I mean you could’ve done this with the standard mute switch we have now unless they’re letting us choose different actions with single press, double press, and triple press.
Not really, only so many things you can do with a switch.
What, switch it on for the camera, switch it off for the weather app? No thank you.

You lose the ability of having a physical switch you can feel which position it’s in by touching it in your pocket, or by quickly looking at it.
While this effects me differently as I use a case to protect my expensive ProMax I need to have it out to change mode (use mute only a few times in week) it will be lower in this mode if all the CAD projections are correct and harder for me to reach to utilize than a switch that sticks up slightly.

That’s stiil more complex. My parents understand the mute switch. They won’t understand a vibration pattern and won’t remember what symbol means what on the display.
A little speaker/bell icon with a diagonal line through it isn’t too complicated is it? With the physical switch they still had to learn red means mute and no color means volume on. This would have a ridiculously easy learning curve. It may take getting used to, but easy to understand.

The vibration pattern, if it feels like a real button or is completely different feeling for mute on/off, should be understandable. I find it difficult to tell if it is on mute just by feel from such a tiny little toggle. If the vibration is not super clear like a button, then you have a point.

Apple, Apple, Timmy...the ghost of Jony Ive roaming the halls....more "giving more by taking away....."

How long might it be until Apple removes the screen so the iPhone can stay in your pocket 100% of the time, and you can instead view your phone on your iPad or MacBook?

it's not like the mute switch gets much use anyway. I imagine most users flip it to mute and never flip it again until they take off their case and it accidentally flips.

I'd love a button that could be a dedicated camera button.
That would be interesting poll of users how many turn off and mute all the time vs like me occasional muting but mostly on because I like to hear notifications, text, and phone calls. Vibration in my phone holster is not reaching me much. So is is most users, half users or somewhere else in numbers. Maybe I will put a poll up somewhere? Would be interesting just because inquiring and bored minds want to know LOL

The funniest thing about this thread…
If the original iPhone had a button there instead of a switch that could be remapped at the time, and the iPhone 15 were changing it from a button to a switch that was only for mute, people would be flipping out and saying these exact same things in the thread… Just the other way around.
What’s the point of turning it into a switch when the button works just fine?
Change for changes sake
Etc

I disagree. Switch can only be two actions. Software button can be any number of actions. (Tap vs press vs hard press and additional number of taps/presses)

As someone who always leaves my phone on mute because I'm considerate—and who doesn't get many calls because it's freaking 2023—I love this idea and welcome the new action button. Hopefully we can also customize double taps and triple taps! I love using back tap on my iPhone but sometimes it can be a little inconsistent.

I kinda wonder if it will sit slightly lower than the current mute switch? If so it would be convenient to set it as a back button or something so I don't have to reach for it. Especially if only the new Pro Max has the periscope lens so I have to move up in size.

Have your parents ever used a TV?
I’m assuming they have, and I’m assuming that TVs remote has a mute button.
Also… the button will literally be in the exact same spot as the mute switch.
I get that a lot of people can be tech illiterate but… My goodness, at least give them some credit.
If your parents are even thinking about getting an iPhone 15 Pro, they’ve more than likely already been through the removal of the home button.
And if they’re still using a home button iPhone… Why on earth would they even be considering the 15 pro?

Oh, I agree with you, I was just pointing out the absolutely insane hyperbole going on in this thread and pretty much every thread about this.
but go over to any of the iOS threads, and there’s pages upon pages of people asking for… App icon redesigns. Literally asking Apple to change things just to change them… then complaining that Apple changes too many things just to change things.

You might not use it often, but I put my iPhone on mute when I'm at a movie theater, in an office meeting, taking a conference call, taking a nap, sleeping, etc. and then I turn mute off after.

Love the fact that it's customisable. Lots of people just have the switch on silent mode 99% of the time so if this space can be used for something else it's great.

These haptic buttons sound terrible to me. If Google gets their $h17 together fixing performance and bugs, and makes a decent smartwatch, I may end up going back after this year's Apple experiment.

I am going to assume they will be as good/bad as the MacBook trackpad or the haptic home button. If you hated those, then you will probably hate these. If those were fine for you, I don’t think you will have an issue with these.

I am like you but given I am retired the number of meetings has dropped a lot so I am off mute even more often

I use it every other day to launch workouts. Very handy.
Well the only workouts I do at 72 is walk daily. So I want to either select outdoor or indoor walk. If I select the app from screen those two show up as first choices. The button is a bit different and confusing and harder to select those only two options of interest I think it puts me into some other aspect of workout app so for now I do not use it. Most things of interest I have selected as sub areas of the “standard” ultra face so I can get to them quickly. I think there is one there I could change even still that came default in this face and i might just put workout app there even simpler for me I am thinking.

I like to see the little orange bit to confirm it's on mute.
Yep since I use a case I do need a visual cue and like that orange bit as when I forget after meeting to turn off because I am distracted and dont remember. And then wonder why I am not hearing calls and text notifications LOL

Good move IMHO. I am going back to Android after 18 months with a 13 Pro Max for three reasons: keyboard/touch (I've tried every keyboard), speech reco (my career centers in this & Apple is years behind the market) and the bloody mute button! A day doesn't go by where it gets muted by mistake and I miss a notification, alarm, call.

Never understood the need for a physical mute switch. Hate it!!!
