The iPhone 15 lineup could come with a braided USB-C charging cable that is 50% longer than the Lightning cable that comes with current iPhone models, according to new reports.

The length of the cables seen in recent reporting led some to speculate that they would be too long for an iPhone, but the latest information suggests that Apple plans to offer a substantially longer charging cable with the iPhone for the first time.

Apple device collector "Kosutami," who has revealed most of the details about the color-matched and braided USB-C to USB-C cables allegedly accompanying the iPhone 15 models, now says that the cable is 1.5m in length. The rumor was also shared by "Majin Bu," who added that the new cables should be much more durable. The longer cable will presumably necessitate redesigned packaging.

The Lightning cable packed with current iPhone models is rubberized, white, and just one meter in length. The new braided cables are expected to come in black, white, yellow, blue, and orange, at minimum, mirroring a new selection of color options for the iPhone 15 series.

I have been able to buy braided cables with a lighting connection at my local grocery store for at least 5 years. Not USB-C and not Apple but does the trick for now.

Apple is funny - Some products I love and swear by and others I will say "Ok boomer" even though I am close to boomer age. Then again I'm in eCommerce and I'd offer it too as an upsell.

Hard to believe, as it will also inevitably increase iPhone box sizes. Besides, have you seen the USB-C cable coming with Beats Flex? It’s super short, like 5 cm, if I remember correctly.

Colour-matching them also seems strange, considering all Apple’s environmental manifestos. What happens if a particular colour model does not sell well? All the respective cables to the bin?

I don't think I've removed the included cable for an iPhone since the 6!

Would be nice to be longer, though. The watch cable needs to be much longer as well!

While braided cable are nice, overall I still prefer the thinner, more flexible rubbery cables.

Me too. Braided cables tend be too stiff compared to the extremely flexible silicone cables.

This may be a minority view but this is a very annoying size, at least for me.

For some reason my cables, strewn around my house, are perfect at either 3 feet of 6 feet.

3 feet is also perfect for my center console in my truck.

But maybe I've just designed my living space around prior cable sizes. 🤣

No way is Apple doing this out of the kindness of their hearts.

My conspiracy theory is that testers were experiencing quality issues with the new USB-C port due to excessive lateral forces (tugging the connector sideways) and possibly increased damage events when the phone was dropped with the cable connected. Solution: longer cable, which increases slack and decreases sideways force (one scenario would be using the phone, plugged in, while laying in bed).
