I really don't understand the love for the mute switch. It gets dirt stuck in it, it flips accidentally when you put a case on, and for people like me who leave their phone on silent 100% of the time (a growing population now that the Watch is so common) it is a 100% useless feature that I'd give up in a heartbeat for something programmable or otherwise more useful. I do hate how unintuitive power/reset sequences are now, and I hope they simplify. I never have used my side button for Siri... that should be programmable to something else too.

All I know is I should not have to look up online how to shut down my iPhone. And that’s currently the situation because power button long press is for Siri? (I think. I don’t use Siri).

Fix that and I’ll be happy.

No it shouldn’t. You’d have to tap your phone to it, take it away to securely authorize the transaction with your face, and then place it back. Would be less efficient than the current process.
This in one place where touch is superior. I would just hold my thumb on the button and move to the NFC reader, DING DONE. With face you either have to double tap in advance or contort yourself so your face can be scanned once you move your phone to the reader

Indeed, Touch ID + Apple Pay is the best combination. Very seamless and natural

Unless you can pinch an individual grain of salt, a pinch is more than a grain.

Which does mean we should have less faith.

Kind of how sub-par means bad, when it actually should mean good.
I can indeed pinch a single grain of salt, much more so a grain of rock salt.

Where does that leave us? 😩

I'm getting almost as tired with this stupid buttons as I already am with the AR/VR goggles thingy.

Another rumor that keeps going. First it’s happening then it’s not for iPhone 15.
Then it's delayed, then it's on schedule, then they had production issues, then eveything is fine, then they have software delays, then they think maybe it's for iPhone 18, then Apple releases it in the 15 and they are all like "we told you! we were right all along! see?!"

It's going to be a long 6 months.

If the button brought it up, you'd still have to authenticate. Having it automatically come up, in a consistent manner, would allow customization of the button while using it to authorize ApplePay (or just keep the double click on the right button). A user could set the button to bring up ApplePay or some other action.

If the button brought it up the process would be unchanged. OP’s request was for apple pay to activate automatically upon proximity to an nfc terminal. Which would be inefficient unless the nfc tag was at eye level.

"iPhone 16 comes with iOS 18 with improvement in the Force Touch Action Button which for some reason not disclosed by Apple is not coming to iPhone 15 Pro."

As the OP, yes that was the request. Having the button bring it up adds a button press and limits the button's usefulness. Allowing the button to be programmable means you could make it bring up Ap or some other action and have AP come up when it senses an nfc request. Tap, enter your 4 or six digit code or hold to face (and quite frankly, even if my phone is held where at waist level it still recognizes my face if I look at it so it would be even more efficient for most nfc readers I've encountered), tap, double click and pay if you don't use button for AP. If you do, press, look, tap, double click. Your choice with a programmable action button.

so you’re saying the action button to bring up Apple Pay would somehow be more convenient than just double clicking the lock button? I’m not following.

Ughh I need a MUTE switch not some button that gets inadvertently pushed all the time. I already have enough screenshots I don’t want.
Yeah, like I need to make changing the volume more complicated. I also hate facial recognition and kiss the Diane dome button.

No. The person I responded to wanted it to bring up ApplePay using the action button. If there is an action button, allow it to be programmable like the Ultra's. You could still double click to bring it up either way.

Finally a use for the "mute switch".

the action button is replacing the mute switch. that image is a load of rubbish.

the button layout will be the same as it is today except the mute switch will be a button like the power button.

the mute switch is pointless. all they need to do is add a mute option in control centre or (crazy idea) long press the volume down button.

i'd get ride of the mute switch completely but i don't mind it being turned into an "action" button that does something useful.
No, the mute switch is great. I like being able to mute my phone while it's in my pocket if needed quickly. I don't want that feature to be lost...

I use a shortcut with an automation to mute the volume as the side switch is utterly useless.
