iPhone 15 Pro and Grade 5 Titanium: A Detailed Overview

4 nickels is 20 grams. I am not sure this weight reduction will be that noticeable.
Holding 4 nickels now. It's a perceptible weight for sure. This will be the lightest Max iPhone since the XS Max. for me, the threshold where a phone becomes an uncomfortable weight is 8.0 oz. The last iPhone below 8 oz was the 11 pro max and it will be lighter than that.

I thought Titanium is used in medical implants because it’s one of the metals that’s strong enough for the job and because people don’t react to it.

It's mostly for weight reasons, and titanium is typically used in prosthetics, and sometimes in implants... Stainless steel is one of the most hypoallergenic metals; most screws, plates, coils and implants are stainless.

Man, i can't believe that people are so excited for a boring phone, way over price, paying for a device that does not longer innovate, a boring keynote that we all know what Apple is going to announce base on all the leaks.
i bought an iphone 14PM with a tremendous Expectation and in return a got a huge dissapoinment of the camera.
it took for me to buy a 14PM to realized that, shame on me.
go head people, go waste your money and make Warren buffet Richer.
See you at 5 AM on Friday doing a pre-order

What makes it a huge mistake? It was obviously the color that sold the least.
Wrong: "iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max owners were the most likely to go for color with 42% opting for the unique Deep Purple and 24% going for gold. That’s 2/3rds of 14 Pro customers going for the more vibrant finishes."

You watched the keynote already? where did it get leaked?

Titanium easily takes fire, must always be machined under lubricant. iPhone 15 Pro will double as an EDC fire maker for no cost, so kind of Apple!

Yeah like 0.6% of the population.
I think this figure comes from a study of patients with titanium dental implants who developed skin allergy - dermatitis. If you don't have dental implants you should be OK handling your titanium phone!

I wonder how much more durable it is. My iPhone 14 Pro has a broken front screen. I dropped it and although I had a screen protector the screen cracked. I just wish Apple will work on two things: make a more durable phone and a huge leap in a long lasting battery. It really sucks that I still have another year to pay it and a cracked front screen.

Is this based on a silly poll done by 9to5mac? because Apple does not release specific color sales numbers just general iphone sales.... I would find it very hard to believe that Apple would cancel their second best selling color by that huge of a margin.

I know we are in the mature phase of smartphones, but hopefully they have something more for tomorrow. The case material is such a footnote.

I’m guessing Apple couldn’t get gold to look good with the new material. Same thing happened with the iPhone X, there was only black and silver on release, but a few months later we all saw leaks of the gold iPhone X prototype. I can only hope the 16 Pro will come in gold cause it’s my favorite color.

Although titanium has a higher hardness compared to stainless steel, it's also lighter, making it more prone to dents. To be more specific, the devices may be especially affected by corner dents, which can result in the color coating flaking off, revealing bare metal underneath.

Titanium isn't stronger/harder than Steel .

" ... Hardness is among the areas where steel outperforms titanium. The low Brinell number is one of the reasons why titanium is so hard to machine. It is common to see titanium alloys in the industry as trace amounts of other metals offset the low material hardness of titanium.
....
Titanium is ideal for situations where you are concerned about the strength along with the weight. That’s why construction and industries rely on steel while automotive and aerospace designs favor titanium. ..."

" ... While stainless steel’s Brinell hardness varies widely depending on alloy composition and heat treatment, it is generally tougher than titanium. Titanium, on the other hand, deforms quickly when indented or scraped. To circumvent this, titanium generates an oxide layer known as the titanium oxide layer, which forms an extremely hard surface that resists the most penetrating pressures. ..."

Titanium has a better strength to weight ratio. (but that isn't 'hardness' ) Apple is letting the phone get very incrementally 'thicker' but also cutting the weight by going with Titanium.

Also how Apple 'machined' or 'composed' that rounded edge could lead to contributing to part of the problem.
