iUnderstand that people are frustrated that the Pros don't get fun colors.

I'm dead certain Apple's reason for this is they want the Pros to look even more premium and not "toyish"
Whether you agree or not with that reasoning, iReally think that's it.

All those YouTube reviews are well.....there. When I see "This is the best review of the iPhone" it's one of many claiming the stardom. I stay away from those, look at the iPhone directly, and try them out hands-on. These hearsay reviews at times don't do much but repeat what we know already. My way of buying devices has been a happy experience all these years. I like this site, there are many ways to see opinions of devices without the need to swim through the rivers of YouTube reviews.

My wife was having issues with her 12 earlier this year and I asked if she could hold off on a new one until summer. That's the only reason I ordered the 16. I have the 14 Pro Max and it is doing well so I can be a little more discerning. As long as it is working and no truly cool new features pop up that require a new phone, I'll wait.

The iPhone 17 sounds like it's going to be pretty solid with some of the main things missing here, ProMotion and Always on Display, finally coming to the standard phones.

I still use a 13 and 11 as my daily drivers, I think one of these or possibly the (hopefully) soon to be released SE would be a nice upgrade but what I currently have seems to be perfectly fine. The 11 has 90% battery health and the 13 has 95% so that's not much of a reason to change. Seriously seems like these things are really at a plateau now.

That's moving the goalposts

Apple is ripping people off with old screen tech ... the whole concept is to gatekeep features that should be table stakes and drive upsells

That's their whole model
I looked up cheap phones with a 120hz screen, and the first 2 options that came up were from OnePlus and Motorola. But they had LCD displays instead of OLED. There’s trade offs if you bring the price that low.

Yep. Call me crazy but I'd rather have 60Hz OLED than 120hz of another display tech.

And if you've never actually used 120hz on your display, you likely won't even care anyway. The problem is typically going from 120 back to 60, though I've personally been able to acclimate back to that in a week or so anyway.

After owning a heavy 14 Pro for the last two years, I ordered a regular 16 last week. I then read what seems to be a common sentiment about how 60Hz is terrible compared to 120Hz. I also learned that there was a toggle for Promotion in my 14 Pro's settings, so I switched if off to test the lower refresh rate. Now I understand that people's perception to refresh rates are varied, but my experience has left me wondering if the toggle actually changed anything. Every aspect of my phone use is (to me) exactly the same; no stuttering scrolling, and app and UI animations are as smooth as ever.

So when I turned Promotion off, does it drop down to 60Hz and stay there, or does it range between 60 and 120?

The base models are definitely the much more exciting upgrade this year, but I still feel like the Pros are worth the $170 price difference.

And all those cheap phones have trade offs in other areas, whether it’s the quality or performance.
And so what? Android manufacturers are using 90-120Hz as a standard since at least 4-5years, and Apple is selling Pro Motion iPhone pros since 2022. They do have the technology, as well as a well larger scale than Android manufacturers.
If it had wanted to, Apple could have put 90-120Hz displays on iPhone 16 as well for an extra few bucks. Let's be honest and admit that the only reason they didn't do it is to not cannibalize iPhone 16 Pro.
That's the very definition of technology gatekeeping.
