Apple's upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models will introduce a new button press combination to power off and force restart the devices, according to an anonymous source who claims to be privy to details about the smartphones ahead of launch.

On newer iPhone models such as the iPhone 14, users currently power off their device by simultaneously pressing the Side button and either volume buttons, while the same buttons are used in another combination to perform a hard reset.

However, with the mute switch expected to be dropped in favor of a potentially customizable "Action" button, this latter new button will take on the role of the volume buttons when powering off/resetting the iPhone 15 Pro models, according to the leaker who goes by the Twitter alias @analyst941.

"The volume up and power button will no longer be used to power off the device, or 'force-restart' it," claimed the leaker in a tweet. "The sequence remains, but the combination will be changed to action and power button."

In a follow-up tweet, the leaker also claimed that the "Action" button will replace the volume up button for taking photos in the Camera app, with force-sensitivity enabling a light press to auto-focus the camera, a hard press to take a picture, and a hard/long press to record video.

At this point, it's important to take the second claim about Force Touch sensitive functions with a pinch of salt. Several other sources have indicated that Apple has encountered technical issues with capacitive buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro models and will now delay them for a later version of the iPhone. For what it's worth, @analyst941, who has been the source of previously accurate pre-launch information, disputes this claim and believes they are still coming to the iPhone 15 Pro.

A unified volume button was also a design planned for solid-state technology, but Apple is said to be opting to stick with the current design now that solid-state buttons have been delayed.

Ughh I need a MUTE switch not some button that gets inadvertently pushed all the time. I already have enough screenshots I don’t want.
the mute switch can get inadvertently pushed all the time
Android world is living in the future...while some of us still living in the past...lets bring all the buttons back from the Nokia glorious days

YMMV, but have never anciently muted/unmuted my iPhone since day 1.

That said, a programable action button would be nice, similar to that on the Ultra.

I'd go as far as to make all the buttons but the power button programable. That would allow each user to create tehir own combinations for each one.

The button combo to turn off an iPhone is so inelegant.

maybe. but how often do you power off?

There should have been an Action Button long ago for Siri and Apple Pay.

I agree on the action button, but not limiting it to a specific function, but programmable similar to the one on the Ultra.

As for Apple Pay, the device should recognize an NFC request and automatically open ApplePay if the iPhone is held next to it. No need for a button.

Love the idea of the action button. I’m sure there will be other helpful uses beyond the camera.

I don’t need a mute switch. I have an Apple Watch.

No it shouldn’t. You’d have to tap your phone to it, take it away to securely authorize the transaction with your face, and then place it back. Would be less efficient than the current process.

In related news, iPhones will not include a manual, because using an iPhone is so simply, obviously, intuitive.

Another feature few will ever discover or fully understand, or remember which iPhone this sequence applies to, unless they google/YouTube it several times.

Ok great.

Now on older iPhones, we need the sleep / wake button long press action to invoke the ‘turn off iPhone’ screen, as that will be infinitely more useful than invoking Siri.

it already does that
It used to. Back when iPhones had home buttons. With the introduction of Face ID, Apple implemented the double tap of the lock button via an iOS update.

Hold a phone up to a payment terminal now and nothing happens. It only behaves like that when using express pay via public transit now.

Agreed and this is what I was hoping to see. Move Siri out of the power button and into the action button and restore the purpose of the power button. If placement of the action button is the issue, well, then move it Apple!

Absolutely no one wants this change. There is a long list of things people actually want. Focus there.
The thread that preceded this thread came to that conclusion, at first it was posiitive then more opinions about were negative to more issues around it might accidentally be touched incorrectly. Call this round 2.

Something else unconfirmed to get worked up about. Great news because the delay of solid state buttons left quite the void. Argh! Change! Etc.
