My biggest gripe, like others have said, is it’s just a single action. Apple said they want you to hold it down so you don’t accidentally trigger it. That’s fine. But add double click and triple click! Those are less likely to happen, and if they are concerned it might happen in a pocket, then use the earpiece motion sensor, perhaps in conjunction with the rear lidar to determine if it’s in an enclosed space and ignore the double and triple clicks in that instance.

I also want context sensitive actions based on the app you’re in, with an API for devs to set this up. Then in the settings app, people could toggle whether this is active for them. Perhaps only the first hold to activate layer could be used in different apps, and double and triple could be set to any custom user setting used universally across all apps.

You know, there were rumors about a special haptic engine feedback for this button or for volume buttons or something a while back. Perhaps they could make the action button Force Touch so you click “into” the button at different pressure levels? That would be pretty useful. Also imagine if they did the same with the volume buttons, and you could click into them deeper to adjust brightness? I’m not sure what they could do with the lock button that would be interesting and not be confusing or irritating. Perhaps if you click into it deeper to take a screenshot so we’re not as likely to accidentally take screenshots when we squeeze the buttons together? Idk. I’ve always thought it strange that clicking the lock with the lower volume button does nothing, yet with the upper is screenshot.

Why couldn't keep Apple the old mute switch and just add an additionally action button (on the right side)?

Sounds so basic, why does it need extra time?

Last time I opened the Apple Translator App (it’s been a while) I was not impressed because it didn’t auto detect what language you are starting with so you always had to make sure you flip, which was annoying

It would be nice if Google translate were an option instead of Apple's version. Apple's translate app is garbage by comparison.
Apple translate does seem to be a work in progress, it’s been a while catching up! The iOS 17 version is now very useful in Europe and is my go to.

I also benefit loads from having translate hard baked into every text edit window on the ecosystem, which I guess counts as the app to.

También me beneficio mucho de haber traducido duro en cada ventana de edición de texto del ecosistema, lo que supongo que cuenta como la aplicación.

still wonderlusting about an additional BUTTON on a phone… 🤔
It will go mad in my pocket….
No chance that I put anything important on that button, when my pocket activates it 10 times a day.

Using the lidar and motion sensors while it’s in your pocket would be a great way of running your battery down. Not going to happen.

It's a nice feature. I was wondering, however, if Ring/Silent mode toggl can appear in the Control Center, as a substitute. It's still an important toggl to access in one way or another.

As for the multiple click options, I hope it will come in the feature as a software update! Makes much sense.
Yeah, you're right, I was also wondering this. I mean, having it for translating or taking pictures is all handy, but I still want ring/silent functionality to be very quickly accessible...

You don’t have to wait for the iOS update, you’ll be able to launch Translate or anything else you want. Just use Shortcuts. You’ll be able to program the button to do pretty much whatever you want.

I can't say I've seen this question asked, but if you assign the Action Button another function (from its default ring/mute). How then can you ring/mute the iPhone, is there an option in the Control Centre, as I haven't seen anything to show this.

Replacing the switch by a button saves pennies of manufacturing cost, especially regarding moisture sealing. It all adds up, marginal gains for profit.

With the power button, I can single click to turn the screen off, double click to open the Wallet app or triple click to select one of three Accessibility shortcuts. The action button should be able to do the same and it's disappointing that it can only do one thing.
Like mentioned earlier. They also have to save something for iOS 18 and next years iPhone. You can't have it all now otherwise there won't be anything new next year 😅

Surely it doesn’t work with the phone locked anyway? I would think the best way to avoid it being accidentally tapped would be to not have it work unless you were looking at the phone. I too wish there was the ability to add more than one thing to it. It seems a massive wasted opportunity otherwise.

I always hated the volume switch and it broke off / got unusable in every iPhone I owned so far.. but this was a hard miss on giving us more choice with the new button.. I mean.. give it at least 2-3 actions.. tap and hold, double tap and hold, triple tap... something like that. Hope a future iOS patch fixes it..

Yeah this is the truth. Apple’s version supports a minuscule number of languages and is less accurate than Google translate. It’s effectively useless for actual travel.

Now give me an option that mimics the button on corded earbuds - single press for play/pause, double tap to skip forward, triple tap to skip backwards (and long press for the silence function). I just want them to get it to where the hardware buttons on the phone are as capable as the ones on an iPod were.

What I liked about the silence switch is that I could make sure it's on vibrate without taking it out of my pocket. Just slip your hand in pocket and flip that switch, very discrete and professional. Nowadays I only hear my ringtone when I happen to have an earbud in or get a call while driving (where it tends to scare the crap out of it because there seems to be no way to adjust volume, it's always 3 times as loud as my podcast).

I suppose ringtones are obsolete anyway now with smart watches jiggling your wrist and then you have to tell people "I'm getting a phone call" while showing them the display to make them understand you're not being rude by whipping out your phone.

Don't we already have the back-tap and standby button for shortcuts?

I’d be pretty shocked if control centre button isn’t there for the Pro models. Makes sense that other models can’t toggle via software as it’d get out of sync with the physical button.

I want those additional click options.

I feel like the single click issue is greatly diminished though based on the fact that most people more or less put their phones in a case. Any case can recess the button naturally and make accidental presses very unlikely anyway. I’d love the option to configure it and if a user wants they can just leave single click unmapped.

needs more options for clicks same as home button eg:
  1. single click
  2. double click
  3. triple click
  4. long press
no doubt they'll make it possible, but lock it out by hardware revision over the course of 4 years of iterations.
The Action Button should have at least more than one programmable action at the same time.

There’s many of us that want this to happen. We have to be noisy to make it happen, including well known YouTubers. Maybe I should write an email to Marques Brownlee, and maybe the guys at MaxTech (@MaxYuryev, @vadimyuryev) could make a video about it. Hopefully we’ll be able to make Apple listen.

Cant you open the Translate app with the action button right now (using a shortcut)??

On behalf of everyone in your life:

Nobody likes it when you try to point out fault in others, in order to make yourself feel smarter than them.
They were correcting you, that's all. And they were right. It doesn't mean they are smarter or you are, it just is a correction on this specific thing you were wrong about it.

When Apple announces a new OS and lists the features, it is a roadmap for the entire year of it. It never is just for the initial release. People incorrectly assume that every time.
