The camera bump has gotten way out of hand. Cases, even the thicker phone cases cannot compensate for the high camera bump. Heck its even thicker than the main body of the phone. It lazy design. Make the body thicker, with larger battery and some cooling if needed. There would even be room to have a user swappable battery.

They could bring back 3D Touch too

I feel like the CADs were made by someone who was told the differences in the camera lenses to be increased by xmm, and they just increased the height by xmm, but really it was the width that was increased instead.

if the camera bump goes past the leather case again, i’m not interested.

it’s bad enough i’m forced to use a case to even out the back

Can’t imagine they’ve done enough here, but it’d be nice to get the protruding camera back to a height where a standard thickness case didn’t need to incorporate a camera bump of its own, as it was for releases prior to the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

iPhone, iPad, MacBook, always trending
Designs so sleek, they're like a work of art
Renderings so realistic, they'll blow your heart.

What I notice most is weight, height, and width. The thickness of these phones is so low relative to the latter two dimensions that I doubt this change in thickness will make much difference in feel. Plus, according to these figures, the volume is increasing by only ~3% (from 97.9 cm^3 to 101.2 cm^3, not including the bumps), so the size change by itself will not change the weight much.

The real issue for me is whether you can comfortably put the phone in a front pocket, and I can't do that with either the Pro or the Pro Max. I'd thus like to see a foldable Pro, which would be smaller in all dimensions (including thickness, even after being folded) than a standard men's wallet.
Thanks for doing that calculation. I find that “only ~3%” increase in total volume disappointing. I agree with you that thickness is the least important dimension, at least for me as well, since the camera bump and protruding lenses determine the maximum thickness anyway so I’m a bit disappointed that Apple didn’t increase the thickness of the main body a bit more, maybe even a full 1mm or so, in order to give even more internal space for a bigger battery. If the rumours of rounded edges are true I doubt an extra 1mm thickness to the main body would make it more difficult to hold and for people who say “what camera bump?” because they use a case that hides it then all it means is that the material on the back of the case becomes slightly thinner but still more than thick enough to protect the back of the phone from scratches.

What about the mute switch? I really want this to be replaced with a button so I can control muting using Siri Shortcuts / focus

They keep getting bigger people will be less likely to keep it on their person. Butbthank goodness for my Apple Watch.

First though was "no way"! Until I looked at the bottom of my 12 Pro and first noticed the asymmetry

To me, lazy design would be making the whole phone thicker just because the camera is thicker. Thinner phones are easier to hold and use, specially with those huge screens.

I think those who say “let’s make it thicker and flush” are not really aware of how a 14mm thick phone (or 10mm) would feel in hand. “Just 5 mm” makes a lot of difference.

I would like a lightweight, small, plastic, indestructable iphone with touch ID and a removable battery. Basically an iPhone5c with better microphone, camera, and a snap on interchangeable plastic case over the battery. $200 max, hopefully more like $150.

I think the 5c was the most popular iPhone of the day. No reason it wouldn't do well again if modernized. Trying to pretend a utilitarian pocket PC is a precious jewel is #1 triumph of marketing OF ALL TIME.

The 5c was $99 at introduction. You're all being scammed.

Well, I remember they were saying this when iPhone 6-7 was around, and I could understand it, but now what’s the point? Newer iPhones are already too thick and heavy (and they already have large batteries) and they want them to be even thicker and heavier??

Hopefully Apple starts to go for lighter phones. These cameras are already mind-blowing, but the phones get heavier and heavier.
Weight only affects the Pro models simply due to stainless steel. Other iPhones using aluminum are quite light.

Stainless steel plus larger battery means heavier weight.

Years ago during the flip phone era, there were lots of studies and articles floating around that phone thickness is the most noticeable dimension of a phone when in a pocket. Even more so than height and width. Also a thin body with a bump was much less noticeable than a thicker body with no bump. 20 years later I doubt any of that has changed. Thinness is key.

Will capacitive touch buttons work through a case? I find most cases today make pushing the buttons much stiffer. This could be an improvement if it works through a case.

The 5C was $549/$649 at launch; if it cost less that was due to carrier subsidies. You an still get carrier deals; for example, if you get a 14 Plus on Verizon it currently costs $180 ($5 * 36).
