It’s 125mm full frame, which is basically the end of the portraiture focal lengths. Going beyond that photos of people start to get unflattering. Once you get past 200 you’re talking about sports and wildlife, neither of which a phone is useful for. And it’ll come at a massive cost to image quality.

Big zoom multipliers are for spec sheet comparisons, in the real world they’re not that useful and will come at a cost on every photo you take.
Ok that makes me feel better. I have a DSLR I take to Trek convention only for the zoom.
Next year I was hoping the iPhone would be all I need.

When it comes to photography I’m definitely an ignorant user. I can get by and want probably unrealistic things.

Ok, I’m very excited about this, but I’ll admit I’m disappointed by an increase from 3x to 5x.
I thought the 6x rumors seemed unexciting.

Am I missing something? Is 5x going to be huge?
S20 ultra had 5X optical zoom. Since S21 ultra they have 10x. I was hoping for 10x but Apple decided for 5X which is equivalent to 120mm. My Xperia has a 85-125mm zoom but I do miss 50mm in it. 5x is still double than my 12PM.

So what happened to the "periscope lens" everyone was talking about? Is this "tetraprism design" the same thing, or something else? I guess Apple at least doesn't want to say periscope, because others have already had that for a while.

15 pro max 5x telephoto is better than Samsung S23 Ultra

1/3.2 sensor 1.12 pixel size 15.5 mm2 f2.8

1/3.52 sensor 1.12 pixel size 12.1 mm2 f4.9

Not going to lie, when I heard Apple was going to do a 5x periscope, I was imagining they would use the variable 3x-5x periscope thats on the Sony Xperia phones since Apple uses their cameras anyway.

I really like the 3x aka 77mm camera on my 13 Pro Max due to it being the closest to the gold standard of "most flattering" camera length of 85mm

I was hoping they would have a variable periscope from 85mm to 120mm which would physically zoom between those two focal lengths.

So now the 15 Pro Max basically has 0.5x, 1x, and 5x? with everything in between 1x to 5x all being digitally cropped? thats pretty disappointing tbh :/

Samsung 23 Ultra has a dedicated 3x as well as a 10x periscope...

Isn't this just digital zoom presets for 28mm and 35mm? I guess it's fine if you're not shooting ProRaw because it all gets knocked down to 12MP anyway, right?
It'll likely look fine, but it isn't just fine if you're looking at it as a photographer.

The downside for those who actually care about "mm" focal length is in framing. 14mm cropped to a 50mm FOV looks completely different from a 50mm FOV shot on a 50mm lens.

If you want background compression or shallower depth of field (without using the depth map and blur filter) that only comes from optical lenses, not from cropping in.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max should't have different specs besides size and battery life! I don't want a bigger phone for the best features!

I see no article and no one talking about its ability to do spatial recording? 🤯🤯 never would have guess we’d get that already… and how’s that even possible with such short distance between the lenses 🤔

I agree, I thought it would be in the iPhone 16 at the earliest.

LiDAR is likely doing some pretty heavy lifting but the small focal lengths afforded by the smaller (than DSLR) sensors allow for the lenses to get quite a bit closer together.

Digital zoom isn't real zoom. It's just cropping out pixels from a full-resolution image and then blowing up the rest. It's the equivalent of putting your nose in the middle of a printed picture and shouting "I'M ZOOMING!"

I just woke up & i am already bored. I miss steve jobs and waking up with the excitement of seeing a new phone.

There is nothing new about Cook’s Pro besides the action button & titanium frame. I am hopping the 16 plus gets a design over haul and larger screen. Otherwise i am sticking to my 12 Pro Max till it becomes a paper weight.
The Pro Max isn't large enough for you? I don't want a phone bigger than 6.1 inches

I can’t wait for a comparison test. Love those test when people are unaware which brand took the photo.

Why does apple website state “Up to 10x optical zoom range” for iPhone 15 Pro?
If it's anything like my Pixel 7 Pro it would (from what I read) crop a 12MP shot from the main sensor, re-mosaic the shot and apply some HDR+ scaling for details. Anything up to 10x on these sensors look pretty good with good lighting and minimal motion). A tad soft in comparison to the 5x if you zoom in and pixel peep but solid shots nonetheless.
