi 7 routers right beside them. Which one are you gonna pick, man? Wi-Fi 7. Bingo, man! Bingo!

7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 Dwarves. 7, man. That's the number.

"7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch." You know that old children's tale from the sea.

I looked into it because of your post and I hadn't realized just how significant the difference is. I also already had the feeling 6E was a weird stopgap release, and that also seems to be confirmed.

The last line of this link pretty much says it all: Wifi 6E vs Wifi 7

While Wi-Fi 6E is enticing, it has a few bugs that need to be ironed out. The industry expects those growing pains to be felt with Wi-Fi 6E so that, when Wi-Fi 7 is expected to hit the market in 2024, it will be primed and ready to go.

Maybe I'll hold out for iPhone 16 after all.

One more feature which I don't need for at least next three years. Good for hardcore iphone players though.

Did you have a WiFi 6E router 2 years ago so you could use it, or you're just bragging about it? AFAIK the first 6E routers became available in spring 2022, and only became more popular during the second half of 2022. But hey, Samsung beat Apple to this game in 2021.

Would’ve loved to have 6E on my 14Pro. Wi-Fi standards need to be up to date so the device stays relevant for longer. I still have Wi-Fi 5

Ya for me it's not even the improved speeds - just having the backup 6ghz band would be nice for congested areas.

The improved speeds would mostly be useful for local network backups to NAS or other machine.

There is already a different WiFi 7 standard.
yes I know, but if they had the foresight WiFi 7 should have been called WiFi 8 and WiFi 6E should have been called WiFi 7.

Otherwise WiFi 6E should be WiFi 6.1 or 6.5. Or maybe we should go back to WiFi 6 a/c or WiFi a/b/g/n, which is exactly what the numbering system was introduced to avoid.

It’s still quite important to have a Wi-Fi router faster than the internet speed. I can presume that many homes have the speed faster than 100 Mbps connecting with a Wi-Fi 4 router via 100 Mbps Ethernet.
Not for most people. Most people don't need to use their full gigabit at once, and even if you have 6E it's still a lot slower—especially if you don't have wired backhaul between your routers. And I doubt most people have wired backhaul. Most people are just browsing the web and watching Netflix 4K streams, which they only recommend 15Mbps to view at a minimum.

I do web development and I'm uploading and downloading large files often and I work at my desk where I have ethernet. For me having gigabit was more about having capacity across the network so I can work when everyone else is using stuff in my house, which was a bigger problem during the pandemic. But the main reason I got gigabit was because when they ran fiber to my neighborhood, I was able to sign a lifetime price lock agreement with my provider, which is a smaller local company. And I'm glad I did because everything has skyrocketed in price since then. Honestly I only need 500Mbps for work, and my WiFi usually covers around that anywhere I'm using my MacBook Pro.

So yeah, if you have 200Mbps and want to cover that (which is perfectly adequate for the average person), 500Mbps is good because then at the fringes of your house it should cover 500Mbps. But that's not really much of an issue nowadays. My early WiFi 6 router delivers 177Mbps about 200ft down the hill in the forest behind my house, per a test I ran one time. Don't need WiFi 6E for any of that crap. And the thing about 6E is that it doesn't penetrate anyway, it's 6GHz band which is only really good for the room the router is in. And most people don't need 700-800Mbps on their phone, best case a few feet away when they're sitting on the couch or whatever. It's just needless hype. Trust me, I'm no luddite but this is a marginal upgrade. Like going from the A12X iPad to the A12Z, or more timely, from the old HomePod to the new HomePod.

Tiny phones have tiny batteries that's why it doesn't last that long.

That was a problem from 2007-2014 before the introduction of the Plus models
It‘s neither tiny nor is the battery size the problem. The 5G modem uses a tremendous amount of energy.

The 13mini‘s battery is comparable in size, yet it lasts much longer in the field.

Putting the phone in 4g mode only and activating battery saver as well as turning off wifi when not needed also helps a lot
