I wish the iPhone Action button could make me breakfast. If it just starts an application then I'll probably not bother setting it up.
You first need to create a Shortcut for making you breakfast. Then configure the Action button to invoke that shortcut.

iOS should just intelligently rotate media without a rotation lock, or at least show an option to force rotate media when it detects that you've rotated the device.
What? iOS already does this, but there’s times it gets it wrong like laying sideways in bed. There used to be an option to use the mute switch as rotation lock on iPad, which I was VERY sad to see removed but would be so happy if it came back in the form of the action button, especially on iPhone.

I don't really use the Action Button on my Apple Watch Ultra. Do you?
I'm going to miss the classic Mute Switch which only had one job to do! Some things are great being left alone. Furthermore, less is more.

I use it occasionally for a flashlight. I’d use the Action Button on the iPhone for effectively the silent/mute switch.

Rotation lock is for when you’re lying on the side using your phone. If anything, iOS should detect the orientation of your eyes using Face ID. Now that would be an innovative feature. Hey Apple!

Wow! action button that can launch the flashlight. Wow apple! This is just next level. Don’t focus on bugs and maybe letting users place their icons where they want on the grid. No no. Action button to replace the most useful button ever that is the silence switch that we have used for a decade!!!! **** you apple

I agree ! I think the mute switch was one of those iconic things that have existed since the first iPhone. The Action Button seems nice to have for those who like it, but I personally prefer the classic mute switch, and it’d be sad to see it removed. :(

What do you use it for, genuinely curious? Seeing things at a distance or what?

Oh man lots of things, trying to read stupidly small food labels, or menus with small print on dark backgrounds or reading medication instructions written for someone with binoculars. Zooming in on impossibly small serial numbers, etc.

You can get it now by triple-clicking the side button.

Apple should have been smarter about this one. The mute switch has been there since the beginning and even in ones pocket, can tell that it’s muted. Now, there’s nothing to stop that switch from the multipurpose use of also being able to depress to use it as a fast-action function. When I walk into a meeting, I am terrified of my phone, iPad or Mac going off. Hate that the iPad and Mac don’t have mute switches as well.

Hopefully the Translate option will provide fast access to translate the screen (as the button at the bottom of the screenshot interface does). Lifesaver for those of us that have to use apps in another language on a regular basis.
I assumed that was fast access to a voice translation function that you might use while traveling.

I just don't get it.

What's the point of having an Action Button? After pressing the Action Button you still have to click on the screen and navigate which actions you want to assign. I don't think it will be instant as activating the mute switch and launching the camera app.
I thought that you would configure the button for one of those functions ahead of time. Pressing the button would execute that function. I don't see a need to click on the screen unless that function has multiple steps.

Isn't that the way it works on the Ultra watch? (I don't have an Ultra)

An "action button" for iPhone will be a great feature.

The action button on my Ultra could use more options for the action button and it should be multi-click. I currently have it set to flashlight, 1 click. It is strange there is no 2 clicks or 3 clicks for more actions.

My iPhone 14 Pro Max already has an action button...if the iPhone is unlocked. The right-side button.

In Settings app...
Wallet & Apple Pay -> toggle "Double-Click Side Button"
Accessibility -> Accessibility Shortcut -> choose from the list (3 clicks of the right-side button)
Accessibility -> Side Button -> Siri (press and hold)

The 2 buttons for flashlight and camera on the lock screen should be changed to customizable. Again, very strange these two on the lock screen remain as flashlight and camera.

You can only use one action at a time. Cannot select multiple actions. This is how it looks in Apple Watch Ultra. Basically, you select an action and it shows up on Apple Watch Ultra. You cannot select multiple actions.
