I’ve never had one fail even since the original iPhone 🤷‍♂️

I've had some fail. The included cable with my iPhone 6s started turning yellow and splitting inside the box; I never removed it nor even touched it! Stored in a dry cool basement. The plastic housing around the lightning plug end of my cable in my workshop split down the middle and fell off...I put a piece of shrink-tubing over it and it's fine.

The newer models seem to better, but I still don't use them.

The iPhone 15 lineup could come with a braided USB-C charging cable that is 50% longer than the Lightning cable that comes with current iPhone models, according to new reports.

The length of the cables seen in recent reporting led some to speculate that they would be too long for an iPhone, but the latest information suggests that Apple plans to offer a substantially longer charging cable with the iPhone for the first time.

Apple device collector "Kosutami," who has revealed most of the details about the color-matched and braided USB-C to USB-C cables allegedly accompanying the iPhone 15 models, now says that the cable is 1.5m in length. The rumor was also shared by "Majin Bu," who added that the new cables should be much more durable. The longer cable will presumably necessitate redesigned packaging.

The Lightning cable packed with current iPhone models is rubberized, white, and just one meter in length. The new braided cables are expected to come in black, white, yellow, blue, and orange, at minimum, mirroring a new selection of color options for the iPhone 15 series.

Apple being so innovative.

Can we have a Braided USB to USB-C, please? I only prefer to charge my iPhone with a 5W Apple adapter. Slow Charging! I need this cable with USB-C.

As much as it might appear to be a smart way of extending battery life, I doubt using a 5w charger has any affect on the health of your iPhone battery, especially if you’re upgrading yearly or bi-annually. I’ve mostly wirelessly charged my 14 PM using Magsafe powered by a 20w or higher wattage brick and my battery health remains at 100%. I’m only charging at night, and typically get through the day with 50-60% battery remaining.

I don't think it makes much difference either. I charge my 13 Pro with a 5w, because I don't care about speed and it's handy, not for any optimization reasons, and my battery is at 85%.

I've had plenty of the OEM cables fall apart - mainly the outer jacket splitting open near the plugs on either end (usually the Lightning end). I've used plenty of super glue to hold them together, then started buying cables from names like Gear Beast and Anker.

this right off the heels as I made a comment in the other thread about how MagSafe cables are longer for the MBP!

a welcome change. yall are silly commenting about this justifying a price increase—inflation isn't going anywhere any time soon. my gma can remember when two dollars was actually worth something. sixteen years ago, it was so absurd that Apple charged $600 for the original iPhone (with a two-year contract subsidy) that they downed it to $400 and gave people their money back. times change, things get more expensive, Apple has shareholders to appease.

edit:
No way is Apple doing this out of the kindness of their hearts.

My conspiracy theory is that testers were experiencing quality issues with the new USB-C port due to excessive lateral forces (tugging the connector sideways) and possibly increased damage events when the phone was dropped with the cable connected. Solution: longer cable, which increases slack and decreases sideways force (one scenario would be using the phone, plugged in, while laying in bed).

this would make a lot of sense. USB-C connectors are not known for their reliability, whereas a phone plugged into a Lightning port can practically be dangled upside down (do not try at home 😂).

I have a sincere question for you, @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗️

I am under the impression from your posts on here that you upgrade almost every year, yes?

But I was also under the impression that slow 5W charging is preferred by those who want to preserve the battery for multiple years.

So if you are upgrading your phone every year, what is the benefit of slow charging for you? Just to maximize battery life for that one year or is there something else I’m missing?

Hard to believe, as it will also inevitably increase iPhone box sizes. Besides, have you seen the USB-C cable coming with Beats Flex? It’s super short, like 5 cm, if I remember correctly.

Colour-matching them also seems strange, considering all Apple’s environmental manifestos. What happens if a particular colour model does not sell well? All the respective cables to the bin?
I’ve owned (and returned) several beats headphones and confirm this.

Beats probably have the shortest cables of any consumer tech altogether.

Decent quality. But so short that you’re not going to use them unless you have a surface directly under your wall outlet or you’re charging via a computer.

Definitely another thing about beats that doubles down on the idea that they are Apple’s SE lineup of headphones -Devices to cut costs by scaling orders of parts higher, and equally there to frustrate consumers by being so close to AirPods but just not quite.

I mainly use wired charging in cars, so I'll have to buy USB-C to USB-A cables to work with my Belkin low-profile 2.1a lighter plugs, or find some low-profile USB-C lighter plugs.

Not buying the color. Or at least not as-is in the picture. There is no way apple would have the cable be one color and the connectors on its ends be white.

I'm glad to see a longer cable! I have a charger set up at each location, and often the power outlet is not right by my nightstand, or the spot on the table I want to charge at, etc... Having the longer cable will make things easier.

Keep in mind that fast charging only happens for the first 70% of the charge cycle, then it slows down. It doesn't wear out the battery. Also with optimized battery charging the phone will wait until shortly before your alarm to finish the last 20% at a low speed. Slow charging on purpose is obsolete.
