Agreed! A lot of people seem to think that just bc they don’t find it useful no one else will. I like this idea though. You can leave it as a mute/silent button or you can customize to something that’s more useful to you. Seems like a win for everyone, imo.
Then there is yet another shell case variation to stock in stores and find in stock easily for each of the 4 A15 models.
I have accidentally triggered the mute switch several times recently taking it in/out of my pockets. I am all for this.
To be fair, they leaked accurate details about the Island, but not the Dynamic Island.

Frankly, comments like these are as predictable and obnoxious as any “outrage” in this thread, if not more so.
We get it. Apple can do and has done no wrong and no one should ever express any skepticism about a rumored feature.
Depending upon how many times you push the button, it will perform different functions. Push it once for the silent/mute, push 2x for flashlight, push 30x for magnifier.😁

You could map it to mute. You lose nothing. All of use who always-ever have it on mute get to make it do something useful. Win-win.
For me, it'll activate the camera, hell yeah.

The mute switch is useful, but honestly I really don’t use it much. I’ll be sad to see it go, but as long as the entire phone vibrates pretty strongly then I’ll be fine. If I can tell what mode it’s in while in my pocket I’ll be happy.
A physical mute switch is so archaic. Glad they are getting rid of it (never used it in my life) and adding some functionality to it!
I do like the action button on my Ultra, and I want this one to be orange too…
It could do a million different things, but in the end it will only bring up Siri to tell you it didn't understand your request.
If it’s in a typical hard shell case it would be harder to do. The buttons are all recessed then. Example OtterBox - Symmetry Series+

Exactly same for me as we have discussed elsewhere @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗 wish they would not do this but who listens to me at Apple LOL
My only concern is how sensitive are the solid state buttons gonna be? If I'm squeezing my phone a little tight (say, taking a photo over a railing), am I just gonna be inadvertently turning the volume up and down?
When turning my 13PM around to show people something, I always manage to touch some part of the edge of the screen, which triggers unintended actions, and removes what I was trying to show somebody. Even with a case on.

I have my phone on mute at all times, the only time I use it when I take the phone out of the case and put back in, that moves the button … but that’s just me, I don’t need the mute button..
Well the problem there are some of us who only randomly use mute on, when in meetings it might disturb. Otherwise I want mute off so I can hear calls, notifications in my belt holster case (miss vibrations there). And I like case as I mentioned in other threads and the mute switch already hard to set (so never turn on unplanned) given I always protect my phone with a clear apple case, the flat touch button whatever it does is going to be harder for me to use than the slightly elevated switch so not a win for everyone LOL
