Call me old school, but I hate the idea of removing physical buttons and replacing them with haptic ones. I think this could easily be as stupid a move as Apple implementing a touch bar on Macbooks and then reversing back to a regular keyboard
They have to pretend they are innovating on the outside of the phone that is not camera, screen, design and whatnot. Inside innovation usually gets unnoticed and not appreciated as usual. Shiny looks and new design catches layman’s eyes easier and attracts more sales. I think they Run out of ideas to wow customers from the outside.

No, it doesn’t. It’s more durable and exclusively premium. It feels very nice when you touch it.
Who cares how it feels? It will be below a thick case the minute you take it out of the box, until you sell it on craiglist in a few years. So much effort, care and costs goes to noting. I have not seen naked iPhone in years. Sad.

This is bound to happen a lot, I agree. Personally with titanium I do not mind scratches at all any more. I have accumulated plenty of titanium items over the years, and they scratch so easily that I regard scratches as a normal part of the titanium look. A titanium phone would likely be the first smartphone I use without a case.

Still have not been able to cultivate this mindset for other materials, though. :)

Titanium is lighter and stronger than steel, so they can definitely reduce the weight of the phone if they go this way. I also prefer a matte finish.

Not necessarily as they could make it thicker and give a bigger battery, so could end up weighing the same as the 14 pro. Wouldn't surprise me if this is what actually happened tbh.

Thank you Apple for using a Titanium frame chassis. The stainless steel is getting old and it’s got to go. Btw, I love my Titanium Apple Watch Ultra. I’m ready for it!
It’s not getting old, but it’s adding incredibly significant weight! To maintain the strength while reducing the weight a titanium alloy will be used. Titanium entirely on its own would more than significantly increase the cost and make your phone an even higher magnet for thieves. (Let them come muhahahaha).

That said I’m curious what cost savings if any of gained from the cpu step between regular models vs the latest for the pro models? If volume of A16 cpus this year is not enough for all iPhone 14 series, then how is the cost increased for increasing production for late 2023 for iPhone 15 series, and added cost for A17 for Pro models?!? I don’t see economies of scale , especially in this financial climate, helping Apple at all. Remember TSMC increases their costs earlier this year.

Also by limiting the periscope camera tech to only the Pro Max I think is a very bad idea, again not taking advantage of the economies of scale.

Call me old school, but I hate the idea of removing physical buttons and replacing them with haptic ones. I think this could easily be as stupid a move as Apple implementing a touch bar on Macbooks and then reversing back to a regular keyboard. Here's my reasoning.

Most of us who live in colder countries use gloves. With haptic feedback, you can no longer easily operate the phone, especially adjusting the volume when listening to music. This applies not only when you are holding the phone but also when it's in your pocket. I cannot tell you how often I still adjust the volume while my iPhone is still in my pocket. With haptics, we can say good buy to all of this.

Secondly, haptics will mean a small "revolution" in custom cases for the iPhones since unless you use some special materials, you can't really get the buttons working. Obviously, this issue is fairly easy to solve (just make cutouts for the buttons) or buy the case directly from Apple since they have found the perfect "solution" for the problem they intentionally created.

I get that one reason Apple might want to ditch physical buttons might be to improve water resistance, but it already has excellent water resistance. Apple does not need to create a phone that can live underwater 24/7 so what other true benefits of solid buttons really have? A much better idea would be to focus on improving cold resistance, which is still rubbish since once the temperatures go below -10 Celcius iPhones tend to shut down.

The greatest irony in this all is that all Apple engineers constantly seem to forget that half of the people on this planet live in areas that get cold during winter; hence, gloves are a big part of the smartphone experience. Now they want to cripple their iPhone user experience to brag about new "technological enhancements" that actually make the user experience worse.

Regular buttons don't need any power source, but haptics do. So technically adding haptics requires more components that could at some point, fail or break down + they also add that small battery drain too. That all being said, I really struggle to understand what "good" Apple can really archive by abandoning classic buttons.

What did you do about Touch ID?

Really struggling... My 2017 iPhone SE is failing. Quickly.

1) Battery is basically dead and swollen in the case. When I take the phone off of the charger, the battery will last about 3 hours before draining to 0. (Oh, this is the second battery.)
2) The phone only recognizes the lightening connector in the slot maybe 50% of the time. This just started in the last 60 days.
3) Because the battery is swollen, the screen now has an obvious curvature to it. Even a slight press or touch on the screen causes ripple light patterns across the screen as it flexes over the swollen battery.
4) And because it is old, the memory is now insufficient for some pages and apps, causing it to slow / freeze / cut out of an app / etc.

I need to get a new phone. I've loved the SE because of the size, and because it has been fairly well able to take abuse with very little evidence of age or abuse aside from the bulge in the screen. It's been a trooper of a phone.

I like the size of the iPhone 13 mini. The price sucks but it is far better than paying $1000. But the talk of the new goodness coming in Q3-Q4 makes me feel like I might want to wait. I **HATE** the idea of getting another phone with a lightening connector. I can continue to use my SE as it is now. I just keep it hooked up to a charger, constantly check that the thing is actually charging, and I am good. I don't make a lot of calls and my use of the phone is not when I am out and about. I use my phone mostly for text, hotspot for my MBP, news, and blogging. Maybe 5% for making calls and .01% for camera.

Not sure if I should:
1) buy the 13 MINI now (right size at a price I will accept with some disgust... but with the sorry lightening connector)
2) or suffer with my old SE until Q3-Q4 2023 and get the new iPhone hotness (way too big, but with more features, NO LIGHTENING connector, for way too much coin).

The iPhone is no longer for me that’s for darn sure. I’m still running my 12 max and I was hopeful the 14 would be an improvement. In terms of hardware, Apple still holds the top slot. Unfortunately, iOS continues with its bugs in 16.2. Time for me to give the competition a try.

You should ask yourself whether your use case would actually warrant all those new features the next iPhone may or may not have.

If you're unlikely to actually use your phone any different than today and you like the size of the Mini, I'd go for it now. We're unlikely to see another small phone soon so you might as well end your situation, which to me sounds like a small fire hazard.

Alternatively the new SE is probably also a decent phone for people who don't actually use their phone a lot.

If the 1st gen SE has been enough Phone for you for years, get the 13 Mini now as I suspect you'll be happier with it than any bigger phone down the line. Perhaps Apple will make another mini sized iPhone in the future, but it definitely isn't going to be this year (or before your swollen battery starts a fire, seriously you should stop using that phone). The upgrades you get with the 13 Mini will feel substantial coming from your SE.

They need to dump stainless steel it wasn't a good choice for a phone, the current pros are too heavy.
